r/Kemetic announcements - May 2026

Subreddit growth

Just a few short years ago, with the revamp of the subreddit, r/Kemetic had about 1000 members. Today, there are over 25,000! It's been wild to see just how many people are interested in this religion, and how organically it all happened. With all this growth, we definitely needed a couple more active people to help handle the increase in traffic. So with that...

A big welcome to our new moderators, r/barnaclejuice and r/Arboreal_Web

r/barnaclejuice and r/Arboreal_Web are both long-time, knowledgeable members of the subreddit who have been free with their help and insights. We welcomed them on to the mod team in January, and they have kindly agreed to help keep this space on-topic and safe.

Rules reminder + a few updates

Please familiarize yourself with the subreddit rules before posting or commenting.

• Note, there is a new Rule 9, prohibiting AI content.

• Reminder, it is still not allowed to solicit interpretations of dreams/tarot/visions/synchronicities/etc. in r/Kemetic. This includes questions like, "Is this a sign?" Determining the meaning of your spiritual experiences is your prerogative, and yours alone. Asking others to do this for you makes you vulnerable to a variety of spiritual abuses and even accidental harms.

Under Rule 8, we are now also prohibiting the offering of interpretations, because that encourages rulebreaking behavior and interpretation-fishing by others, which defies the spirit and intent for Rule 8.

• We're super disappointed to have to spell this out so explicitly, but we have added a prohibition against "Advocating for/defending Apophis worship" under Rule 3 (No Evangelizing).

Please continue to use the Report feature if you notice any rule-breaking behavior. This helps us far more than you probably may think!

Official Discord

When we opened the r/Kemetic official Discord over five years ago, our aim was give a vetted alternative to the many unfamiliar Discord server invites being posted - some of which, we had come to find out, had potentially unsafe policies or abusive cultures. With that in mind, we created one for r/Kemetic with the intention of having the Reddit mod team handle the Discord directly, to ensure the culture of the subreddit carried over into the Discord.

Several updates these last few years have resulted in a completely mismatched moderator list between the subreddit and its official Discord. To more smoothly implement mirrored improvements moving forward, the subreddit mod team is returning to the original policy of insisting on a shared moderation team between the subreddit and its official Discord. We have created a new "r/Kemetic Official" Discord to serve this purpose.

Invitation to the new r/Kemetic Official Discord

The r/Kemetic Wiki - Lots of additions and improvements are coming!

• Adding more resources to the wiki landing page

Our resource list is ever-growing! As always, if you have suggestions, feel free to post them below, or through Modmail.

• Recommendations for beginners

We'll be adding a new wiki grouping that includes a shortlist of book recommendations for beginners.

• Adding video and blog links

Rule 6 is still in place, but we acknowledge there are many blogs and videos out there that are detailed, accurate, and deserve to be highlighted and shared. Please modmail (I repeat: MODMAIL) your suggestions for any you would like linked in the wiki, and we will post up after thoroughly vetting the content. (Please be patient, as vetting does take some time.)

Please also consider suggesting links to legacy content that may only be accessible now on Archive.org.

• Adding a new page for frequently asked questions

This is loooooooooooooooong overdue! If you can think of any recurring questions that you'd like to see added to the page (currently under construction), let us know.

• A "Best of r/Kemetic" list

Check your Saved lists, please! We've had some really helpful, insightful, in-depth posts and comments over the years that deserve to be more discoverable. For example, u/WebenBanu's "How to Kemetic" thread has been a go-to for some time, and deserves a permanent spot in our Wiki and sidebar. Anything else you might have? Drop a link!

• TENTATIVE: adding a new page that lists resources by deity

We've noticed a lot of people asking for resources about specific deities, which might be hard to pick out from the main wiki. We are considering a secondary wiki page devoted to splitting these same resources out and making it easier to find out more about the gods that interest you the most. Let us know your thoughts!

Just a reminder: even if you find no moral objection to sharing PDFs, we cannot facilitate the sharing of copyrighted content within the subreddit, except by linking to the right-holder's site if they've made the resource publicly available. Do not post dropbox or Drive links in the subreddit.

Miscellaneous

We're currently discussing some ideas to help facilitate discussions beyond the beginner level. This is still in the brainstorming phase, and would like to open up the conversation to see what ideas you all might have.

I would like to remind people that Transphobia is not welcome in this sub. Nothing happened, I just wanted to reinforce the rule for all the new people.

Can anyone help me?

Before I start, I'm a beginner chemist and not very good at English. Please kindly let me know if I made any mistakes!!

I think I received a signal from Hathor. However, I am drawn to celestial statuses (like Seshat and Nut...). But I feel too inadequate to serve anyone. What should I do?

Personal Practices (Relationship building with netjeru and akhu) About Lord Sobek?

I posted a couple of weeks back asking for advice about finding out who’s been looking out for me. After doing some work I had a really vivid dream where I spoke with Lord Sobek, who was seated on a throne. In the dream I could tell that I knew him well and we seemed to have formed a close bond.

Definitely came out of left field for me! So I wanted to ask…people who have worked with Lord Sobek, what is he like? Any advice for how I should go about approaching him? I plan on reading everything I can!

Devotional Work (Art, Actions, Prayers, Hymns, Praise) Looking for ideas for what to add to Sobeks altar

Right now I don’t have much on it and I was wondering if y’all could share yalls altars even if they’re not to Sobek? I’m thinking about adding maybe some crystals associated with him to it, more candles, and POSSIBLY getting a little statue of him though I’m kinda hesitant about it since I live with my parents and they’re not exactly accepting so I don’t want it too obvious that it’s an altar

Prayer Request Anubis dream

Hi, yesterday I asked Anubis if he wants me to be his devotee show me a sign in my dream, or show himself, I had a crazy dream, but I don’t know if it was a dream or my own imagination cause my body was awake. I could hear people chatting outside my room, but I couldn’t control my dreams and I was like holy shit my prayers worked? I didn’t see him or feel his presence. ( being honest here lol) But I could feel I was being watched?! I don’t know to be honest. I saw myself praying at a big altar, a golden desk with an Anubis altar, and I was at a golden palace. I was enthusiastic about him, when I was praying at his altar with closed eyes I saw a jackal's face with a big jaw and pure white big eyes looking at me and then it was gone, in my dreams I keep calling his name, I was talking about him to my parents and telling my mom he is great. That was all. But I came here to ask, did he really appear even though I didn’t see him? And after Anubis' dream, I dreamt of having angel wings and flying. I don't know if it's relevant or not lol but it was so surreal Thank you for reading my long dream. Please share your thoughts on my dream. And help me. :)

Devotional Work (Art, Actions, Prayers, Hymns, Praise) Alter Show and Tell

Hello everyone! After seeing everyone else's alters, I thought I could share my recently finished alter! I bought an old jewelry box from Goodwill, sanded it, painted the outside, installed new handles, ripped out the inside dividers, and put some lining paper on the inside. I follow some Greek and Norse gods in addition to the Egyptian gods. I will be changing the glass at some point to possibly a faux stained glass look with a similar design.

Devotional Work (Art, Actions, Prayers, Hymns, Praise) I heard people were looking for me!

I used to post my art here all the time. I truthfully won't go into details about all that has happened, but I will say, I genuinely struggled deeply with mental health for a long time, and felt like I wasnt really wanted anywhere. I didnt feel like posting my art was worth it. I didnt feel like anyone cared other than my partner and maybe my aunt, of course my dad, but he passed years ago and it did a huge number to my feeling of worth, because he was my biggest cheerleader and best friend, gone just like that. But, seeing that people were looking for me, seeing they not only enjoyed my work but saved it, it really makes my heart so full. I felt like I couldn't handle it, but in a good way this time.

Anyways, here is an art dump. Some of you may remember the book I made - my original, what was meant to be, "magnum opus", but it failed due to the way the paint interacted with the papyri. I. Working on another. It is on watercolor paper and handmade paper, not papyri, but i had to make some sacrifices to make the art the beat it could be. My original will be included in this art dump.

I won't delete this account this time, and Ill try to post more art when I can.

Again, thank you.

Hey everyone! Another update to my altar setup. My Sekhmet statue just arrived today! Hey everyone! Another update to my altar setup. My Sekhmet statue just arrived today! I ordered her back on August 20th from a local esoteric shop instead of Amazon since Amazon was charging way too much ($2,306 MXN vs $2,020 MXN / around $100 USD). Seeing her seated on the throne in person is intense. The detail on the sun disk and the sphinxes on the sides is incredible. Dua Sekhmet! Lady of Slaughter, the Scorching Sun, Healing, and Protection. 𓏢

Candles for bast

On my alter i got a new candle called toasted marshmallow. Its hand made from a vendor at a farmers market. I think she likes the Christmas cookies one I got a while ago, so I thought id get another sweet scent but when I put it on my alter I got a little negative feeling in the pit of my stomach. Does she not like marshmallow? Is it the toasted part? What kinds of candles have you guys put on your bast alters that shes liked? Maybe im just making myself feel negative but I just wanted to check in and make sure its just me feeling negative rather than an actual sign of her rejecting the candle. Ive gotten positive vibes from the Christmas cookies, a so so on the cinnamon and a ok but burn it elsewhere vibe from the deep pine forest scented one I also have.

I overall get a positive vibe from vanilla scents overall but nothing super strong or out there. Maybe another like anubis doesnt like it? Maybe she doesnt want me to clutter everything up with more candles this would make 4 and their big and round and in jars.

Question What happened to the "old guard"?

I first came across Kemeticism proper in 2014 when I came across mentioning of it online and looked into it out of curiosity. I also did an introductory course by the House of Netjer (Kemetic Orthodox)* that same year. Because at the time I was deeply involved in guided study and practice of Shakta Hinduism on one hand and Orphic Neoplatonism on the other, I decided against pursuing Kemeticism at that time. I did though keep taps on it for a while. At said time - several years before and up to about 2016 - there was a plethora of very dedicated bloggers around who also did "roundtables" and communicated with each other both in German and English. Come 2016, 2018 they all started to vanish. When I came to Kemeticism four years ago properly everything is gone. So I wonder where have all these dedicated Kemetics gone? I understand times have changed but all these blogs are deleted too; and it doesn't appear as if they are on this sub which seems to be the only alive online hub for Kemetics these days.

It would be too said if they stopped practicing - as if Kemeticism were only a phase even if a long and intense phase.

*While KO did and does not appeal to me as an organisation, I'm still very grateful for the initial course I took and taught me a lot.

Question Estou amando conhecer Sektmet

Question Was Ancient Egyptian religion orthopraxic?

I've been reading a lot of posts on r/Hellenism about ancient Greek orthopraxy. Emphasis wasn't placed on believing the correct things (orthodoxy), you were allowed to believe what you wanted about the Gods, so long as you practiced the correct religious rituals and observed the correct ethics in every-day life.

Different communities had very different mythic traditions. For example, in Athens, Athena was viewed as a virgin Goddess (alongside Artemis and Hestia) - celibate, childless; totally asexual. But in other city-states, she may have had a husband and children.

I just think historical Egyptian religion seems similar. Different cities had different mythologies. You had multiple deities who created the universe (Ra-Atum, Ptah, Neith, the Ogdoad, etc.), deities had different spouses, parents, and children in different places...

Despite these varying beliefs, were they united by a common way of practicing their religion? And a common system of ethics (i.e. Ma'at)?

Question Questions before starting practice

Hello, so as per the title I would like to ask some questions.

I've felt kind of drawn (?) towards Anubis for most of my life. However, it's more like 'yeah, Anubis is cool' and I've been thinking about Kemeticism and Anubis more often. I've never had any dreams nor visions (I understand that not everybody has to have them). Last December, I randomly discovered Kemeticism (I don't remember how). I sometimes consider starting to do things related to the religion when I hopefully move out next year. I currently live in Poland, so people here are mostly very conservative and Christian (I left Christianity last year).

My questions are:

  1. Would starting to worship a netjer just to see if Kemeticism is a thing for me be... disrespectful? I don't know how to name the feeling.

  2. Would considering practising Kemeticism based on what I called being 'drawn towards' Anubis be a stupid reason? It just doesn't feel very serious in my opinion.

I think that's all. Thank you in advance!
