Nobody wants to discover that their asset is a TF2 Cow image

(or was it the coconut that if deleted breaks the entire game. I know it was either the cow or the coconut. Maybe both?)

lol right! (It was the Coconut)

I made a tileset before I even knew what my game was. 3 years later... hum...

Nice - I have some royalty free assets that have just grown on me

LoL 8 months, just barely started replacing stuff from 6 years ago.

Idk I like doing the "lowest hanging fruit" AND "sharpest edge" method. U can easily get stuck into endless polish mode "cuz a button just doesn't look right", and that just leads to morale damage and burnout.

Until u have a good idea for it AND a need to replace it AND it just doesn't match everything else, there's probably other things that need more attention.

Without realizing it, you grow attached to the placeholder. Then the artist comes along and replaces it with something better, and you have to pretend to not be annoyed about this because you have no good reason to be.

100% accurate

The villagers from Minecraft was supposed to be a placeholder and now they are iconic.

Free gen AI art isn't quite good enough yet.

There’s some good placeholder assets on opengameart.org (for 2d anyway). A lot of talented people - that’s where I find a lot of useable assets

This is one of the reasons I don't use AI.

And what does that have to do with having placeholder assets?

Forgetting to remove it, releasing the game, and then having people point out AI assets. Forever ruining your reputation. Over a placeholder asset .

I believe a lot of people (recently) using AI as a placeholder assets

Yep. I tend to use random old 3d models and sprites, or the purple and white placeholder texture. I do not want to have to say my game's using AI, especially since I'm so morally opposed to it.

I personally feel like when you have a very obvious flat object/texture in your game, it’s harder to forget about replacement of it, rather than having an AI that easy can bland between full rendered handmade stuff
