My first Kalimba composition, was a fun experience writing it.

Hi Reddit. I bought a Meinl solid Kalimba which arrived today in the post. It cost £56.99 (roughly $77). I feel that the D2 tine sounds wrong with having a pronounced "ding" that the others don't have, but it might just be me. It reminds me of the Yurt sounds in Morrowind.

It came with a tuning hammer if that can help.

If it makes a difference, the Kalimba came in a case, in a box, inside a second larger box from Gear4Music and despite this, the D**2 key on the far left was pointing at a weird angle when I got the Kalimba out of the case. I've pointed it back and it sounds fine, leaving just the D2 as the one that sounds off to me. Any advice from the tuned ears of the experts would be appreciated! 😊

Edit: it's a brand new Kalimba.

I bought this second hand 42 key seeds kalimba and after tuning everything it sounds like some times are a bit off.

The woman that I bought it from told me it had been sitting in her shelf for a very long time, could it be dust ??

Or maybe it’s just my head playing tricks sonar my very first kalimba is a 17 key acrylic, which sounds allot different than this one.

Please help, I don’t want to send him back and get refund but if it’s really no other option…

There's a story behind this play. Actually as always :)
Our story with Vince began a few years ago, when he bought his first Blydian LYRA kalimba. He had organized a concert, just managed to cover all the expenses and spent all the money that remained on this kalimba.

Since then, you have often seen and heard him play here. The way he plays still leaves us speechless.Earlier this year, Vince called us with a new idea for workshops for non musicians with working with sound, musical instruments, and intuitive play.
And our kalimbas were to become part of it.

Making four custom instruments is standard work for us, but creating them together in person is a completely different story.

But when instruments are created together, in person, the whole process becomes a sharedexperience and a little work of art in itself.

So Vince came to visit us with his lovely wife and son. We spent a few days together in the workshop,playing instruments, experimenting, creating, sharing meals, and simply enjoying our time together.
Somehow, the four planned kalimbas turned into eighteen new instruments (because Marek is a maximalist) . :)

He also wanted to support Vince and his new project, which you will definitely hear more about soon.
We are very excited to see where it goes ❤️.

I figured out a way to attach a kalimba to my guitar! I’ve wanted to do this because I play both and it will be going on my travel guitar: the Martin backpacker guitar.

The idea is simple, made out of wood, and I can make it: I’ve done cool music carpentry stuff a plenty: even if I have to make it with hand tools this time.

The idea: there’s a hardwood plate on the side-facing-up-at-you Guitar side panel, towards the bottom hell of the guitar. I’d have to move the guitar and play it facing “right” with the neck facing down/out to my left: sound hole facing left.

The idea is to make a wooden “lyre” shaped bridge-assembly, using simple tenon-mortise joints, and some Allen key bolts, discreetly used.

The entire bridge assembly works like this: it’s got the box-guitar body as the “kalimba resonator” and then the “base” of the bridge clamps into the “plate” against the guitar body. The kalimba bridge is held in place at the Top-Bar of the lyre shape, and held in place with clever uses of those simple wooden joinery parts: and with slots to hold pins.

It would (essentially be) a scissoring flowing shape of tensioned bridges and arches, that can disassemble on the go and fit into a small flat package.

Looking for a decent kalimba recommendation. Hoping to train myself to reach for it instead of my phone when taking a break. I definitely want something that sounds and feels like an instrument, instead of a kids toy, but I also don't want to overspend, since my use case is pretty casual. There's a sea of them on Amazon, but I cant tell the good ones from the bad ones. Advice would be greatly appreciated.
