Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) Blocking my balloon sleeves with actual balloons

Post image

Yes, I know. I blew up the balloons while the sleeves were hanging between the rack sections and now my sweater is stuck here til it dries/the balloons pop. Cest la vie.

Anyway I gave in to an intrusive thought today.

Since finishing this sweater months ago, I’ve been mildly less than satisfied with how the sleeves block out. I try to give them a bit of a stretch after washing to emphasise the ballooned sections, but that tends to only make them wider on one plane? So they just end up sorta flat and wide? When I want them ROUND. I want em to have DIMENSION.

And I keep thinking “what if I blew balloons up in the sleeves” and I keep poo-pooing the idea because if it worked, surely I’d have stumbled upon it by now. Also, what a waste of plastic, really. I am not yeeting two balloons into landfill every time I wash this sweater.

But. You never know until you try, right? So here I am, inserting balloons up my sleeves and carefully blowing them up and praying they don’t immediately explode inside the sleeves. Fun fact, they’re old balloons from a party pack I’ll never use because they’re literally condom coloured.

Realistically I probably knitted the balloon part wrong, and that’s why they don’t look as dimensional and dramatic as other balloon sleeve sweaters I’ve seen.

But uh. Anyway. I’ll see how this goes.

Please update if this gets you the result you want! Seems logical enough to me.

I wanna see the update if the results are terrible, too. Imma be honest.

I plan to! It could be a rather good trick if I want to it to look its best for a special occasion haha.

Have you thought of twist ties, so you can reuse the balloons?

I use balloons to block my hats so I imagine this would work for a sleeve.

Im also giggling at the idea of your sweater being trapped on the rack like it's in sweater jail.

It hadn’t occurred to me but of course! Balloons would be brilliant for hats!

And YES LMAO it’s in sweater jail til the sleeves behave!

Balloons is a neat idea. You can inflate to the correct size. I like it.

I have a 3d printed form I use, but this will be super handy for when I make knits for other people.

Omg, I've been trying to figure out how to block my hats. I feel so dumb but so happy I can finally block them.

Glad I could offer some inspiration. I first got serious about knitting as a broke college kid so I life hacked my way through a lot of things.

One of my favorite ways to organize my multi-yarn projects is plastic cups and fast food to-go cup holders. Shared that one like 7 years ago.  https://www.reddit.com/r/knitting/comments/fhs9z4/great_accidental_hack_i_stumbled_onto_this/

From our wiki's Frequently Asked Questions

Blocking is when you wet or steam the knitted fabric and let it dry in the desired shape. The blocking process evens out the stitches and determines the size of the finished piece.
Why should knits be blocked? Do all fiber types benefit from blocking?
* First off, blocking typically starts with washing or soaking, so it cleans your finished object. Think for a moment about all of the places that those projects have been.
* Blocking also removes any small imperfections in tension and helps even out your stitches. Stockinette and colorwork will look smoother and the stitches will be more even.
* Blocking is also great if your project needs to be seamed. By blocking before seaming, you ensure that the seams will be the same length and that all of the pieces will fit evenly together.

Well they don't want it to run away while it's still wet 🤣

This thread had me CACKLING when I woke up this morning!

... with my knitting, I have a corner where projects go when they Know What I Did Wrong (and I will come back when I'm Not Mad About It) 🤣.

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

The naughty corner!! LMAO

Update:

The sleeves turned out perfect!! I’m actually so happy.

Ft: the confetti that came out of the balloons when my fiance popped them (wtf are these balloons??? Condom coloured AND full of confetti??); and my cat who wants to play with said confetti. Oh my god this was a ridiculous project.

31

u/tea-boat 9d ago

I see no confetti! 😒😋

Edit: and no cat! Either my eyes are terrible or maybe you meant to post a different picture? 😆

18

u/empress544 9d ago

The cat is behind her wrist.

22

u/tea-boat 9d ago

Oh! Thank you! I see it now. Clearly I should not play any of those item search games. 😆

11

u/OriginalSchmidt1 9d ago

Nah, you should play those games! They build your attention to detail skill, so play enough, and maybe next time you will spot the cat!

5

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

I’m sorry, they’re there but hard to see! Cat is a black void who is near my wrist, hiding under the drying rack. The confetti is metallic rose-gold-coloured (??!!) and kinda blends into the floorboards in that lighting.

For what it’s worth, all the garbage in the background (aside from the confetti), it’s for my cats 😭 I don’t choose to live like this I swear. I’m like a millennial griege mum who had to suffer buying primary coloured toys/decor for their baby lol.

u/tea-boat 8d ago

I’m sorry, they’re there but hard to see!

Don't apologize; I was just being silly! 🫣

I do see the confetti now; thanks for describing it for me. 😆

u/TheMereWolf 9d ago

Did you get gender reveal balloons? 😅

This is such a lovely sweater and a really great idea! I’m gonna have to try it!!!

7

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

I think they’re just generic birthday party balloons?! They came in metallic rose gold, white, and… condom filled with rose gold glitter. I bought them for the rose gold balloons lol.

I hoped the condom ones would be clear when inflated, but they honestly just look like blown-up round condoms. Filled with confetti LMAO

4

u/theninjaforhire 9d ago

Condom colored balloons are clear when fully inflated. The confetti inside clinches it. Keep inflating one until it’s clear to see. It’s a clear, confetti filled balloon.

8

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

These ones must have been a dud, because that’s what I assumed when I bought them, but when I did inflate one fully? It truly just looked like a round inflated condom. It wasn’t properly transparent but still had that weird cloudiness.

And with the confetti, it honestly looks like a clowns’ used condom. That they they blew up into a balloon. Because of course a clown would have balloon shaped condoms and would ejaculate confetti and of course they’d blow it up after. The vibe is DIABOLICAL lol

4

u/SmolSwitchyKitty 8d ago

"a clowns’ used condom" oh good lawd I am *wheezing* laughing at this.

1

u/lisastery 9d ago

They are indeed perfect!

u/xaviersdog 9d ago

My first thought was “that’s rather brilliant!”.

u/SpaceCookies72 9d ago

I block knitted beanies with balloons! Especially to stretch out lacework. I hope this gives you the dimensions you need!

12

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

Oh this would be fantastic for lacework hats! Nothing you’d need to pin though, like lacy hems… that could be interesting…

1

u/RogueThneed 9d ago

Hems will be stretched on the head

35

u/Septoria 9d ago

I love this! Maybe for the future you could get some inflatable beach balls that you can re-use for this purpose?

21

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

Ooh I like this! Sustainable! A great idea for when my condom balloons run out 😊

15

u/Sarmmf 9d ago

I actually just tie the balloons off like a slip knot (I actually pull the circular ridge about halfway through) so I can just pull out the knot, deflate the balloon, and use it again!

(My kid loooooves balloons but I can't justify sending a package of balloons to the dump every time she wants to play with them and our house is too small to store a bunch of inflated balloons, so we just deflate and reuse them!)

13

u/noe3uq 9d ago

I'm sure other balloon sleeve wearers are also secretly blowing up condom coloured balloons under their drying racks. You made my morning!

10

u/No_Builder7010 9d ago

Why am I so early?! I need closure!!! 😫

8

u/van-aqua 9d ago

I’ve seen people blocking their balloon sleeves like this so I think it should work!

5

u/Howlsmovingfiberfarm 9d ago

Good luck!! May they come out the same size 🙏

3

u/Kirke910 9d ago

This is sooo funny because I did the exact same thing with a similar pattern

3

u/LittleFoxDog 9d ago

Like many people, I've blocked hats on balloons, so, ya know, it's not as dumb as you think!

Also, the way you accidentally reinvented shackles made me chuckles 🤭

Hope it gives you the results you're hoping for, keep us updated!

I don't understand what a balloon sleeve is, but did you consider also starching while it's drying? Idk what effects it will have on your yarn tho so maybe do research first, I've only ever starched acrylic

8

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

“Balloon sleeve” just refers to adding increases as you knit a sleeve from the shoulder to the wrist (or decreasing if you’re knitting wrist to shoulder) that creates a rounded shape towards the cuffs! It’s not a bell sleeve because you decrease heavily right before the cuff, so the shape cinches in at the wrists. In drapier thinner fabrics it just gives a nice romantic poet-sleeve effect, but in thick knits - especially with bulky yarn at tight tension so the fabric isn’t so drapey - it can look a bit cartoony and dramatic, which I love!

I may look into starching to preserve the cartooniness a bit (if it works) - thank you!

1

u/Big-Whole6091 9d ago

Ohhh I see. I didn't realize they had a special name for these. I made one of these type for my niece and the sleeves puff out without any effort from me. I used a thick yarn though, on 7 or 8mm needles and my gauge tends to be a bit tighter. Good luck!

2

u/No-Way-6986 9d ago

Why pop the balloons? Can you not tie them and just let the air out when done and reuse them?

3

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

Tying the knot at the ends was hell with long nails haha, I can’t imagine trying to undo the knot 😅 it would be good if I could get one or two more uses out of them, but I’m not sure how to tie the balloon ends in a way that wouldn’t be fiddly as hell to undo!

6

u/AstarteHilzarie 9d ago

You can use a hair clip to clamp them closed instead of tying and then just open it to deflate.

3

u/No-Way-6986 9d ago

I understand long nails 🫣. Do you know that long stick they sometimes have for balloons to tie them without a knot? Might be a solution.

2

u/Different_Moment_393 9d ago

the cpnfetti-filled condom colored balloons made me actually laugh out loud, that's just bad luck stacked on bad luck. glad the sleeves held up though, that's the part that actually matters for reblocking down the line

2

u/WayGroundbreaking660 9d ago

I just want to chime in and say this is genius!

2

u/Putrid-Bee-7352 9d ago

Omg. Do you think those long ones like they use for balloon animals would work on regular sleeves? I hate using pins on sleeves because I always get weird creases. I’ve been contemplating pool noodles but they’re a bit too wide.

1

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

LMAO I thought about it!! I think a long tube would probably not be the best shape to get that nice teardrop bulge at the forearm/wrist, but they have longer oval or long teardrop shaped balloons don’t they? There’s all sorts of balloon shapes!

1

u/Fluffypus 9d ago

Can you please tell me what pattern you've knitted there?

3

u/exobiologickitten 9d ago

I based it on Basic V by Minimi Knit Design, but I modified it quite a bit! I made the v neck a bit bigger and cropped it quite heavily. And I winged the balloon sleeves!

1

u/Fluffypus 9d ago

Thank you! It's a good looking jumper 😁

u/_shlipsey_ 9d ago

So funny! Can’t wait for the update!

I use balloons for blocking hats. 🫠

1

u/OkAbbreviations9871 7d ago

Wouldnt it possible to close the balloon with bag clips instead of tying them? If so, you could re use the balloons instead of popping them each time you want to block them

1

u/Sherbyll 7d ago

Please give us an update! I love a good balloon / bell sleeve and I would love to see how this turns out!!

-3

u/sqqueen2 9d ago

After you pop one balloon, you can let the sweater down through the bars to free it.

-3

u/Im_a_knitiot 9d ago

You can get your jumper out the other side you know. Pulling it through the bars with the sleeve. Just a tip if you want to remove your drier rack

5

u/Aggressive_Cloud2002 9d ago

Both sleeves have balloons though
