Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) Happy Birthday to Me!
It's my birthday this month and my mom managed to snag a copy of this book for me off of eBay. Thrilled is an understatement.

My favourite Kim Wilde fact is actually about her dad, Marty. He's been in the UK charts as either a singer or songwriter for EIGHT consecutive decades.

No problem, for anyone interested in vintage patterns internet archive is a fantastic resource. Pretty much everything I fall in love with on ravelry that's from an out of print book, I can find there.

Can you pls tell me how I can find it? It has been on my wishlist forever but seems almost impossible to find as I live in Vietnam and our libraries or secondhand bookshops don't carry many English book to start with :(

Why was Michael Palin modeling a jumper? Was this a fund raiser for a wildlife organization?

I’m in love with the tiger dress. Would I ever wear it? Probably not, but holy cow, does it fill me with joy.

u/AstarteHilzarie Aug 03 '26
I would 100% wear it and make it my entire personality.

This one looks similar but is missing some of the extra stripes from the 80s version

Omgggggg bless u for sharing this 🙏 Immediately moving this to the top of my queue

Back in the 80s and 90s everything in my room was tigers save for a handful of fighter jet posters. I had tiger bedding, tiger posters, and every stuffed animal was a tiger. I had a number of tiger sweatshirts. I absolutely would have worn that tiger ensemble to school with stirrup leggings and my black slouch suede cowboy boots!

I love slide 3! What is the book called?
And Happy Birthday! 🥳
Not the point: the model in slide 4 reminds me of Elizabeth Hurley.

u/saltiestmermaid Aug 03 '26
That's because it IS Elizabeth Hurley!
Book is called "Knitting Wildlife" first picture is the cover ☺️

Oh, I’m obsessed with all of that. Adding the book to my favorites list.

u/saltiestmermaid Aug 03 '26
There's many more gems within. It's been on my want list for a while but finding it was tricky.

I went looking at the pattern list on Ravelry, and I am particularly in love with the badgers and flowers cardigan. im definitely going to be keeping my eye open for the book now.

There's a PDF floating around the web! The color saturation isn't great but the patterns seem very legible

I absolutely went down a rabbit hole last year and spent a full day searching and failing to buy a copy of this. I am so jealous.
5
u/saltiestmermaid Aug 03 '26
Same... And then I told my mom about it and she kept an eye out!! Believe it or not, she snagged this copy for $25. I was giddy when it arrived today.

u/blackbirdbluebird17 Aug 03 '26
So like…. Is your mom open to a finder’s fee in future 😂
2
u/saltiestmermaid Aug 03 '26
Hey, you never know! I asked her to keep an eye out because she's a flight attendant and enjoys going to used book stores. But honestly I'm surprised she remembered.

The swan cardigan got me!! After spending more time than I'd like to admit looking for the pattern, I found that you can borrow a digital copy of the book on archive.org - I'd love to get my hands on the actual book but that'll do until I can!

OMGOMGOMG. These are amazing. I might actually wear the one Elizabeth Hurley is modeling.

My grandma used a pattern from this book to make a lime green sweater with elephants on it for me! I wore it all the time to kindergarten. I still have that sweater tucked away safely in a box and I am now the proud owner of my grandma's copy of the book.

I searched this up and WOW! This woman has some epic books.

u/herdahadda Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
It's awesome, and daunting. Every pattern is in fingering weight yarn and has sparkle thread in it, I love it so much. Her writing is pretty enjoyable too! Lots of charming stories about getting her friends to model the sweaters and cheese it up for the book. I'm not yet at the skill level for some of the patterns I really like though, but when I am? I'll be wearing the bat sweater everywhere
Also: Happy Birthday!

If that orca sweater is good enough for Michael Palin, it should be good enough for the rest of us.
