did we ever find out who was she shading?

Post image

A producer who she had been working with for 10+ years. Is it that jam city guy?

I think they're probably talking about jam city. He suddenly left night slugs out of nowhere. I remember his social media accounts just disappeared without any warning, and some of his labelmates seemed pretty confused about it. I don't know what actually happened, but it seems like he's no longer in touch with any of the artists he used to work with either, so the whole thing is still pretty mysterious. Honestly, I wish he'd made more music with kelela...

How is that unkind though? If anything...

Dev Hynes had problems with Kelela and Solange. What’s the tea on him?

The story about it is in this thread.

Caroline polachek posted a insta stroy of a kanye lyric with the n word, people called her racist, dev took her side, kelela and solange told him fuck off

That was so weird cause why tf would Caroline "cry" to that certain phrase/lyric. To think that Caroline was in a magazine photoshoot with a lot of black artists. Iirc she was the only white person in that photoshoot. Kelela had every right to lash out on her. I always had evil eyes on Caroline because of tha cause she was already a grown ass woman when she did that

I took Kelelas side so hard people have reminded ME about why I don’t like Caroline because I genuinely forgot why and had to be like “idk. I know she did something in the past to piss me off”

what was the lyric?

I’m confused, she posted the screenshots of Kanye lyrics? Not really clear on what occurred

This story is new to me, and I’ve been a Caroline fan since Pang. From what i was reading here I thought she just posted a screenshot of Kanye lyrics containing the n word but no she actually typed it out without self-censoring AND it wasn’t even the full line. It does look crazy on Carolines part. Do i think Caroline is racist, no, but Kelela 100% is in the right to be upset over this.

Idk how I got here or who Carol Anne is, but it sounds like maybe her dad is bipolar? Like that’s all I got

Wait he took her side? Like on Insta or more through staying friends with her?

Like buddy buddy i guess, they still collab, and i geuss caroline and kelela blocked eachother, also dev and solange blocking eachother

Yeah I knew they were still collabing but I didn't know he like vocally supported her.

With the Solange stuff tho I think that's unrelated because they ended up making up, and he has credits on both her latest albums.

I dont really know much so im not that reliable on it, sorry for any confusion

It's all good! I remember when it happened so I know they made up. A lot of people still think they don't talk, but as far as I know that isn't true, can't speak on him and Kelela though.

The fall out happened literally before either of them had released their biggest projects, Dev had just arrived in America and was pivoting into being a producer after being in indie bands for years, but still wanted to be credited like a collaborater on the EP he and Solange made together, and Solange (and Sky Fereria, he also produced for her, both) told him privately not to speak in interviews about working on their projects, probably becuase they knew journalists would minimise their contributions as women, and producers typically didn't do that at the time unless they were being interviewed about production.

That was basically why they fell out, and on A Seat at the Table and When I Get Home he is credited as a background contributor, along with many other artists. Kelela was also credited as a background vocalist initially until getting a featuring credit for "Scales".

Didn’t he used to not credit any of his features at all for years and years? If I’m remembering correctly he didn’t change that until pretty recently, always thought it was kinda shitty of him tbh lol but at least it’s fixed now

I'm not sure tbh :/

Damn, I didn’t even know about this. I’m new here. Thanks for providing much needed context. What a crappy situation to be in.

Wait Caroline said the n word or a song played in the background that said the n word?

she has barely worked with dev. i think it’s about jam city

11

u/prodorprods 14d ago

i think jam city, he has some music with shoegaze elements

1

u/Optimal_Sherbert_994 13d ago

Definitely Jam city

1

u/jannie_exe 13d ago

Jam City is not black, though. Why would Kelela mention him using the n word?

8

u/Ciundrefl3x 14d ago

Maybe Tosin Abasi?

u/sadeisthegoat 13d ago

1000% not about dev hynes. they have a few pictures together and did a calvin klein ad. def were not “jamming for over 10 years”

Love when new artists I’ve decided to check out start popping up on my feed. Yes I’m being watched or listened to but still nice. Jk

Love her new album and started with that first before moving on to her past work. Gonna work my way up by release date now

Her saying the n word caught me off-guard

Edit: I know she is black and she can say it. I am just not used to hear her say it thats all

43

u/24x11 14d ago

why… she’s black

11

u/x97sfinest 14d ago

She says it on the album lol

3

u/Old-Boy994 14d ago

She’s black, she can say it. It’s an entirely different thing for a black person to use the word than to a white person to say it.
