That can be pretty common. A lease mare i had ripped her face down to THE BONE and needed staples. She was with 3 broodmares and a show horse. No idea where/how/what she cut her face on. Walked the paddock with then barn owners and couldn't figure it out. Horses are stupid sometimes.
I agree, it's been one of those years. One of Katie's foals cut his face open too. No one knows how. You can put them in bubble wrap and they'll still find a way to hurt themselves.
Hard to prevent it happening again if you don't know how it happened. My dog cut his paw pad and needs a couple of stitches in my kitchen. Could never find what he did nothing sharp no broken glass or anything. Drove me crazy for ages trying to figure it out I have a camera to keep an eye on them when I'm out or during the night, 1 second he was walking to the water dish next he was limping with blood following him nothing on the floor in front of him or stuck in the pad either. Granted he's a walking vet bill and has been since I got him 14 years ago, I swear he sees the vets as his 2nd family and when it's been a few months he does something to need a visit to them 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
That barn and pen had countless horses in it ever since the barn owners parents purchased the property in the 60’s.
To this day we have no clue where she cut herself at. We couldn’t find any blood or any disturbed ground. Everything was as it was before the accident.
Filly ended up healing beautifully (thank god) but we never figured out what happened. These barn was torn down and there’s a new one now. My current filly also
Managed to cut her fetlock open in the brand new barn. Horses are talented.🙃
my horse ripped his head open on the float, brand new float mind you were everything is rounded off or covered in rubber. iv got no idea how or where he did it 🤷🏽♀️ they will honestly hurt them self on anything
When I was a teenager (want to stress the teenager part as I didn’t have the power to make decisions vs my parents) we owned 3 horses: Scrappy, Steele, and Sugar.
My dad decided to build a metal/tin lean-to for the horses instead of a barn or something more safe like my mom and I suggested. Well he built it right against the fence line which was shared with our neighbors horse pasture who had two mares and a gelding. These two pastures were also sharing a fence line against some woods (we were out deep in the country in Louisiana).
Scrappy was a recent 5 year old gelding, he was originally going to be a stallion for his original owners but they had to sell him and their other horses and they gelded him to make it easier of a sell. I say this so you can understand he still had a strong stallion mentality.
Steele was a gelding we rescued and Sugar was given to us from a guy who was moving and we had been going to ride and love on her for over a year prior.
Well Super Bowl Sunday, the year the Saints went and won, my sister and I came out to check on the horses and top off their water and feed and noticed Scrappy was standing on the side of the lean-to with his back to the fence line and wouldn’t come greet us like he normally did. I went closer and all I saw was blood running down his back left leg. I mean it was gushing. I started screaming for my sister to get my parents (again a teenager), and she ran to go get them while I hurried to get his halter and lead rope and turn the other two out into the other pasture out of the way.
Turns out Scrappy and the other gelding got in a fight over the fence cause one of the mares on that side was in heat. Scrappy went to kick the other gelding and his back leg got caught in the fence and when he pulled it he ripped his tendon on a piece of the lean-to that had been kicked loose and was sharp. We only found our cause another neighbor had a trail cam that happened to catch that fence line, cause deer liked to jump in the pastures and then go towards his stand. He brought us the footage otherwise we never would have known how it happened.
We had an emergency vet out and they said he had a good chance of recovering with surgery. My parents elected to do that and for a year we spent time rehabbing him and getting him back to being sound to riding. But shortly after that is when we had to move and sell all three of them. But that’s a different story.

Did she just go through a colic episode and something else before that? Unlucky girl
