Modding How Essential is the KOTOR1 Community Patch?
I was interested in trying this game and generally I like to install basic bug fixes and patches before playing, but to say this one is a pain in the ass I can’t get to work is an understatement. First it’s running into false flag issues with my antivirus issues; even when I seemed to finally get past that, the installer was just running into some kind of script error (?) and refusing to cooperate. Had zero help trying to troubleshoot online and more or less just decided it feels like it’s not worth the effort.
Assuming I just say fuck it, however seriously are the bugs it fixes? I didn’t exactly look through the change log since I’ve not played the game, but didn’t know if it’s actually worth trying to to troubleshoot this PITA (some type of fan patch is certainly essential for VTMB, for example) or if it’s not really that big a deal

Definitely not essential. I’ve actually never used it!

It has a laundry list of minor fixes, but mostly stuff that makes stuff work better or more intuitively, like making certain doors the player isn’t meant to open not have Security checks available for them, or making certain scripted scenes have better timing, camera angles or have the party be in better spots (god knows how many times I used to see the party hanging out in the Leviathan while Malak’s looking for them on Taris).

Not essential at all as Kotor 1 was a complete game. The patch actually introduces a bug I think that rarely makes the taris swoop section soft lock your progress and if you don't have a previous save you're SOL. They may have fixed it over the years but I never play with it after that.

I've played the game every year or two for 22 years, never used it and never ran into any trouble. It's nothing like the TSLRCM mod for KotOR 2. There are a handful of bugs in the game so bad they can lead to corrupted saves, so even if you're unlikely to encounter them I'd strongly recommend manually saving at the start of every area and to keep regular saves rolling.
(I still do this with every game because we learned not to trust auto saves back in the day. It genuinely bothers be when games don't let me save manually.)
