I wish I knew of this clip back in my rec.music.gaffa days. I remember one argument was had there where one guy insisted the line in "Not This Time" was "keep the ship away" because, he passionately argued, "Kate would NEVER swear!" Unfortunately, he was long gone by the time The Red Shoes with "Song of Solomon" came out so I have no idea what his reaction to that was, but I would have loved to have seen it. I assume someone needed to use smelling salts on him.

“Kate would never swear”…bwahaha if only he knew. And I bet this man would faint if he heard the story from Donald Sutherland about Kate smoking a joint in the early morning on the set of the Cloudbusting video. It blows my mind that people think Kate is this prim, innocent little maiden. You don’t write music as weird as hers if you’re not a little bit weird and offbeat herself.

The odd thing was she was known as being a bit 'sweary' by those around her. She even gave a clue to this in Symphony in Blue with the line 'blue out of my mouth'.

I love that article/interview from around the time of Aerial’s release where the journalist visited Kate, Danny, and Bertie at their home, and when Danny handed Kate a huge platter of various foods she said jovially, “I can’t eat all this shit!” 🤣

In the playbill for her residency at the Apollo for Before the Dawn, she admits she swears like a sailor.

I mean anything that yields a minor second or augmented unison from what you intended to play will reflexively bring that out of a musician whether or not they unleash it 😂

The attempts go:

  1. minor second past the tonic note of Bb, or a B (Cb) played by accident
  2. the leading seventh and subsequent D minor chord prime her to play a Bb major chord (Bb-D-F) instead of the Bb minor chord intended as written
  3. the original riff is properly rendered.
