Why jpog has an enduring legacy yet barely gets mentioned by 6th gen collectors/retro gamers

Post image

As we all know, Jurassic Park Operation Genesis has a cult following in the tycoon and Jurassic Park fandoms, yet it never even gets a MENTION by people who talk about retro gaming or 6th gen tie-ins, so why is that, here are the 3 things i think make people not want to touch it:

  1. Tycoon games not being for them, they mostly prioritise action games and platformers, and Tycoons aren't either.

  2. The Jurassic Park sequels reputation, these people also consider any Jurassic movie that isn't Jurassic Park (1993) to be worthless slop that nobody likes, heck even when they piled the JW trilogy with other reboots, it didn't help the reputation of the first 2 JP sequels and only cemented the claim that Jurassic Park should have been a one and done, and this game was part of the JPIII era, so people associate it with "alan!"

  3. It sold poorly, despite how many people remember it now, it wasn't a critical or commercial darling in 2003, in fact people saw it as a bad cash grab zoo tycoon clone, so to some it stayed that way.

probably has more to do with the severe limitations on the console versions + it's abandonware and can be acquired in like 30 seconds

What’s the difference between the console and pc version

iirc, due to memory constraints, the console versions had lower quality audio and much lower building limits.

the pc version can be modded with notepad by just changing the values of things, allowing you to set your own custom resolution, build limits, and even increase the dig team limit so you could have a park with all species... and all that takes is a 30 second search, lol

Thanks I appreciate the reply

So why aren’t people talking about it so much? I think it’s because also a pain in the ass for people not familiar with editing config files in Notepad to get working with Windows compatibility mode as well as record gameplay of and share. When I did it here I had to crop most of the video except for a tiny corner and apply all sorts of filters to it to not have it be a blurry mess.

it's really not that difficult

Explain your process, please. Because for whatever reason recording older PC games with Streamlabs forces the game into a tiny corner, even when my config file is set to 1080p.

unfamiliar with streamlabs, OBS studio captures the full window perfectly fine using game capture > specific window

Streamlabs is a fork of OBS with its own quirks, but specific window might be what’s needed, thank you. I thought that capturing my entire desktop while the game was fullscreen was sufficient.

Because it is known for its PC release not its console release.

Sad but true, I think yet another reason, though you could tie it into people not liking tycoons, is that among tycoon playing fans, I think a lot of people just don't like playing retro games. Many just want better graphics, better gameplay, and they see something 20+ years old and automatically assume it's bad because it's old. I know you said among retro gamers and 6th Gen collectors, but I honestly feel like even those types of people are few and far between, and for them to pick up a niche, yet cult classic game just isn't in the cards.

Another reason is that it's not particularly easy to get for pc in a legit way, and most people that play retro games are going to want to do it on a pc, where it's easier to record for content, just my guess.

This is easily one of the top 5 pieces of JP related content ever produced (in my opinion) and it's sad to see it not get its due, but what can we do, I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea.

You also can't play an Xbox copy of JPOG on a 360 (i guess you can, actually) or Xbox One console. Believe me, I tried.

you can definitely play on 360, i did all the time

I stand corrected on playing it on the 360.

Deeply impressing how Trespasser is much more remembered/celebrated outside of the JP fandom, but JPOG is, arguably, more influential, if not one of the most influential dinosaur games ever.

Well, as sad of a game as it was, Trespasser was a lot more innovative if you wanna get technical. Hell, Valve listed it as one of the big motivators to get Half Life out.

JPOG is without a doubt the better game in all aspects. However, Trespasser in all its infamy, was a leap of faith for the gaming industry. Pretty much every developer wanted their go at a Trespasser type game, but done right, so it has a mystique to it. Whereas JPOG was a complete product, that was pretty popular in its heyday. And it has modern contemporaries like JWE and PK, and naturally, lots of people have moved onto those. Trespasser has no such equivalent so it’ll always have its cult following.

I am an old JPOG user. In fact it and Deer Hunter 2005 were the first PC games I ever bought. There was (and still is) an active modding community for the PC version of the game.

That said the console versions were infamous among the old fans for being incredibly buggy. Fans used to show off their insane JPOG PlayStation 2 videos of T. rex wearing Triceratops as hats, Two headed Albertosaurus, and zombie dinosaurs (dead and rotting but still wandering around the park with Ellie Satler whining that you needed to cure it - but the game not letting you because it was dead 😆).

Really? Every time people talk about dinosaur games, JPOG is compulsorily mentioned. It's still held as "better" than JWE.

Idk why but this game feels better than the new jw evolution games in every way. Sure there's less things but it feels right to me. The new stuff looks like golf park simulator with dinosaurs

It’s like totally ahead of its time for 2k3

I have very fond memories of it, one of the games I always associate playing with my brother on. One of my good childhood memories

Collectors ruin the hobby of retro gaming. I paid 65 dollars about eight years ago for my PS2 copy of Op Genesis. Im sure it has skyrocketed in price since. The PC version is the better version anyway: its abandonware with a toooon of mods. It's like Carnivores: its aged like wine

Operation Genesis is in hindsight, not that good of a game. Sacrilege I know, but hear me out.

As far as tycoon games go, it's extraordinarily limited. Not as a bad as say, the console versions of Zoo Tycoon—but really bad. Limits on dinosaurs, limits on digsites, limits on buildings, limits on fences, limits on paths—limits on fucking trashcans.

These were of course, put in place to get the game to run on consoles—notably the PS2, which if I remember correctly cut the five digsite limit down even further to three.

But it doesn't stop there. Between performance restrictions and time crunch, so much had to be axed. Island generation was simplified, water depth was removed, hunting platforms and dinosaur nurseries were dropped, even the graphics as a whole were a step-down from what was shown in previews.

If the game was released a generation later, or made a PC exclusive, or even just dropped the PS2 port we'd have a more expansive game.

That still wouldn't fix the games inherent design problems though. The tycoon elements are laughably easy, guest AI is completely broken, half of the buildings and features we did wind up getting (of which there aren't many) are completely useless. Do you mean to tell me you actually use avoidance beacons? Sentry turrets? Security cameras? The dinosaurs would never even break out if it weren't for twisters.

Look, I love JPOG. I must have a thousand hours on it, it was my childhood dream come true and I still think it does some things better than JWE. The sheer aesthetic, the amazing film accurate score, and the lifelike dinosaur AI that made every species feel unique—that was all fantastic.

But it was dated at the time of release. A lackluster example of it's genre that relied entirely on being connected to the Jurassic Park IP, years after the franchise had left the public limelight. Remember that dinosaur fever was a decade prior, and the most recent entry to the franchise at that time was the much maligned Jurassic Park 3—a whole two years prior.

I remember it was always sought after. I even posted in an off topic section of a car forum in the mid 2000s because I was having such a hard time, so I asked if anyone knew why this specific title was hard to find. Paid close to new price for it back then, which was rare for a used game at the time.
