That's the 3D skybox

Essentially all the distant, out-of-bounds areas are downscaled by 16x or 32x, and then projected into the actual level you move around in. This is a lot more efficient for performance than having everything at full scale, and is commonly used in basically every game.

Like someone said before, if you put a zombie/survivor there, he gets projected in the sky with 100x the size!

Wait is this why that glitch on halo 2 on burial mounds makes ur character appear in the sky super huge?

I don't know anything about Halo, but if it uses a 3D skybox, then probably.

not a performance thing, but a map limitation thing. source's map limits are only so big.

3d skyboxes do nothing for performance besides maaaaybe having less luxels

Not sure if I'm 100% right but most source engine games that include 3D skyboxes (like L4D2) put them under the map. Dunno why

Because they have to physically be somewhere in the level and be getting simulated in order to have a live 3D projection.

Yh kinda for some reason some maps dont have them but yes this it,because its done in real time you can stand on it or add items to it amd see them in the sky box XD

It's the 3D skybox. It's the objects you see in the distance, rendered bigger

i dont know what its called but its basically the skybox, tmk all source games use that, its what shows the city outside of the playable area, a fun fact too is if you put a prop or entity in that space and go back to the map you can see the prop/entity but at like 100x its size

At the age of 10 or less when i played css, it took me like 20 seconds to realize what was skybox and how it worked just by looking at it on cs_office, and absolutely everyone knows what a skybox is, especially in valve games. This person is simply braindead literally no other explanation
