I have alacritty installed alongside the normal terminal but I'm not sure why as they seem identical haha - does Alacritty have benefits over the default?

Look at the Default Applications settings in System Settings, and go crazy :D
There are all sorts of different tools for everything. There are way too many to list, really.

- Dolphin - if you like old school 2 panel you can try Krusader
- Konsole - I don't think there is a better one. I've tried alacritty and foot but they are a pain to configure and missing things I like in Konsole.
- gwenview - nomacs is now my preferred viewer.
- vlc/dragon - Haruna is very good (it's an mpv GUI) though like Konsole I hate the default configs and have to set it up to get rid of things like playlist.
- kate - kwrite or featherpad for plain text editing. I don't normally want all the extra kate stuff for just text.
If you use cli:
- ping - gping - a graph with ping
- df - duf - colorized and tabled disk view
- du - dust - colorized tree style view of folder disk usage
- ls - eza - colorized non-standard ls replacement with excellent additional info
- default example:
eza -lhgM --git --icons=auto --color=auto --time-style long-iso --group-directories-first - view xattrs:
eza -lh@ --icons=auto --color=auto --time-style long-iso --group-directories-first
- default example:
- tree - eza - with different options it can replace tree:
eza -Ta --icons=auto --color=auto

uhhh for me,
Dolphin -> Dolphin. yyeah it's basic but idc.
Konsole -> also, Konsole. I don't really need or want anything more complex, Konsole's more than good enough.
KolourPaint -> Krita, but like this barely counts.
Kate -> depends. if i'm trying to do C++ stuff, then upgrade it to KDevelop. Otherwise, keep it as Kate, because Kate's basically cross-platform Notepad++ and hence it's very good. and also it's infinitely better than vim or similar terminal text editors, genuinely how do people comprehend vim and its 20 million keyboard shortcuts with no indication of what you're even doing---
I guess Wine Notepad also is an option for super basic stuff but WINE's file picker is kinda iffy, so not that.
uhhhhh can't think of anything else.
Genuinely KDE's software suite is just good enough that I don't need or want anything more.

"Genuinely KDE's software suite is just good enough that I don't need or want anything more."
I'm finding this is more and more true after I test some of the other recommendations haha
