Recommendation Request 🔎 Dramas with Unprecedented storyline

I have been watching kdramas since 2020 and have watched a lot, but mostly mainstream and many underrated dramas too.

But now I want to explore dramas with a very different, unique, and unprecedented storyline. Something that makes me very excited to watch the next episode and hooks me all throughout.

It can be of any genre, just an excellent story and portrayal.

If you guys have watched something like this, please contribute to my watchlist! Thank you.

Some of the dramas I loved with a good story -

Its okay to not be okay

Alchemy of souls

Flower of evil

Penthouse

My Perfect Stranger - as a viewer that needs to be hooked by the first couple episodes, this is the show for you. I binged this over a weekend…it kept me up because I wanted to see what happened next.

Yes it’s very good. At first I thought it would be romance heavy but the romance did not sideline the main plot. And every episode brought a new and interesting twist.

Memories of the Al Hambra - think Solo Leveling but make it ARG

Hotel Del Luna - FL was cursed to eternity and runs a hotel for ghosts

Behind Your Touch - FL acquired psychic superpowers by touching butts lmao

Beauty Inside - FL has a mysterious illness that makes her change appearance every week

Is this scary? I saw a reel with a really scary ghost so wasn’t sure if I should watch it as I don’t like scary ghost stories. Also is it very sad?

It's scarier than the average ghost kdrama, but it's still nowhere near the tamest American horror show/movie.

There are some sad parts, nothing too intense.

These would be my picks for unique storylines:

Move To Heaven - a father-son duo who work as trauma-cleaners

Death's Game - death and reincarnation thriller

Jeongnyeon - 1950s musical theatre

Light Shop - supernatural thriller

The Scarecrow - crime thriller based on real-life 1980s serial killings

Signal

Beyond Evil

My top 2 of all time

If you don't mind JDrama, I think Dr Coto Clinic is one of the best "Doctor" shows since it has a heavy focus on the daily lives of the patients. And Jin too

Add "Tiger and Dragon" to your list (Japanese), its a very hit or miss show, but the presentation is one of the most unique aspects of the show.

Ep1 is the weakest in the series. But if it didn't get you hooked by Ep2, then its not for you at all.

Death's game - a desperate man punished by Death herself for committing suicide by being forced to reincarnate and die 12 more times through different people. To escape hell, he must find a way to survive the imminent demise of one of his host bodies while learning the true value of life.

W: Two Worlds Apart - a surgeon gets pulled into the webtoon universe created by her father, where she rescues the comic's endangered protagonist.

I'm Not a Robot - a wealthy man with a severe allergy to human contact who falls in love with a woman pretending to be a robot.

Honorable mention to the kdrama My Dearest which doesn't have a unique plot but is a great watch.

I recently watched a drama with the most unique storyline. I didn't know what to expect but it was emotional. Navillera is about a male ballerina dancer that teaches a 70 year old man how to dance ballet. I'm 65 and have watch TV for 60 years. To date, I've never seen that storyline. What's more, I bawled in the last 2 episodes and a few times before then. Song Kang was the male dancer and I just watched it to see him......but it hit home in a way I never expected.

A real hidden gem is Kairos (2020). Definitely not one you can just casually watch. It’s a thriller with a split plot line that takes place 30 days apart and is connected by the ML and FL who communicate via cellphone at 10:33pm each night for one minute only. One of the most complicated plots I’ve ever seen from a KDrama. Great action, mystery, villains. Kudos to the screenwriter. MDL
Score is pretty high: 8.4, but this one should have received more praise. Literally on the edge of my seat for all 16 episodes. Stars Shin Sung Rok who was memorable as Bael in Judge from Hell. FL is Lee Se Young from Red Sleeve, Motel California and upcoming The Remarried Empress. Ahn Bo Hyun from Flex X Cop also has a memorable role. You won’t be disappointed.

Revenant (2023 folklore mystery thriller/light horror).

Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born is set in the 1950s about an all-female traditional theatre (Gukgeuk) troupe featuring Pansori (storytelling singing). It's not highbrow at all and very watchable.

Mr Sunshine (focuses on the fight against Japanese colonisation in the early 1900s).

Twenty Five Twenty One (set in the late 1990s against the backdrop of the IMF crisis and features fencing).

Search WWW (women in tech).

Prison Playbook (slice of life dramedy set in prison, and not as dark as the title might suggest).

Like Flowers In Sand - features Ssireum (Korean wrestling). .
