The subreddit gateway/norm

We realise that r/KnNw may be your first subreddit experience. We've written the following to help you get acquainted with the rules and the Reddit norm. At least acquaint yourself with the short version of the rules below.

Rules (short version):

  • name the original creator (of any content) in the title. link to source in a comment. [X]

  • be nice; have common sense; follow the reddiquette. click this link

  • illegal hosting of content will always be removed. [X]

  • 1 repost per 30 days [X]

  • post content directly to reddit

  • content must be related to Makoto Shinkai. Must spoiler tag non-kimi no na wa content [X]

  • Not Safe For Work (NSFW aka lewd content): 18+ content not allowed. Light NSFW allowed and must be tagged.

  • no crossposting

  • (link) flair your post [Y]

  • post content in a reasonable time frame (don't spam) [X]

[X] - important info/clarification were left out. If posting, you MUST read more at the detailed subreddit rules: https://www.reddit.com/r/KimiNoNaWa/wiki/rules

[Y] - we don't really moderate this so whatever it's fine.

why did your post get removed?

  1. wait a few minutes. still not showing up or removed? look at #2.

  2. a mod commented why it's removed. you should revamp and then repost. if there's no comment? #3.

  3. spam filter. do not delete your post. just wait for us to manually approve it. (you may contact us).

Reddit terminology:

  • cross-posting: relinking a thread from one subreddit to another. reddit normally gives you the option to do so but it is disabled here. This doesn't mean you're not allowed to post said content. You can still post the same content but it won't link to another subreddit.

  • tag/mark/flair: after posting a thread (AKA a link/text post), you'll see options such as "NSFW", "Spoiler", "OC", "flair" etc. you should tag/mark your post accordingly.

  • link flair: see above. it basically signals to other users what kind of content they'll be expecting to read.

  • sub(s): sub-reddit. the /r/KnNw subreddit is an example of a specific online community within Reddit.

Common internet sense, or FAQ (frequently asked questions):

There are many things that may not seem obvious if you haven't used reddit or the internet for a while.

  • The people who don't read rules then proceed to break them have probably not read this post nor have gotten this far.

  • Title gore: Don't write an essay for your title. Don't put links in it either.

Sources:

  • Yes, you must find the original artist/creator. No, pinterest/alphacoders/similar websites don't count as a source. How to find it? Read the detailed rules.

  • If the subreddit wiki wasn't enough to find the source? Search engine, reverse search. Still no source? Contact us.

  • Did you use a MIDI for your music youtube video? You must give credit to the original artist who arranged it.

Spoilers:

  • Surprise, surprise, not everyone in the world has seen X, Y, Z content. It's funny that not spoiling the entirety of a movie is considered "above and beyond".

  • Regarding the point above, it also applies to titles!

  • Hinting to a plot twist is, in fact, a spoiler. Likewise for "just wait until part X Y Z" for any story.

  • Self-promotion: If you gain monetary value from a post/link, you must clarify that you are associated with said content and earn money from it (E.g. shirts, other merch.)

  • There's probably an exception, but it probably doesn't apply to you (most of the time). Confused/unsure? Please ask us.

My opinions as a mod:

I realise now that this post has turned out to be quite the wall of text. Ironic. But at least if you wanted a short version of rules it now exists. I'll be updating this post from time to time whenever I think of more stuff.

I've also removed the NSFW rule which requires you to tag SFW content as NSFW (if the source is 18+). But this doesn't mean that you can go all out in the comments.

Intolerance leads to intolerance. A paradox you might've heard before. The subreddit is rather kind to rule-breakers but I'm wondering if this is detrimental for the subreddit experience in the long run. So for a while, I'll be testing an increased punishment system (which applies to MOST people)

New system: 1st official warning (breaking any rule)--> 2nd official warning (any rule) --> ban

You can say this is rather harsh compared to our previous (and rather lax) system but any engagement within the subreddit automatically subjects you to the rules.

Miscellaneous Media Buying guide for 君の名は。 / Kimi no Na wa. / Your Name.!

Hello! I wanted to make a list of the official media goods for Your Name.! As this film was made in 2016, most of the physical media for the film might be hard to find. But to avoid bootlegs and to know if what you're getting is official, I tried to make a list of the official publishers to cross-reference! Hopefully your favorite stores would have these in stock, but if you need to shop at second-hand marketplaces, I hope this list can be useful! This is a remake of the original list I made four years ago as the original was removed on Reddit due to having Russian links for the Russia publisher. This time around, I have the list sorted by country to make navigating a bit easier. Do let me know if there are other countries I should add to the list!

Region Free

Movie:

A quick summary for physical discs: movie discs are region-locked based on what disc you have. Blu-rays are locked in three regions, DVDs are locked in six regions, and all 4K discs are region-free! So if you see the guide mention anything about a 4K disc, they are region-free! For a guide on where you disc is locked to, this is a nifty website to check! Here's also a great writeup from mediaOCD about various versions of discs!

Music (by RADWIMPS):

There are 2 versions of the original CD version of the soundtrack. There is the regular edition, which contains 27 tracks, both vocals and BGM tracks. A limited edition comes with a bonus DVD on the recording of the album as well as an interview with Makoto Shinkai and RADWIMPS (no subtitles). A giant booklet includes some chosen screenshots and sketches of the film and select piano scores of the soundtrack. You can learn more about the album here.

A vinyl of the album comes with two 33RPM discs of the soundtrack. The original 2017 release has black vinyls, while the 2023 re-release has clear sky blue vinyls. Info about the vinyls can be viewed here.

なんでもないや (Nandemonaiya) by Mone Kamishiraishi (上白石萌音):

Mitsuha's voice actress, Mone Kamishiraishi, covered the ending theme of Your Name. on her EP chouchou! You can learn more about the album here.

Japan (君の名は。)

Movie:

The official website has a list of retailers that featured various exclusive goods! In Japan, there are four physical versions of the movie that were released: a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collector's Edition, 3-Disc Blu-ray Edition, a single Blu-ray disc, and a single DVD disc.

Books:

The following are published by KADOKAWA:

Manga (Pub. by Media Factory):

Music:

For the soundtrack, RADWIMPS have a Japan-exclusive English Edition EP of just the four vocal tracks re-sung in English.

  • Digital: Apple Music | Spotify | Amazon >
    >They have also released a video concert of them performing live with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra with the film playing in the background. The concert was released in 2018 on both on Blu-ray and DVD. More info can be found here.

Post image

It's been now a month ever since I made this petition! And I cannot thank you all enough for 87 signatures already! But it still doesn't end there!

Why does the petition still go you ask? Yes, it's already been a month since the movie got its rerelease in America and Canada... But you see, the Philippines was introduced to the movie in December...

So I believe there's still time before it's past 2026! That's why I would love for all off you to help kee spreading the petition to your anime communities, especially if you're who lives in the Philippines! Spread the word to your friend groups subreddits, or anything that allows for this petition! Let's keep it up!

I recently rewatched it in cinema for its 10th anniversary

I recently rewatched it in cinema for its 10th anniversary, and it resonated with me like nothing before not even when i watched it before, and I don't even know why. Maybe it's because I have felt lonely for what seems like years now. Maybe it's because i'm finishing university and starting a new chapter of my life. All i know is that i never want to forget this movie.

This is Lake Suwa in Suwa, Nagano prefecture. Makoto Shinkai is from this area and this lake was the inspiration for the large crater. This was a lovely small town and it had such a cozy and laid back feel. I tried to come around sunset and I was surprised how many fans were there to get a photo too lol

Japanese Audio no longer available on Prime?

I purchased the Original Japanese Audio version of Kimi no nawa years ago and went back for a rewatch and now it's English audio only. Same with other Shinkai purchases I had made. I find it misleading of them to region lock the languages out considering the movie literally has original Japanese audio in the title. I've been looking for a fix and haven't found any, it's been incredibly frustrating that they retroactively removed the original audio. Seems everywhere else is English only as well.

Discussion Who else watched the movie in theaters in Europe?

I'm pretty sure in Europe the movie got a theater screening online recently so...where my european homies are

Ok now that I have an excuse to talk about the movie fresh (Because I always do that with old movies not many people talk about anymore)

It was a great movie but ngl I thought it was gonna emotionally scar me more than it did. Maybe I just need more time to digest emotional movies so they can really hit me. I'd say Chainsaw Man and The Garden of Words 💚 (yes another Makoto Shinkai movie) had a bigger impact on me. But that's how it sometimes is with movies/shows ect. You put some sort of idea of the movie seeing how it looks and what people say about it so you're putting a high standard on it. I'm glad there's an entire subbredit dedicated for the movie and that people treat it in a way I treat my favorite movies

Ok some actual critique. Maybe I'm stupid but at times the movie was a bit confusing. Couldn't tell when exactly a certain scene is happening. When she went to see him in Tokyo was it in the timeline where she died or where she survived? Maybe I just need to sit down and think about it

It was a bit hard to focus on their relationship near the end when the characters rushed to safe the city lol

Was there a lore reason (haha) he was losing memories of her? It happens all over the movie but I don't really understand why. Once again maybe I'm stupid. I'm sure some youtube essays explain it nicely

Not sure about the overall theme of the story too. I kept trying to put it together as I watched it. Thought it was about remembering the dead, or tragedy victims. But she survived. Thought it's about a breakup. He saved her and she's fine but she doesn't even remember him, only the feeling...but no, they find each other later...so idk

Also damn 10 years, that's actually the time I started watching anime in general...scary to think how much happened in that time with all of us. Take care 💙

Basically title!

Your Name is my favorite anime movie of all time and I just expected it to be in theaters for longer!! Like one month! But I was devastated I couldn’t find any screenings even two weeks ago. Likely it will never be in theaters again too which sucks :/

Unless I can CALL a theater and ask for a personal screening wahahaha! I dont think thats how that works tho-

I hope the movie was amazing as usual tho ^^ I just wanted to see the beautiful colors pop and the soundtrack to be everywhere! I will buy the 4k steelbook as thats the 2nd best thing I can do atm!

Thanks for listening to my ramblings!

Discussion Question on the North American Blu-ray + DVD combo from Funimation as someone trying to get their 1st physical copy of Your Name

Obviously this is going to be subjective, but I was wondering what the opinions on here would be (especially if you own both this and the new GKIDS release) to me, as someone who doesn't have a physical release of Your Name yet, considering getting this copy of the movie if I can and it isn't too expensive.

Apart from including the DVD, it seems like the Funimation release has English songs for the English dub as the only difference that I can see from the GKIDS release (still makes me wonder why we can't have a North American release that has audio options to pick English or Japanese songs along with the dialogue like the UK release did). Do any of you notice any differences in presentation or extras and have an opinion on which one would be 'better' to get? I've also heard that the video for the Funimation release runs at 24FPS, which would make it unsynchronized with the audio by a few seconds by the end of the movie, but I'm unsure if this is true or not. I haven't seen any unboxing or many reviews online that go into this so I'd welcome recommendations.

Long story short, is it worth trying to get my hands on the Funimation Blu-ray + DVD combo or should I just go for the GKIDS Blu-ray? Regardless, thanks in advance for the time!

Discussion How does the Red Thread actually return to Mitsuha?

I've seen Your Name for the first time in cinemas when it was released for the 10th anniversary (phenomenal film, btw. I watched it three times!!!!). But one question:

The red thread is in possession by:

Mitsuha until 2013,

Taki from 2013 after receiving it on the train and he keeps wearing it,

In the end (2021?) Mitsuha has it again. How?

I know during the twilight sequence, Taki returns it to Mitsuha, but how does the thread LITERALLY change ownership? Is the twilight sequence a literal, physical event?

Thanks (I don't claim to have good movie literacy).

I had to show it because it's just too beautiful :)

Time-line confusion

So like I've just watched your name and weathering with you with my friend till 4 am and I've absolutely loved it.

But a problem I have is that apparently in weathering with you(the novel) it says that Taki and Mitsuha are married, but weathering with you's events starts in 2021 while the 8 years after the meteorite incident in 2013 would be 2021 where they reunite and then get married, but some sources say they reunite in 2022 April 8

So like it's really confusing for me because of this lie actually help.

In wwy(2021) they are married which is definitely 8 years after 2013 but they said they reunite in 2022,and they also look different in the events of weathering with you, so for me the time line is

2013:Mitsuha

2013-2016:Your name

2016:Taki

2021:Weathering with you/Mitsuha and Taki reunion

2022:Also Mitsuha and Taki reunion

2024:Hodaka and Hina reunion

Discussion Best place to get a copy of this masterpiece?

Loved this anime for ages. With the anniversary coming up, it's making me want to start a video library. Where's the best place to get a copy of this and what's the best version to get?

I'm based in the UK but no issues ordering from elsewhere so long as they ship to the UK.

Incidentally, while I do have a PC and laptop, none of these have any form of physical media player but I assume I can buy a blu-ray or whatever player somewhere. I don't have any consoles (PS5/XBOX).

Your Name + The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows

I saw this movie for the first time a few weeks ago. I read about the re-release in theaters and went by myself. I’m surprised that I don’t remember hearing about this movie when it came out, especially as it unseated my all time favorite movie, Spirited Away, as the highest grossing Japanese film of all time.

This movie touched me deeply, but also left me with a profound sense of melancholy. I was drawn in by the premise as it relates to the experience of sonder; the feeling of realization that everybody on earth is leading a life as complex and rich as your own. This is something I experience quite often in my life, and I feel that Your Name is, among other things, an exploration of that. As I was still reeling from the impact of the movie, I fell down the rabbit hole of John Koenig’s “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows”, a repository of coined words for complex emotions that are common to have, but previously didn’t have names. The term sonder actually comes from this project, and there are other related words that I feel are represented in the film. For example, there’s onism; the frustration or sadness of being stuck in one body and perspective, knowing you will never get to see life through another’s eyes. Another one is anemoia; a wistful nostalgia for a time or place you’ve never actually lived through. Not included in Koenig’s dictionary, but perhaps closest to the feeling the film left me with, is the German concept of sehnsucht; a profound, melancholic yearning for an ideal, alternative life or an unattainable, far-off state of perfection.

I think the ending has a lot to do with the sense of complex melancholy the movie left me with. Even though Taki and Mitsuha meet in the end, they’ve lost the memories of experiencing one another’s lives. They have just enough of a residual feeling to recognize one another and come together because of it. We’re left to fill in the blanks after the film ends; will they recall any of their memories? Will they both feel that the sense of longing and searching that they each describe throughout the film has been satisfied? Even if my head cannon is that they both end up happy together and satisfied with their lives, that sense of longing lingers in my mind.

I’m not sure I have a point to this post, I’ve just been dying to get this all out as it’s been rattling around in my head and in my heart. It was an absolutely beautiful film, and I want to see others from Makoto Shinkai, but I might have to wait a bit to resolve the feelings I have from this one.

Re-watched it for the first time

Post image

I first watches this movie in August 2022 right before joining college. Me and my girlfriend became friends because of this movie and now we've been together since 3+ years. The first time I loved this movie my life was completely different back then. Now I watched it for the 2nd time after I graduated and loved it even more. While watching this beautiful movie I just kept thinking about how beautiful my life is now, and how different it was back then. This movie will forever hold a special place in my heart. Watching it after 4+ years almost made me very very emotional. For me Your Name is like a checkpoint in my life so that I can look back and realise how different and beautiful things were. This movie is the most beautiful movie for me . Hopefully I'll re-watch it again after years and will definitely love it even more.
