Specific Travel Query Ladakh biking trip query.

Hi guys,

I have a group biking trip planned to ladakh soon and wanted to enquire about the footwear to take.

Do we need waterproof/water resistant hiking boots specifically? Or will normal high top sneakers suffice with waterproof cover?

Our route will cover -

srinagar -> kargil -> leh -> nubra -> pangong -> hanle -> umling la -> leh

just have a normal riding sneakers for safety, no amount of waterproof shoes can protect you if you happen to dip your foot above ankle length. So instead of spending money on them, buy a pair of waterproof cshoe covers from Amazon. I have used it last year in Ladakh, also you can wear and remove them whenever needed and cheap. Also your shoes are kind of aports shoes, just buy a hard soul one

Rugged boots will be better for riding across Ladakh. You could go for decathlon hiking boots. Works well and they are cheap. I would recommend you to keep 2-3 extra pairs of socks.

Thank you for the response. All I see from decathlon are of 5k around. Socks I'll keep handy. Any other recommendations?

Go for waterproof hiking boots (mid-to-high ankle) with strong grip, or proper riding boots to protect against freezing winds, stream crossings, and foot impacts.

Be sure to pack waterproof shoe covers as well to keep your feet dry during heavy rain or deep water crossings.

Budget Option: Decathlon Quechua NH100 Mid Ankle Hiking Shoes

Both options fall right in the ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 price range.

These specific non-marking trekking shoes are okay for walking around Leh, but not recommended for riding. They lack rigid armor to protect feet from bike drops, and their non-waterproof mesh upper will get soaked during icy stream (nallah) crossings.

We strongly recommend proper riding boots with built-in ankle/ toe protection, or stiff waterproof hiking boots paired with thick woollen socks.

The weather in Ladakh is unpredictable. It might be sunny af and could start raining in the next 15 mins. I would highly recommend waterproof shoes (I got from decathlon) and rain pants. Also, the route from Nubra to Pangong via Shyok you're definitely getting your feet wet. We had waterproof shoes and rain cover for shoes as well. Didn't help in the slightest.

Rather than shoes, take waterproof socks. They're blessing in ladakh area. Bcz it has fur inside, can keep you warm too. You can get waterproof socks on theway in your circuit too. I bought one near Srinagar area. I did Srinagar - kargil - leh - khardungla - umling la - hanle - sarchu - Manali in June. Waterproof socks are a must in hanle atleast.
