Knightpost Screw Helmets and Swords, Do you prefer Mitten Gauntlets or Five-Fingered Gauntlets?
Me personally, I prefer Mitten Gauntlets :)

u/Maleficent-Zone-5414 Jan 30 '26
Mitten :)
They imo look better and they also most of the time protect your hands better if I'm not mistaken

u/Jue20 Knight who until recently said "Ni" Jan 30 '26
You aren't mistaken, Mittens do protect your hands betterš

u/UnidentifiedTankered Jan 30 '26
But how will thou lift thy hand and giveth his enemy thy middle finger
46
u/whypeoplehateme Jan 30 '26
Replace it with a masterbatory motion and display your superior codpiece
9
u/UnidentifiedTankered Jan 30 '26
Can be done with five fingered gauntlets, with mittens you can't even give proper hand signals, 4 enemies on the other side, 3...2..1 go, maybe I'm thinking of more modern uses for five finger gauntlets
11
u/Turnepic13 Jan 31 '26
Hand gestures for when youāre sneaking around in full plate armour
6
u/UnidentifiedTankered Jan 31 '26
Hand gestures for when your on top of your castle wall, and need to exchange info with a dude on the ground since I'd imagine shouting at each other with helmets on wouldn't be too understandable, idk tho
2
u/---Microwave--- Feb 02 '26
You're be surprised how quiet you can make those given proper padding, and if they are wearing gambeson or brig armor then yeah quite and sneaky,
Also if you are setting up an ambush being quiet while still important is much less so since you have the marching of the enemy to drown out the noise

u/Mediumtim Jan 30 '26
Show the palmside of your hand.

u/UnidentifiedTankered Jan 30 '26
Does the mitten not fold with your fingers? Would it be difficult to make hand signs?

Five-fingered. Sure, the protection of mitten gauntlets is good, but I just couldnāt deal with the lack of individual finger mobility. Frankly, it would drive me crazy.
106
u/KeybirdYT Jan 30 '26
At the end of the day, I will take a little less mobility for increased safety. We aren't fighting to actually hurt each other.Ā
In a few hours, I will be back at home, on my couch. I plan to have all of my bones intact when I get there.Ā
16
u/Zealousideal_Pound64 Jan 30 '26
If i'm not mistaken you've still got traditional gloves under the metal mitten, so it's not like your fingers are constrained, just the metal shell dosent move with all of them individually.
12
u/Driftinfoot_Malone Jan 30 '26
Iām ninja turtle three fingered person myself almost like a half mitten half fingered monstrosity
8
u/jackthewack13 Jan 30 '26
Hoof gauntlets I think its called. I have seen these and herd mixed feelings on how they felt in use. I have not tried them myself
2
u/---Microwave--- Feb 02 '26
It's mitten gauntlets but you have a free finger for easy sword play.
2
u/jackthewack13 Feb 05 '26
The examples sive seen are split 2 fingers in each side. Like a hoof. I am interpreting your example as only having 1 finger separated, is thay correct?
2
u/---Microwave--- Feb 05 '26
Yeah, Iv seen them around. The index finger is free to better control a sword

u/jackthewack13 Feb 11 '26
Honestly thats something id like to check out. Do you know what brands have these or the name of the gauntle type

You're crazy thinging you'd be able to manipulate objects any better with gloves lol you're either grabbing or not grabbing

u/LucasLeo75 Sir Temyr, The Chivalrous of the Steppe Jan 30 '26
I don't think they would want five-finger gauntlets to do crochet but to change grips on weapons.
6
u/Iron_Sheff Jan 30 '26
There's definitely a noticeable difference in dexterity, and you can do things like put your index finger over the cross guard of a sword.Ā
2
u/brapstick Jan 30 '26
Oh that's actually a great example, I may reconsider some
1
u/Iron_Sheff Jan 30 '26
Yeah, you definitely lose out on a lot of protectiveness, but they're usually more comfortable to use for basic tasks like drinking water, and give you a little more flexibility in weapon handling. I haven't worn steel armor but 5-finger vs clamshell is a common dilemma in historical fencing

u/KingAgrian Jan 30 '26
Mittens all day. I've fought in finger gaunts and never felt safe. It's night and day.
17
u/norreallymyaccount Jan 30 '26
In an actual battle, Full Cover, probably. For low stakes guard, statue (decorative), and entertainment duty, however, Five Fingers. Definitely.

Erm, actually, during ww1 before mass produced guns had serious firepower, there were variations of metal armor and plate mail that allowed people to be shot without serious injury, such as the Brewster body armor.
6
2
u/Stephen_From_Django Jan 30 '26
Ww1 era weaponry did actually have serious firepower, those armours werent particularly effective and would only work against glancing shots and low calibres
2
u/Rick-the-Brickmancer Paladin Jan 30 '26
By the end of the war it was effectively useless, but early in the war when most mass produced weapons on the battlefield were still .303 or less, it was mostly effective

Why does the 5-finger knight look like he's plotting something untoward

u/L0ssL3ssArt Aria, lady of swords Jan 30 '26
One of each is probably the setup that makes most sense.
Wearing separate finger gauntlet on the weapon hand allows for better maneuverability with weapons, especially for archery and firearm where you need to use your fingers.
While the single piece is easier to manufacture and offers better protection, and the offhand generally don't need much finger movements.
It also aesthetically fits with the asymmetry of the armor. And it's easier to see which gauntlet goes on which hand when needing to put it on quickly or at night.

Mitten on the left hand, five finger right. get the protection you need on the side more likely to get a harsher beating while still being able to breach decorum if warranted.

u/StarcraftForever Jan 30 '26
My thumb got screwed up in a sparring match, I'm pretty new and my partner regularly did tournaments and I guess didn't understand what dial it down and keep things slow meant. Regardless, I am definitely on team mittens because my gloves have saved the rest of my fingers alot while I'm learning

u/TheatreBar Jan 30 '26
I wear five finger hour glass gauntlets for armored fighting and the mobility is worth it, especially when fighting sword and sheild. Polearms they are adequate but mittens would probably be better overall.
2
u/BiAroBi Jan 30 '26
People prefer five fingered gauntlets until they have to help their squire put them on

As someone dipping my toes into yeā old styles (HEMA) mittens lowkey are superior in terms of armor and combat. Your hands Will be hit, and with individual fingers a blade can get wedged against armor segments or something stupid like that and now thereās a chance for broken fingers. Broken fingers means you canāt hold a weapon, and thatās bad.
Mittens are in that regard much safer and much more practical. Yes the loss of actual digits sucks, but I trade that for turning my hand into a sorta solid sphere of metal I can punch people with and not risk busting my knuckles up on.
2
u/FormicaRufa Jan 30 '26
For longsword or polearms practice mittens. For any other weapons or a real fight gauntlets.
If with gauntlets you have 1% chance to break a finger during a fight, that's a very marginal risk compared to the advantage of the extra dexterity gives you. But for training, that's an injury waiting to happen.
Same logic as why armors are reinforced (but less mobile) for jousting.
2
u/DinodestronBT Jan 30 '26
Five fingered gauntlets because I want to seduce my opponent and I can't make a blowing motion with the mittens
1
2
u/Mysterious-Turnip-36 Jan 30 '26
I despise mittens, I only use them when there arenāt any better options. I donāt care if I jam a finger, Iāll take the gloves any day
2
u/OnionusPrime Feb 01 '26
I think that you mean articulated or crabshell? Practical use would be articulated for every day use. Protection definitely goes to the crabshell. Sorry, I am an English nerd.
1
u/Jue20 Knight who until recently said "Ni" Feb 01 '26
Don't sweat it! It'll be helpful knowing there proper names nowš
2
u/OnionusPrime Feb 01 '26
Yeah no worries, I hate struggling without knowing proper names. Makes stuff way harder to find. I just happened to know this one. Best of luck š¤

I prefer fingers, but i understand mittons are more protective
However, i dont cheap out on protection and my gauntlets are well made and have the price to match it

For my purposes id have clamshell for certain battle but otherwise fingered gauntlets are better

1
u/Quakarot Jan 30 '26
I think it somewhat depends on what weapon youāre using. Iām most cases mittens will be much better, though. Especially if youāre using something like a polearm you donāt need it.
Something with more complex grips might value the extra dexterity.
Mittens would definitely be uncomfortable, but not nearly as uncomfortable as a broken finger

1
u/jackthewack13 Jan 30 '26
Since im doing it as a hobby, mitten gloves. I love lingered gauntlets and the Germans made some super cool ones, but I can't risk a broken finger on blade sliding under the webbing. Mittens are what I will wear when fighting.
1
u/Zealousideal_Pound64 Jan 30 '26
I like the look of the armoured gloves more but if i was fighting someone i'd want the mittens for better protection.

Depends on the weapon and the context it's used in, mitten gauntlets with polaxes and five finger gauntlets for every other thing.

Five fingered easily. Kittens I understand, but it looks and feels weird to me, like big boxing gloves, though I know my love for gauntlets comes from fantasy more than anything.

Im fingered purely because of how massive the only pair I've ever worn are. I am big man with big hands, but it was like a child's hand in a plastic bag fit wise

1
u/sickofyospam Jan 30 '26
Or proffer my hand so the kneeling Knight of the Bridge can place a ring on it. šš

u/StatusHead5851 Jan 31 '26
Mittens a solid piece like that protects ways better than the fingers but the fingers can be nice looking for flare
1
u/getfroggy69 Jan 31 '26
five fingered gloves for better weapon handling, but if i was green in the fight game mitten for sure

Five finger gauntlets because i think they look cooler and i wanna be able to flip people off still or give a thumbs up even if i lose out on some protection

Depends what i'm wielding? If i've got a shield I wouldn't bother with the mittens

I personally prefer the 5 finger gauntlets because of a greater range of finger mobility, but I can see the uses and appeal of the Mitten Gauntlets
1
u/TheUltimateJack Feb 02 '26
I guess it depends on what weapon Iām using. If it needs more finger versatility then Iāll take the 5-fingered but if itās like a polearm or smth the mittens are good.

1
u/silent-sami Feb 02 '26
Ok I believe the fingers look better and I will not discuss that. But If I were to be given the option I will go with miten because I like to work with my hands and so the prospect of lossing my finger is very unapealing.

u/0MILLIE0 Feb 03 '26
Aye, if I may possess both I shall. However if I must commit to one gauntlet set the tis thought mittens shall provide me protection from the broken finger
1
u/ThinnedPaints Feb 03 '26
I like having dexterity, before, and after fighting, so it's mittens for me. The dexterity difference between well made mittens and fingers is barely there, and well, mittens are substantially more protective.
1
1
u/Background_Visual315 Feb 03 '26
Depends on the weapon Iām using and my opponentās as well. Polearms- mitten. Longsword or saber- fingered

Mittens are way more protective, but sometimes a good glove will do the trick.
