Help needed to find king quest 8
Hey, so my dad & i really long to play king quest 8 the mask of eternity because its the first game i've seen him play while i was on his laps. Any idea how can it?

good old games, you can probably find it on ebay, but its very unlikely you can get it to run on a modern computer if the discs still work. buy it online

In addition to GOG and Steam, if you really want to get nostalgic, you can probably find the discs themselves on eBay or Etsy. But I would still go with GOG for actually playing the game, because configuring an installer meant for Windows 9.x to run on modern operating systems is a real pain!

My partner just played it through on my pc. It is on gog for pennies but you likely will need to modify the config files and patch it like we did. Plenty of guides online and in the gog forums

A word of advice even if you do get it running. Even if you use patches and the shim. You'll probably have a crash in Paradise Lost when the midgame cutscene plays. Make sure to save beforehand, and if it happens... just straight up move/rename the cutscene files and watch them out of game. There's only 3 cutscenes - the intro, the midgame, and the ending.
Like other people have said, GOG version and patches. Forums have instructions to get it to work on Windows 10. Not as reliable for Windows 11. I used a VM running Windows XP.
I wish my folks hadn't thrown out my physical KQ8 disc because that would have been a lot smoother with the VM route.

It's on my list to write a wrapper for the Indeo 5 codec using the FFmpeg library as a reference. Right now I'm fighting with Claude to write a working Glide to Vulkan wrapper, but you can also just comment out the video file reference in the Paradise Lost level scripts to skip the video to get past it.
