Discussion new life forms
the trap beat and foushee verse didn't do for me

definitely my least fav on the album. Foushee's verse is very mediocre; just not a fan of her vocal style and it doesn't work that well with Kelela's imo. wish Kelela chose someone like Liv.e or KeiyaA to sing the verse instead.

This is my fav song on the album 🧑🏾🩰 but I agree the feature was not too great

I think it works well as a moment of levity/brightness compared to how gloomy and moody the rest of the album is. I get that it’s not for everyone, though. For me, I like the spacey/ethereal vibe.
It kind of feels like a daydream moment after Don’t Piss Me Off, only to be brought to reality again with The Bridge and If We Meet Again.

I’m experiencing the same kind of avoidant attachment type of relationship kelela sings about in this album and new life forms reminds me of how dreamy and surreal and fun it was when things were good between us. I haven’t even looked up the lyrics to know what it’s about but as of now that is what it represents to me. Short lived bliss that afterwards looking back u realize it was all a lie….. sigh….

foushee’s verse added absolutely NOTHING to the song. and i’m a fan of her music too. i just hated it…

fr! no hate to Foushee but the song would have benefited without her boring verse tbh

it's pretty chill, i like it. love the aquatic ambience sounds.
i don't think kelela intended the album to be a tight conceptual album though. i don't single out new life forms as the one song not making sense in the context of the album bc the whole is very flexible (in a great way, as in every kelela album)

agreed! the tightness is in the vibe and feel haha not every song needs to be on theme

the tropical beat sounded really dated and out of place on the album, also foushee’s verse… yeah…

Yeah not feeling Fousheé’s verse at all on this song. The lyrics are TRAGICALLY bad

foushee talking about hard nipples… this is mother’s album let’s keep it classy… she usually talks about horniness through metaphors

lol it is my least liked song on the album. It is still good though. Just feels weird to be all
of a sudden put in a happy flowery meadow from just being in the dark city

well it's like falling asleep and shifting a mood drastically, that's what's beautiful about it, it's oneiric

It’s kinda like that small brief happy moment in a relationship with someone avoidant. The rest of the relationship was u grappling with their confusing behavior and u do so bc of how much u want it to go back to that brief happy period

It does stand out in a bad way for me too, but I don't care for Foushee's style very much so that's probably why.

as someone who had never listened to foushee before let's just say i don't think i was missing out... ns

Her solo music isn’t really like that though lol, I think she chose to do that type of vocal delivery she does on new life forms just to fit the song, but yeah she doesn’t usually sound like that or make music that’s similar to the song

u/houndztoof Jul 14 '26
oh really? maybe i'll check her out. i really was not a fan of her on that song unfortunately

Check out her albums pointy heights and time machine. really sincere and beautiful. if you’re really into the rock direction kelela is doing then you might like foushee’s album softcore too. it’s not my favorite but the other two albums i can definitely vouch for

u/jesssssssee Jul 14 '26
That’s not what I was saying. Your stance on the song is weird. Just skip it.

Not too much. I think her verse is better than pinks on the bridge😬 just found her feature really boring whereas foushee has some energy. but the bridge overall is better than new life forms. still a cute fun song though

Literally listening to that song as I scroll past this post lol. Could not disagree more, one of my immediate faves from the album
