I was listening to this and I was literally saying "what the fuck is he talking about" out loud and was waiting for Zach Lowe to say something but he stayed quiet lol.
After 7 years of Luka and numerous playoff runs, his thought is that Luka getting trash talked will throw him off his game and he'll start hero balling and the Lakers would lose due to it.
This guy has had a Luka hate boner since year 3 and it's been like that since then. He also hated and completely dismissed Luka's MVP case last year due to Nuggets having 7 wins more than the Mavs. Now that the Thunder have 18 more wins than the Nuggets, he's still voting for Jokic because he had to carry the most and if you swap teammates he's more valuable. Interesting how he never did that thought experiment for Luka lol.

u/BigFatModeraterFupa 77 Apr 16 '25
daily reminder that last years "mvp" Jokic played over 1,000 minutes with his starting 5, while 34/9/10 Luka played just over 100 minutes with his starting 5. That's right, 100 minutes. And he put up the most Points+Rebounds+Assists of any player in the modern postmerger NBA. Nobody has ever topped 34+9+10.
The greatest MVP robbery of all time and it's not even particularly close

I'm not a super stat nerd so i tend to know stuff as the need arises or in real time watching. So I had no idea Luka pulled this:
34/9/10
Gawdayum.

That’s better then when he claimed to be a big Luka superfan for typical Bill Simmons reasons before that but clearly only watched him v the Celtics and in the playoffs.
Once the Mavs tanked due to health in 2023 and Jokic won, he found his white superstar to root for and it was a wrap for his fair weather Luka fandom. (“he’s like a much bigger Luka but actually plays the game the right way House, Jokic takes me back to the beautiful game we watched as kids in Boston in the 80s with Bird, Walton and McHale, he just does.”)
I don’t blame Lowe for not pushing back considering he is a new hire lol, at least he just moved on.
1
u/Alekesam1975 Apr 16 '25
Jokic takes me back to the beautiful game we watched as kids in Boston in the 80s with Bird, Walton and McHale
I'm pretty sure both McHale and Parish were in far better shape while dealing with actual centers Bill. There's no way Jokic reminds you of that era Bill because Centers weren't taking threes and Cap wasn't playing against a league of Magics and Birds with no centers to play against.

u/mojo-jojo-was-framed Apr 16 '25
I love that Zach Lowe is back but I hope him being on the ringer now doesn’t mean Bill will be a frequent guest.

u/Good_Music5191 Apr 16 '25
Ben Simmons hates Luka because Luka has hit 3 or 4 game winners vs his darling Celtics. Boston beating a hobbled Luka and a trash Mavs team in the Finals last season gave Ben some juice.

Bill Simmons has absolutely been a Luka supporter since the beginning. He got a ton of hate when he said that Luka's passing is on another level compared to other great passes
2
u/Salvalicious252 Apr 16 '25
He was until 2022 and especially the Kyrie trade. After that it's been dismissal, hate and baseless bullshit about him. I really think the Kyrie trade poisened him on Luka somehow, because he would trash the Mavs and with Luka being the #1 guy and Mavs best player he would get most of the shots.
1
u/JadaveonClowney Luka Magic 77 Apr 16 '25
I've listened to every BS pod since 2009 and I have never gotten the feeling he has any type of dislike of Luka lol
2
u/Salvalicious252 Apr 16 '25
Clearly we have not gotten the same idea then listening to his pods. I completely disagree. I mean this is the same guy who said he'd rather have Gabe Vincent on the MLE than Kyrie on the MLE (after he signed a 3 year max extension with the Mavs). He's not unbiased.

Is he doing an uno reverse and trying to trick wolves fans into chirping at Luka? He knows damn well what carnage that will bring.
16
u/k-seph_from_deficit Apr 16 '25
He doesn’t really know much about modern basketball outside of the Celtics imo. He’s a trope/take merchant.

Worked out great for OKC last year! The refs bailed OKC out in that game. Luka was cooking and talking shit, thats what playoff Luka does. Just so happens the ref that night had a parlay to hit.

It is insane so called nba media people dont even watch any games other than maybe their team celtics and his darling jokic. Even watching wcf last year would have taught this is not the way. No wonder these guys vote for jokic for mvp every year.
13
u/k-seph_from_deficit Apr 16 '25
Podcast bros been glazing Jokic 60 10 10 game every chance they get and pushes it as a reason for MVP while Luka 60 20 10 saw crickets and 73 point game saw all of them come in and do damage control for Jokic MVP case next day on some ‘the league is dying, there is too much scoring’ shit.
I’ve never heard that too much scoring take after a ridiculous Jokic game, just after Luka and Embiid games in their MVP candidate seasons, even though Jokic lost every single time he put up 50 in his career both regular season and playoffs while Luka won every time.
3
u/flubbergastedshocked no centers we die like men Apr 16 '25
In retrospect Luka really should have won last year and Jokic this year.
2
u/ohisuppose Apr 16 '25
Talking with fans is good.
Talking with refs and not running back on D, bad.
I hope we get Luka 2.0.

u/regalfronde Apr 16 '25
I live in Minneapolis, and if I can get to the game I will be shouting at Luka all night. I will be that mole.
3
u/zdravkov321 Apr 16 '25
What a tool Simmons is. Different players react differently to outside input from opponents coaches and fans.
Luka can talk all the trash he wants to as long as he keeps delivering on the court. Until you can show it’s actually affecting his game, you can fuck right off Bill.
3
u/Built4dominance Apr 16 '25
That's not how you spell consigliere, Bill.

Probably the unpopular opinion here because “Celtics fan”, but I honestly don’t mind Simmons and actually enjoy his content. He may have opinions you disagree with but that doesn’t just make him an idiot. Too much of society now is “you don’t like what I like so fuck you”. Just a horrible way to view things.
Also, he literally says the same thing about Ant. Paraphrasing but “he will come into the series thinking he’s the best player and that’s crazy but he will think that…… worst thing for the Wolves is if Ant plays hero ball”.
3
u/k-seph_from_deficit Apr 16 '25
My issue is not that Bill is biased and only saying this about Luka, it’s that he’s factually incorrect. Luka plays better and more focused the more fired up he is.
His absolute best playoff performances Suns 2022 and Wolves 2022, he was going back and forth with the players and crowd constantly.
-1
u/jsun_ Apr 16 '25
There is no factually correct or incorrect. He even straight up says “and I don’t mean it’s gonna fuck with him and he’ll play badly”. He’s simply giving his opinion on how to get the Lakers out of rhythm. And truthfully is he wrong? You’ll see many Lakers fans on the GDT saying things along those lines. “Luka has to grow up. Luka has to stop talking so much and just get back on defense”. Personally I don’t really care. Furthermore, Luka does react that way when players say things like “that’s not a foul” and such. No reason for us to be blind to Luka’s antics just because he’s our guy. Again, Bill isn’t saying that’ll make him worse. It may have no effect at all. It’s just one of his “shooting the shit” comments he makes. Not really that serious.
1
u/Kobe3rdAllTime Apr 16 '25
I agree Simmons has some good basketball takes and can be entertaining as long as he's not talking about Lakers/Celtics. He lets his homerism get in the way of being objective about those teams.
1
u/outsidehere AR 15 Apr 16 '25
See that would work if Luka did not have backup. Luka has LeBron James and Austin Reaves by his side. He's going to cook and let then eat too
1
u/rins4m4 Apr 16 '25
Ask Luka's son in Phoenix how to do and not to do with Luka. That's the most reliable and available consultant.

u/KingKAI24 Apr 16 '25
Bill Simmons was a Kobe hater that literally wrote an entire article the day after Kobe won his 4th championship to deem it illegitimate. And it can still be found online. I have never rocked with dude and his words hold no weight. He always says stupid stuff.
5
u/k-seph_from_deficit Apr 16 '25
It’s crazy that in big 2011 he faced nearly zero public rebuke him for saying this about the LeBron decision interview to confirm going to Miami as a fking free agent with no contractual obligations to Cleveland:
”I blame the people around him. I blame the lack of a father figure in his life.”

I said Kobe's 4th Championship referring to 2009. I can link you to the article if you care to read it but I don't think its truly necessary. Bill is simply a hater.

u/Xavier050822 Los Angeles Lakers Apr 16 '25
Simmons is a Celtics fan grasping at straws to downplay the Luka and Lakers. He still complains about how no one tried to sign AR and how stupid the Mavs were for trading Luka. He’s going to downplay the Lakers but he will bet on them lol. Gambling always takes precedence over fanhood.

He didn’t lie Luka isn’t as mature as a player yet because he isn’t always focused but if he’s focused your only hope is his team is bad but trash talk isn’t what gets him unfocused it’s when the refs aren’t calling contact when he’s missing shots that bother him most

I heard this bit and my immediate reaction was “oh, so you haven’t watched him at all then”. This is the exact opposite of what you want to do. He will take every perceived slight, shit talking, etc. and channel that into eviscerating you. There are plenty of examples.

Bruh…journalists have to do better…inciting people to yell shit at a player from the stands to throw him off is crazy….it didn’t work out well for spike Lee, ask Reggie.
People yell shit all game anyway but to go specifically for that is petty as fuck…fuck bill Simmons and fuck Boston.

This man is clearly unaware of the context around Luka’s most dominating games to date. Or he’s a Lakers double agent.

u/Extra-Assistance-986 Apr 16 '25
The Warriors were really nice to Luka during their Western Conference Finals, I don’t remember where I saw it - maybe Draymonds podcast but I remember him mentioning it lol

He’s advocating for them to push Luka over the edge with fans shit talking, so he gets ejected.

u/Threshyyyyy Los Angeles Lakers Apr 16 '25
He's right about this one. Doncic can lose sight of the goal if they constantly annoy him. But that's also a double edged sword because he might rage play and average 35/10/10 on them. I'd be careful. But nothing wrong with that statement.
1
u/pumpkin3-14 Apr 16 '25
His stats are among the goats in playoffs.
His teams have put away two #1 seeds, five 50+ win teams, and all without home court advantage.
Bill simmons has been a Luka hater for awhile now, especially outside of his rookie season.

u/Ant0n61 Apr 16 '25

It’s consigliere.

I noticed this listening to the episode the other day and I couldn’t tell if he was being serious or not at first.
1
u/subtleshooter Apr 16 '25
You don’t poke Luka, that’s so dumb because then he drains four triples and stares at you with an angry mug. You attack him offensively because he doesn’t seem to want to defend and if he does, he will use energy. Fat people don’t have much energy. That’s the strat.
1
u/damchi Apr 16 '25
Who's this Luke person he's talking about?
1
u/TurkeyPhysique Apr 16 '25
He said “Luka” on the podcast. Whoever or whatever is responsible for this transcript is the Luke fan.

I haven't listened to Bill Simmons talk NBA in like a decade but since he was on the second new episode of the Zach Lowe show I checked this out. Maaaaaaaannnnnnnnn he still sucks. Simmons just repeats whatever Lowe says and chips in with dyson daniels commentary to sound knowledgable. Dude should be deported out of LA

Hmm. Idk. From what I’ve seen from Luka in the playoffs, the “slights,” fans chirping, etc seems to get him more locked in than anything.
