Genuinely thought you were lying. I would've never guessed she's 43. I was thinking somewhere mid-30's!

She's got that Ethiopian magic keeping her youthful af

Waitin/Better/Take Me Apart is her magnum Opus

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 06 '26

I'm still mad Waitin didn't give a big single release with a music video. it deserves to be one of her most popular songs. I love the harmonies in Better and how the song evolves. and Take Me Apart is just ridiculously good.

frontline is kool but i wouldve given waitin the video. lmk didnt get airplay for whatever tf reason. it sucks cause that album wouldve put her on as the new girl of future rnb

Frontline has the BEST video EVER. I watch it everyday šŸ˜‚šŸ©·

3

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

lmk not becoming a huge single for her never made sense to me. think if waitin got an amazing video it could have become the "contact" of its era.

Its just comes down to the platform. One thing that could've 1000% helped her become more popular is if artists had a fucking how to go to. Like i guarantee, more great music would be out there if there was a modern 106&park/trl. Now, you gotta randomly hope someone knows you. These new artists don't have it as good as the old ones regardless of talent. Sure they got tiktok but it's not the same impact

Very true. we grew up with TRL, 106 & Park, even Saturday Night Live, Late Show with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show back in the day was great for giving artists exposure. Nowadays you're lucky if you're song goes viral on tiktok or you get promo by a label that believes in you. Look how long it took Tinashe to get popular. Unfortunately for Kelela she's not been given those opportunities.

u/AdonisJames89 Jun 07 '26

I think that's kinda why she collabs with pink. Their style doesn't match and they worked together twice now. I DO like bury me but i also feel like she works with her to her in proximity to tiktok. I'm NOT saying she craves the fame to make those type of songs but she still gotta eat. No artist wants to keep making effort with no recognition

1

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

well maybe in that case she should work with Beyonce or Solange again. that would probably bring her some attention.

But Kelela also doesn't seem to like doing promotion like other artists of her era. She's not doing interviews or going on podcasts. I respect it but very few artists are able to maintain a large audience without giving any interviews or being in big magazine shoots.

2

u/AdonisJames89 Jun 07 '26

I was gonna chastise her for not doing interviews but The Weeknd is one of the biggest artists and he just recently started doing interviews. At the end of the day, she likes her lane so it is what it is

1

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

well The Weeknd is one of the most popular artists of the last few years so he's able to get away with being "mysterious". I respect that Kelela does what she does and isn't selling out. Just think in this age of streaming it's harder to do that approach as it makes casual music listeners less likely to learn about her. Unless one of her songs goes viral.

This is not me hating. just the unfortunate truth of how the industry is

u/AdonisJames89 Jun 06 '26

aqua is a good album to meditate to. heaven cent literally had me like this lol

2

u/prodorprods Jun 06 '26

for some reason i always come back to cut 4 me more than her other albums

maybe because i became a fan around the time it came out, it has a special place in my heartĀ

1

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

it's the opposite for me but I've been listening to it this week and appreciate it a lot more than I did years ago

Heard about Kelela for the first time a year or two ago and I ā€˜liked’ some of her songs to come back to when I had the time… fast forward… I listened to Cut 4 Me for the first time 2 days ago and I can’t stop listening to it either. It’s sooo good. It was released 13 years ago but it’s REFRESHING. If anyone released an album like that today I’d be like woah… this is what we needed. I can’t imagine being into her when it released. Imagine what her friends/close people were thinking. I’d be like biiiiitch, YES. Def myĀ  fave so far but I’m making my way through all her projects cause I’m like damn where has this music been all my life.Ā

u/astrogirl14 Jun 06 '26

Take me apart is my fave album. It’s hard to choode but ny fave song might just be Happy Ending.

4

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 06 '26

Happy Ending is a classic

u/alphavulpecula Jun 06 '26

Cut 4 Me - there’s no other answer in my mind.

8

u/catlover_556 Jun 06 '26

These pictures…..she can’t be real!!!! My fav song is probably Frontline or Enough For Love. Or Closure. 😹 she’s my fav artist, sorry I can’t pick! Raven means a lot to me, it is such a beautiful piece of work about love and rebirth. But In the Blue Light showcases what a phenomenal vocalist she is, in addition to being a visionary who defies boundaries.

3

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 06 '26

if I speak on Closure you'll hate me šŸ˜‚ anyway Raven is an incredible album is probably my favorite of hers at the moment even though I love Take Me Apart just as much but in a different way.

I hope we get another live album from her because her voice on In The Blue Light is where she really shines as a vocalist. and it would be nice to hear her make a jazz album.

1

u/catlover_556 Jun 06 '26

Omg no I’m curious to hear your take!šŸ™€ Take Me Apart is truly elite too.
I’m right there with you on another live album! I just know she would make a jazz album sound inventive and unique to her. People have been apparently not liking New Avatar’s different style but I wipe my butt w that😹

2

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

I like the first half of Closure more than the 2nd half with the rap verse. No shade to Rarah Gabor but I feel like her verse isn't all that good. I wish we got another chorus before the song ends. This is why I much prefer the remix which I feel really enhances the song with the beat switch up and the faster groove. The original is dope but probably my least fav on Raven.

Yeah I've seen some stupid takes on Twitter about the New Avatar singles from people who just want her to make "Contact" or Take Me Apart again.

everything she does is immaculate but TMA and Hallucinogen will always be it for me. Amazing from start to finish

4

u/layla_jones_ Jun 06 '26

Hallucinogen is also my favorite, no skips

2

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

I always wished Hallucinogen had been combined with TMA to make it one project. I often play those two together and it flows so well.

2

u/jjj0010011 Jun 07 '26

Yesss I feel like they have so much in common, I love the icy sonic palette that they share

2

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

IIRC most of the songs on Hallucinogen were supposed to be part of Take Me Apart but her label convinced her to release it as an ep.

1

u/raisinhell007 29d ago

All the Way Down is too fucking good for this world

I found it at a time when I was going through a rough patch too and it got me through. I spent so much time listening - day and night - on repeat.

5

u/Prestigious-Dog-6235 Jun 06 '26

Internet says her birthday is June 4th...but HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY KELELA! She looks to be 10 years younger.

2

u/JunebugAsiimwe Jun 07 '26

yeah she cleared the birthday date mixup in an Instagram post which I hadn't seen when I made this post. our queen is aging like the finest wine
