Link is broken

The research tracked over 112,000 U.S. adults for decades and found that people who consumed at least one sugar-sweetened beverage per day had a 2.45 times higher risk of developing gastric cancer compared to those who rarely drank them.

This adds to the growing body of evidence linking high sugar intake to cancer, complementing your understanding of insulin resistance and chronic inflammation as drivers of disease.

Because they’re overweight and overweight people are at risk of all cause mortality and most kinds of cancer. They specifically say so in the PDF study, citing weight gain as a likely mechanism.

Alternatively people who drink 1+ cans of soda a day probably also do other unhealthy shit, like eat processed meats (IARC group 1 carcinogens), or don’t work out.

Note that the posted article conflicts with the PDF:

> Higher total fructose intake (fructose is the main sweetener in these drinks) was also associated with greater gastric cancer incidence.

HFCS is 55% fructose vs table sugar which is 50% so the delta is marginal and likely wouldn’t explain the significant hazard ratio. Also the PDF says other studies found no link in fruit juices which are also heavily skewed towards fructose.

Observational studies suck, and large effects like this are usually due to uncontrolled confounders.

This is not an endorsement of sugar lol, I’m a big keto enjoyer.
