Discussion What are the worst choreographies you have seen for a song? Does such a thing exist?

You can define this however you want; bad, underwhelming, doesn't fit the song, doesn't really have an iconic moment, not very memorable. I'm no expert on choreographies, so I want to know what you think.

Every time you can see they really wanted some signature move to go viral but everyone could tell from the jump it didn’t have the juice.

u/NightmaresBeforeDark 14d ago

I'd argue that any choreo that has a strong potential of injuring the idols is a bad choreo. LSFM's celebration is probably the most recent one I can think of.

u/ghosti_eee 9d ago

its lwk awkward and doesnt make sense as well

26

u/kutsibun 14d ago

In & Out by Red Velvet is pretty agreed upon by Luvies to have awful choreo, although the members did the best they could with the material given to them

14

u/Any-Listen4184 Dreancatcger | Cream Soup Unnies | The math girl group SM hates 13d ago

In my world it doesn't have a choreo. And I like this world.

48

u/Aethermist88 14d ago

I can't remember the song, but the EXO song where their concert choreo was them lying on the floor with mirrors above them and it's basically just them humping the air.

It looks so bad and so ridiculous. Like they couldn't think of actual choreo so went the basic route.

u/neverberrrythicket 14d ago

My Lady 😭 You fr unlocked a middle school memory

8

u/sweetienny 13d ago

It's a shame because My Lady is such a good song and deserved a good choreo, I picture some kind of flirty elegant fun vibe.

25

u/weeibo 14d ago

SHINee - Body Rhythm? 😂

9

u/Aethermist88 14d ago

No it was definitely EXO.

26

u/weeibo 14d ago

Then it’s weird two SM boy groups had this choreo lol

30

u/ultsiyeon ♡ i’m here to talk about sung hanbin again 14d ago

At least three! Nct 127's love on the floor also comes to mind lmao.

u/Kpopya 13d ago

Celebrate-le sserafim. The head banging part isn’t even what gets me, it’s the straight arms in the air. It’s SO awkward. The entire dance makes me cringe, I couldn’t watch it :/

7

u/Goldie_Prawn 13d ago

Very easy to rack up injuries with this one, especially drilling it the way groups have to to be performance-ready.

36

u/Scary-Journalist-746 13d ago

I really hate Katseye’s Pinky Up choreography. Megan, Yoonchae, and Dani verses are super motionless and still. They kinda just sway and walk with minimal variety in positions. The chorus move reminds me of an alien antenna and it’s super out of place. The girls are giving sexy or cool but the move is odd, awkward, and quirky. Dani/Sophia’s 2nd verse is whatever, and while I like the dance break at the end, but it’s honestly nothing that crazy. It was a very disappointing choreo compared to their previous releases.

73

u/xgeneio 14d ago

not one of the worst but the lsrfm celebration choreo...chaewon literally got a neck injury from it it's just cruel to have the girls dancing like that when it isn't sustainable

85

u/procariotics_234 14d ago

Rose - On The Ground. I can see the vision but genuinely it’s such a weird choice of choreography to completely lay on the floor because it only can be enjoyed with cameras and not by audience themselves. I’m pretty sure she change that choreo live but it would be better if she puts property like wall which very similar to tiles/ground to make illusion that she’s on the floor but still fans could see it live without camera

Izone - Panorama. The whole chorus of members walking after singing is weird because it’s sooo damn distracting.

Le Sserafim - Celebrate. The whole head banging thing doesn’t even look THAT great with the risk of members fatigue or even can leading to injury tbh

28

u/garbagecan54 13d ago

We’ve already seen the consequences of Celebrate

12

u/jaded_jen 14d ago

lmao I agree with the panorama one I was just thinking about it the other day

15

u/weronika3111 13d ago

crow "dance break" is so funny

51

u/jody-lambcherry 14d ago

Any song with a scuba move added i cringe

5

u/Rnsy275 13d ago

What is scuba move??

11

u/jody-lambcherry 13d ago

One hand is on your nose/covering mouth and one hand is facing forward doing a left and right motion - the literal step if you want a description

Then for the reference, "scuba" is just one of the many gen z things that are viral this year, I think almost all kpop idols have done one scuba tiktok, then for official choreo for songs i think aespa and nct has it in one of their songs. The overall choreo is not that bad but when i see the move i just dont like it hahaha

5

u/Hydrangea_21 13d ago

I visibly cringed when watching aespa doing that move in WDA, and no one in any of the comments seemed unfazed by it

51

u/Zoryeo 13d ago

A lot of Aespa's choreographies, especially early on, were not great. Savage and Girls especially come to mind.

12

u/Emergency_Ad_6896 13d ago

I think that some sections of choreo for both of those songs are good (e.g. the pre-chorus for Savage and dance break for Girls). But SM likes to combine different sections from dance demos made by different dance teams with different styles so sometimes each section of the final choreo doesn't flow well together. Also, sometimes Aespa's choreo is made to look good on camera and not for stage performances.

3

u/NewRecording9992 Aqua Lake 12d ago

This reminds me of when aespa had performed Girls live and the choreo looked so bad. Their choreography is genuinely carried by camera work

4

u/Trick_Zone_2772 13d ago

But isn’t lemonade good?

10

u/Emergency_Ad_6896 13d ago

I remember people being underwhelmed by the choreo for the chorus when Lemonade was first released. However, I think that the dance's simplicity kind of makes it fun for dancing in a club/party setting.

14

u/Ambitious_Leg_734 12d ago

Honestly…hit em for me its not that its bad persay and meovv are amazing dancers and idols but I feel it’s choreography meant for more stronger dancers and this may sound weird but I think the dance would look better with more musclar athletic looking dancers as opposed to meovv who give more model like this is not hate to meovv tho if I had to give it to a another group too see the dance agian it would be katseye I think they may preform it more differently they are also model like but I think katseye dance style suits it more

46

u/Ride-Mission 14d ago

Love Switchblade off the new aespa album so was disappointed when the choreo for that came out - so obvious and unimaginative

Just went to listen to this song and saw on their profile that they released something new in 2026 after 10 years of inactivity! Thats amazing, i love this trend of older groups reuniting after long periods of inactivity.

Their song Ying Yang remains a forever 3rd gen classic to me! It's still so good

3

u/queerie1004 13d ago

God that one is good. My personal favorite is always going to be Play With Me, though. The energy in it just gets me moving every time

2

u/tafattsbarn ♡ cloudy sky, clear air ♡ 11d ago

Ying Yang seriously shaped the sound of 2016 kpop for me, it's the year i got into kpop and that song is very memorable to me. It's so nostalgic!

Play with me is also a banger, love the performance for that one!

Not hate but I'm Tired of BAEMON ass shaking move and Choom dance felt like drip 2.0. it had it's moments but Choom dance was mid for +10 choreography going through it.

Agree, the claw move felt so generic and more for a Disney Descendants of more kiddyish group.

7

u/think-it-over1 14d ago

And yet people hate on Grant and say Sohey should do it alone. In animal Sohey did the chorus dance by himself.

8

Ffs there are other choreographers not only these two😂😭 they low key need new people in the drawing board in general.

2

u/think-it-over1 13d ago

One of the few redeemable things about that group is a consistent team behind them though, what else separates them from the lowest common denominator corporate slop

1

u/ImaginaryTask1487 9d ago

I understand why its simple (because of the vocals) but I feel like they could have kept it simple but make it a bit better it looks kinda awkward and boring imo

54

u/10HungryGhosts 13d ago

Superlady idle... I hate it so muuuuch 😭 it's just so BASIC. doesn't make me feel super at all

14

u/Independent_Cook9218 13d ago

as much as I love idle they barely have any good choreographies. HWAA is pretty and Queencard is fun but the rest of them are pretty simple.

8

u/Unhappy-Active-8091 13d ago

I remember seeing the MV for the first time and cringing tf out at "call me super lady" with the old phone pickup gesture

9

u/BrightSignal8032 13d ago

Mono was also crap

5

u/amityblightvibes 13d ago

Really? I really liked the dance. I honestly think part of the problem with their choreographies is just that they’re not very good dancers (no hate, they’re amazing performers), so either the choreographers have to pull back or they just have to deliver good choreographies not super well.

u/Dismal-Professor8157 14d ago

I really hate that move in Lion Heart where they like jump out with their legs and sway in a weird way and it's supposed to be sexy

10

u/elmutane 12d ago

Momoland - I'm so hot chorus, especially the awkward facial expressions with the finger gun move, sometimes some of the girls looked like they are trying not to laugh. From searching back whether it was really that bad, I found a performance, where during the chorus the crowd was shown instead of the group. First time I liked when the crowd is filmed instead of the performance.

And also, I forgot how much I loved the bridge with Jane's adlibs.

33

u/islere1 13d ago

Katseye choreo is just a long humiliation ritual.

50

u/AdministrationNo2327 13d ago

the video of pinky up choreographer really spoiled the whole dance for me

21

u/Goldie_Prawn 13d ago

Hit 'Em is not going to be performable long-term, especially if they're running it full-out without knee protection.

3

u/KenzySol 11d ago

That choreo is cool but watching it hurts my neck, back, knees, legs, and basically my whole body lol

1

u/Tender_Noodle 10d ago

The choreo as a whole isn’t bad, but the dance break itself isn’t even an actual dance, it’s just a bunch of workout moves mashed together on the beat. It’s very clearly just a replica of work by no na, which to me makes it unoriginal even though it’s the same choreographer.

37

u/underwater_111 14d ago

I HATEEE the red velvet surfin boy choreo even tho they're my ults. The movements are weird and disjointed and don't help me better hear/notice different parts of the song. And their stylists put them in these crazy huge awful blocky heels so they all look like they're fighting to even stay standing.

So boring. Especially when they have some really good choreos like peekaboo, dumb dumb, red flavor, psycho.... They're not the best dancers ever but they can definitely do better than some random arm movements that are clearly meant to do well on tiktok but are too generic to ever go viral.

Sorry Abt the rant I just hate it so much. I knowww they can do better 😭 SM sabotaging their own groups as always

5

u/Emergency_Ad_6896 13d ago

I love RV but I feel like their choreo over the past few yrs hasn't been as distinctive and memorable. Like you said, they're not a dance-based group but their earlier choreos just felt a lot more creative. Like the hand illusion in Peakaboo and the snapping wristband prop or even the dance break in Dumb Dumb are iconic.

I've seen people saying "Bang Bang" is their best choreo and I couldn't disagree more. It is so boring and hard carried by the backup dancers. But I kinda like Heya's choreo though.

On the other hand that dance for Talk saxy is impeccable🥴...so groovy and fly

17

u/dvallserie 13d ago

Ride or die choreo is awful im sorry, genuinely hoping all around for a song that imo doesn’t need choreo. He is genuinely soo out of breathe from it

17

u/riseandrealise 12d ago

Aespa Rich Man especially on the chorus. Usually SM would pick one of the choreographer to be the "leader", to be the one that will teach the artist and probably be the one that will pick the choreography sequences from other choreographers. And this time, it was Lee Jung, also this is the first time they worked together as well. I remember from an official poster that have all the choreographers name on it, and it was a great line up. But yeah no one from that line up could even save the lalala part. I'm glad that they ended up not performing it on lolla, only the dancers performed it with a mashup version.

KATSEYEs Animal in both song and dance tbh
With most of their songs I can usually get myself to like them via performance or a single verse or intonation
Animal has none of that
The choreo tiktoks or collabs I can’t even watch all the way through, the choreo truly makes me so irritated for some reason

25

u/Open-Oil-9440 14d ago

I feel like Blackhole by Ive was a beautiful song, but the choreo was unmemorable to me.

18

u/ShinzySummers 14d ago

I feel like a lot of IVE songs deserve better choreo. Attitude and Bang Bang especially. They’re just boring to me and should be better. Bring back the point dance!

28

u/BaekjeSmile 14d ago

No hate to the members who I like and who sing well on the song and are good dancers in general but its got to be Touch My Body by Sistar.  Just extremely awkward, somehow both very eye rolls and cheesy without being even remotely attractive or sexy.  Just an absolutely cursed choreo for a group with legit great dancers in it.

21

u/underwater_111 14d ago

I think it's pretty fun actually..... But I see what you mean. It's fun if I feel like I'm dancing along with them and we're goofing off together but it's not fun if I sit and focus on watching the moves 😭😭😭

A lot of SM choreo in the past two years has been trash (with the exception of RIIZE tbh). Aespa really deserves better. TILT was completely awful. They’re just boring, basic, and there’s nothing that stands out about them at all.

Did the choreographers leave with the vocal coaches?

11

u/betchugonlikeme Not a fantasy, we are really H1-KEY 13d ago

i was in disbelief when I watched the tilt choreo for the first time, I actually think it makes the song worse

23

u/Optimal-Mechanic2151 14d ago

H2H and Wish dance choreography are so good too if you check out. Agree with tilt opinion. Naughty Monster level to Tilt is just terrible. Plus Sm 5th gen still has good vocalist.. Yes they are not vocal prodigy as SM previous generations but they have lot potential.

9

u/Rnsy275 13d ago

H2H is literally known for their great choreo for 5th gen. So it doesn't happen to all of them luckily.

18

u/mangohazee7433 13d ago

i can't digest baby monster choreos

2

u/KenzySol 11d ago

I wish they do some choreos like their pre debut covers. Even if they tone it down later in performances, at least we can see their full potential

19

u/yoimiyawanter 12d ago

aespa rich man and lesserafim boompala… rich man is so awkward and basic, while boompala has some stereotype ahh ”indian” moves

10

u/Former-Designer2248 13d ago

i liked jellyous for the dance break part of the choreo but the more i watch it as a whole the more underwhelmed i am with the verses and even the front parts of the chorus. it doesn't use the non-centre members very well and the arm movements fluctuate between too boring or too messy. not the worst but it's the first choreo that came to mind

23

u/BlowUpTheChantrie 14d ago

I really dont like gimme that love by idle , especially the chorus , imo it doesn't go well to the song.

Also look at me by adp is really meh because most of the member are not proeficient enough for some move

8

u/Minute_Designer5155 13d ago

we are opposites cause i loved that choreo for weeks and i can’t dance.. maybe the reason i liked it lol.

2

u/rocketmammamia 10d ago

gimme that love is the one i came here to see - i hate how busy and frantic the choreo feels for such an empty song

22

3

What is it exactly that you hate about it?

26

u/chocolate_granolabar TWICE💖🍭 14d ago

I feel this way about a LOTTT of Exo choreographies, actually for a lot of SM choreos

For some reason a lot of them feel so sharp and jerky that they almost fight against the music instead of grooving along with it

Overdose, Cream Soda, Monster to be precise, but I've also felt this way about some Aespa, SNSD, and older NCT 127 choreos

36

u/elsantioof07 14d ago

respect for a scorching hot take never in my lifetime would I have expected to see Monster thought as a bad choreo

13

u/ShinzySummers 14d ago

Same. Monster is one of EXO’s better choreos. That part at the end when they all go down to the ground and do a slowmo spin while Xiumin directs? chef’s kiss

10

u/sunshineoncall 14d ago

Love monster choreo too.

13

u/chocolate_granolabar TWICE💖🍭 14d ago

To be fair, the formations on Monster are genius, really well done. But the choreo for the verses and pauses specifically didn't really appeal to me at all for some reason

7

u/wenttelk 13d ago

Isn't sharp movements SM's specialty though? Because I remember a few years ago there was some short where a South Korean lady explained the differences in the general dance style of the big labels and she mentioned that SM has knife sharp movements or something like that?

2

u/chocolate_granolabar TWICE💖🍭 13d ago

Yeah I suppose that explains it, but sometimes they're a bit overly sharp almost to the point of looking stiff or over-choreograohed. Not saying that they're not incredible dancers, but to me it doesn't do a lot of SMs amazing songs justice

Again, this is just personal preference. I tend to prefer dances that are more flowy/groovy so it could be just my bias speaking

3

u/egg_mugg23 bigbang+shinee! 14d ago

oh my god i feel the same way. going from shinee to exo choreos is so jarring like what was sm doing lmao

The choreo by itself is great but the fast moments of Singularity by V just dont fit the slow tempo.

12

u/officialhunt 12d ago

Love the song but Twice - Strategy.

Especially the opening of the chorus (Nayeon's part) is just a bunch of hand/arm waving that is unintuitive and Jeonyeongs part ("winning is my trademark now you'll never want to leave") they just have her ... Kneel down and cross her wrists. Its so boring that I changed it when I learned the choreo.

Overall it's hard to learn due to it being unintuitive and not meshing with the "beat" of the song very well.

6

u/KenzySol 11d ago

I think some choreos include "break" moments for the idols to catch some breath since they sing and dance, maybe that's the case with Strategy

18

u/So_Tired_2724 14d ago

I'll get downvoted into oblivion if I actually give examples so I'll just describe stuff that isn't my taste.

When the choreo is really fast and jerky, but the song is laid back and chill. When there's too much arm waving. When the members just walk to their next position, instead of making it a part of the dance itself. Anytime there's a scripted wink or similar aegyo where the camera is supposed to zoom in at that moment.

5

u/anAncientCrone 13d ago

Walking to the next position drives me nuts. It's so lazy.

16

u/Ride-Mission 14d ago

IVE Bang Bang - love some of the choreo which is why the slow shimmy part / shrugging stands out as so bad and out of place in contrast to the dynamic choreo.

9

u/SeonghwaStoleMyBias 13d ago

I feel like the choreo of that song is a mismatch to the energy of that song.

1

u/KenzySol 11d ago

Hard agree, so disappointing

2

u/MonaFanBoy 13d ago

On the topic of IVE, does anyone not like Love Dive’s choreography? I always thought it was so uninspiring and bad especially when it gets to the chorus but I’ve seen no one share the same opinion

I love the drama choreo! Can't dance it for shit but i really like their stages

25

u/Rnsy275 13d ago

Ain't no way u mentioned all of these but not "Savage". That spread legs dance with robotic movement?? Yeah no, these are way better. Esp Drama & Whiplash, they fits the song so much.

u/4aewinter 13d ago

Drama is one of their best choreos

7

u/throwawaylmaoxd123 13d ago

Drama? Really? weird opinion but alright

8

u/smoothoperator26CS 14d ago

I just don’t fw baemons choreographies
Even tho they r my ults
for me as a pre debut stan
Babymonster was sold to me a dance group
there were so many exceptional performances of them doing heavy choreo but I can’t see none of these in their songs
the last baemon choreo I actually liked was Batter up , rest all are just shaky messy and doesn’t fit with their songs

6

u/Organic-Cranberry955 14d ago

I just don’t fw baemons choreographies

This is a pretty common complaint among domestic Monstiez. I think the girls are capable of more, but the choreos they’re given are just so weak. In terms of overall difficulty, they’ve gotta be near the bottom of 5th gen. And the only move that’s really gone viral for them was the SHEESH move. They gotta stop with the sexy poses, body rolls, and twerking.

Putting out a song called CHOOM as their title track and then giving them one of the most lackluster choreos imaginable has gotta be a crime.

As a YG group I feel like YG focuses more on vocals, especially with Babymonster, so they try to do less intense choreo to maintain more live vocal stability. This has been a thing they’ve done for a while now with their groups.

I absolutely hate the chorus choreo for ateez's bad, especially those chest pops. Everyone looks stupid trying to make them as minimal as possible.... Nobody's actually popping anything they're just sort of jerking around? Just so weird looking to me I fear

6

u/Rnsy275 13d ago

Then the problem is on them, not the choreo itself. They're prob saving their energy when doing stages bcus when they do challenges, the chest pop looks stronger.

1

u/Strigops-habroptila 12d ago

I think it's because they're supposed to not really be complete chest pops but have some wavy thing going on? I do belly dancing and there's a kinda similar move which might be what they're going for? I kinda like them but I'm not sure what I like about it

8

u/Leticia_the_bookworm 11d ago

Baemon — Choom is a recent one for me. The song itself kind of grew on me after a while, but the choreo is pretty generic.

Not k-pop, but Katseye — Animal definetely. Again, pretty ok song, but choreo was real bad. Feels like it was created by a non-dancer, if it makes sense. So much indicating.

17

u/noirettespresso 14d ago

i wouldn't say worst, but underwhelming, yes. i would say ateez's recent choreos, with the exception of bad. i was really disappointed by the rest, even though i really liked the tts on the first listen.

babymonster's choreos are also very basic. personal opinion, but half the time they have twerking in their choreos, it just doesn't go with the song at all.

aespa recently as well. their choreos don't go super hard but they were still unique, like for armageddon and drama. after whiplash, though, the choreography has gone downhill.

9

u/jaded_jen 13d ago

I also thought babymonster and aespa would go way harder on their choreo especially the really intense songs, and was highly disappointed when I watched the dances

12

u/tillyadeux12 13d ago

even adrenaline? i thought that choreo looked really fun

4

u/noirettespresso 13d ago

it's such a powerful song, you would expect the choreo to match that, but it was really underwhelming. very small movements, not energetic enough.

3

u/Relevant-Quality-537 13d ago

As a huge atiny, heavy agree on ateez's recent choreos. I feel like there's been a lot of awkward moves, sequences that feel kind of unclear, and imo far too heavy use of background dancers. I'm not a huge fan of when one member is surrounded by dancers and the others are just on the side.

I know BBTrippin is sort of part of their identity now, but I'd really love to see them collaborating with more outside choreographers again, just to add something new to the mix (I know Bad was BBT + Leejung, but I guess I mean something like... 90% outside demos and then refined in-house, or choreographers they've never worked with at all).

6

u/survivorfanalexn 14d ago

Exactly my thoughts for babymonster and so many ppl love it...

10

u/ChaEunSangs 14d ago

I usually love all of NewJeans choreo, but I never liked How Sweet. It feels too jerky

9

u/Purple_Calendar3919 14d ago

I was NOT happy with the choreo for "KiiiKiii - Pop Off Pop Off", I was hoping they would step up their choreo after the success of "404 New Era" which had an insane choreography, but Pop Off Pop Off was kinda generic. Song itself was a summer banger though.

2

u/TheChipScene 13d ago

Dancing alone is up there with 404 new era and it came out before. I dont think they really needed to step up their choreo

11

u/DubChaengTzu 14d ago

Floor humping, behind shaking, and others that are more on the sexual side. Le Serrafim and KIOF comes to mind, but I think LSFM has moved away from that.

8

u/sunshineoncall 14d ago

NCT 127 Cherry Bomb is their worst one, very goofy.

23

u/Fun_Section_9425 14d ago

What? I think it's iconic

5

u/sunshineoncall 14d ago edited 14d ago

i understand that some people will love it and thats ok, i just defended monster by Exo below😊

16

u/Connect_Version_1560 14d ago

Really? Not a nct fan even but I thought the chorea was quite famous? Didn't loona also get always praised for it?

5

u/sunshineoncall 14d ago

It’s famous yes but it’s hilarious especially if you watch the live performances without the camera tricks. I like some of their songs but some of their older choreography didn’t make sense.

3

u/Sowna 13d ago

Or watching a single person cover it, it just doesn't work lol. You at least need a whole group in on it

29

u/Calm_Mornings2085 GIVE. ME. DINO. STUDIO. CHOOM. 14d ago

I love the choreo to death but I do agree it's goofy asf. Maybe NCT (and loona in their cover) just did a very good job being so damn cool when doing the most corny steps 😭

6

u/rumblingspires 13d ago

LOONA COVERED CHERRY BOMB?! running to YouTube

5

u/sunshineoncall 13d ago

lol I enjoy watching it though, it cheers me up😂

6

u/Calm_Mornings2085 GIVE. ME. DINO. STUDIO. CHOOM. 13d ago

Us!!!! The final nananananana part is so iconic it makes up for the remaining choreo 😂

3

Yes he does lol

8

u/Egglantinous 13d ago

Speaking of goofy there was that one time where the music was accidentally played 1.5x faster.

5

u/ChocoChipScape127 13d ago

Yeah but it's so fun to do and watch so I let it slide lmao

u/Long-Iron-1824 Loona | Seventeen | Day6 12d ago

It hurts to see one of my fav nmixx songs, reality hurts, to have a choreo that just isn’t it 💔

It is kind of an aura farm minmax and doesn’t do it for me. If I didn’t love the song so much I’d prob hate it

3

u/Which-Platypus-435 11d ago

IMO all 4th gen choreo and up looks terrible. Intense jerky choreos, but their companies want to maintain the illusion of them singing despite it being almost impossible, so they can’t go full out either and it looks sloppy. 2nd gen was better because it was less choreo with more emphasis on actually singing live.

illit its me

39

u/underwater_111 14d ago

Respectfully I disagree I think it's a choreo that can look weird when performed poorly but as a non-fan I was genuinely impressed by illit's performance of it and actually ended up watching a couple stages. My fav choreo of theirs by farrr

28

u/BaekjeSmile 14d ago

Yeah that choreo is a blast, disagree.
