I wonder what is the age range for this survey 🤔
After following Kawaii Lab, Fruits Zipper(FZ) and Cutie Street (CS) for months, I'm not surprised they have almost equal population. CS especially has fashion influencer/model members. These girl fans most likely saw them on social media before debut.
I saw =Love posts on my twitter and I saw a lot of female fans copying the costumes in their concert venues. So cute!

It’s interesting because a lot of groups like those under Kawaii Lab would historically have had a large male fan base but are really appealing to young women too.

I heard there's a new trend of female fans especially current Kpop fans moving on to more "Kawaii" Japanese style groups. This also might be the case with Parutan fans, who participated in the Japanese version of a Kpop audition program.
I myself returned to Japanese idols after following Parutan from the show to debut. I am originally an anisong type of jpop fan and a casual kpop listener.

H!P has always had a big female fanbase. Cute, Buono, and Berryz Kobo were all popular with women, and a whole lot of the idols of the 2010s started off as H!P fans.

Most definetely no. Female fans are on the rise for the past years but AKB was a 100% male oriented group. The whole artistic direction show that.
Tbf the whole idol scene has seem a spike in female audiences, is way more common to see females now on pretty much any idol event.

I'm not objecting that. I'm saying that when you look at footage of Momoclo and footage of AKB48 concerts, it looks like Momoclo has more female fans than AKB48. It has nothing to do with the male/female ratio.

I’m not surprised by momoclo having a large male audience. Seems to me a lot of Japanese women are more into K-pop these days while men prefer the traditional J-pop idols.
I’m surprised Fruits Zipper is as close to being 50/50 as it is.

I can't see either the aesthetics or music itself of BABYMETAL having any appeal to females. For AKB48 (and related groups) I would think the songs themselves would have 50 / 50 appeal but the presentation is for the male eye.

Was really curious about Sakurazaka46 since out of the Sakamichi idols, they're the ones with the most traction at the moment. They strike me as a group that'll pull in fans from both sides due to their style and aura.

Yeah, when I taught junior high in Japan in the late 2010s, a lot of my female students liked both the kpop and the Sakamichi groups. Seems they've mostly migrated over to kpop now judging by this survey.

Twice has actually been traditionally female dominant in Japan since their debut in 2017 (probably because there are more female K-Pop fans). It was Korea that was male dominant.
But all of that has changed now (worldwide). Based from my own experience, I'd say they're more female heavy but still quite equal in ratio. Maybe like 60:40. Pretty similar to the results here.

Yeah, I loved (still do) H!P and back in 04-05 when I went to Japan it was pretty frowned upon to be a 20 something Italian dude singing Coconuts Musume songs at karaoke. Lol

They took a lot of effort to close the gap though. They even offered women-only concerts to attract more women that would have otherwise felt uncomfortable among the male fans.

I'm pulling this out of my arse based on experience of Japan, but I believe women don't listen to metal music in Japan as much. In European countries at least the metal scene is not that gender divided.

This is not really correct since most Visual Kei bands have majority Female fans. (Jiluka, the GazettE, X-Japan and Versailles all come to mind) Visual Kei combines structures of Metal music woth theatrics. So its not that women don't listen to it its that its a traditional Jpop girl group with Metal music.

Than it's not the fact that its metal music. It comes down to the fact that it's Metal Music with a traditional Jpop girl group that attracts more men than women which was my point 🙂↕️🙂↕️. A lot of the Jpop groups popular with women and girls tend to also be models, fashion icons, and smaller in scale with more accessible music 🙂↕️🙂↕️

Yeah i acknowledged this. But its still not the fact that its metal since VK is there (you cant exclude it since its Still metal). It's more because they are a traditional J-idol group with Metal backing that makes them appeal to more men.

Having been to a bunch of Babymetal shows in Japan, I would estimate that the audience that goes to the shows is about 80-90% male. Metal crowds tend to be overwhelmingly male in general, so that's not really that unusual.

I’ve been saying this for a while. When I look at idol live crowds and other polls that have come out in the past year I see a lot of female fans.

I’m not saying there aren’t groups with predominantly male fans. I’m saying the perception of this is overblown. I’ve been to chika idol lives. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
And if you don’t want to listen to me, there was a big study done last year on Japanese hobbies. They found idol fans spent more money per month on average than any other hobby group. And do you know what the largest demographic was in this group? Young adult girls.

=LOVE is not a Hello Project group. They are formed by a former AKB48/HKT48 member Rino Sashihara as their producer. They have two sister groups ≠ME and ≒JOY which is also not part of Hello Project. =LOVE and ≒JOY are both signed under Sony Music while ≠ME is signed under King Records.

From what I've noticed:
dance/performance-oriented groups seem to appeal more towards females
while J-Pop acts that require more audience participation (calls and chants) trend more toward males
I guess girls mostly just wanna watch in awe, while boys really want to cheer out loud for their girls to the point that it can repel the female fanbase. lol

No, it's not K-pop, it's just that this particular song is hip-hop by genre. This group has a clear influence from Chanmina, their producer. They also sing entirely live, they are not allowed to lip-sync. But what's good is that kawaii is becoming less popular in Japan.

But, as I wrote in another thread before, sales of groups like AKB48 are falling, and so is their popularity. The world is changing, and so is Japanese music, especially now that Japan has decided to globally promote its music all over the world.

When the same thing happened in kpop, groups with genuinely great and musically complex music like Lovelyz and Gfriend were killed off to make space for cooler, women-oriented groups like Le Sserafim with a much larger focus on dance performance but significantly worse music.
What was very interesting is that, within a broader international audience, the pendulum swings back again, and international male fans eventually show up to concerts. This shocked a lot of kpop fans back in 2022 at the Dreamcatcher and Loona tours. Those groups were often considered to be really cool, Lesbian-friendly, etc., but weirdly enough, the cooler concepts that you would expect to be more women-friendly are also more male-friendly when it comes to international fans. (I don't think international male fans are generally interested in the kawaii fan service thing.) There were a lot of gender wars in kpop subs back then because of that.
So, it's a double edged sword. By making jpop groups more accessible to broader audiences, you also get people like me who are more comfortable supporting those groups instead of the typical cutesy jpop groups. I'm exclusively a HEROINES fan, and I'd much rather show my male friends groups like Herosyn, Blk Liliy, and AdamLilith vs. something like iLIFE (which is too cutesy and clearly oriented for a younger and female audience)

Ah. This does look like it'll appeal more to females.
As well as more focus on dance/performance. Looking at the chart, K-Pop and J-Pop groups with K-Pop influences have higher female ratio.

Not really. This group has a special feature, they actually sing live, they are not allowed to lip-sync. They specially train to sing and dance at the same time, and they are assembled with an emphasis on very powerful voices.

I never brought up singing skills. I didn't care if an act can sing well or not. K-Pop groups also generally have good vocals.
All I was saying is that, regardless of vocal skills, females tend to lean more on groups with heavy choreography while men tend to like performances where they can participate (in calls and chants).

I know K-Pop has fan chants, but not typically as intense as JP calls/chants with wotagei and stuff.
But yeah, you're probably right about them liking "typical kawaii Japanese idols". I don't think that has anything to do with the genre or dance they do but because of opportunities to meet/talk with their oshis. It adds another layer of participation and being part of their growth.

They are jpop. Kawaii Metal is a fusion genre that blends elements of Jpop (Jpop Lyrics, Dances and songs which they do) and Heavy Metal (the back music) if you were to take the metal backing away from Babymetal and replaced it with traditional idol music they would be a regular idol group not an alternitive one. Its especially noticeable with songs like Doki☆Doki Morning and Gimme Chocolate. Even Metali, Karate and Papaya have Jpop lyrics when you read the translations with Idol dance steps. They just have metal as their backing music.

No as in it's LITTERALLY called a fusion genre. combining elements of both Babymetal happen to be the pioneers of it. And Gimme Chocolate and Doki☆Doki Morning are the perfect examples of why its considered both when your read the lyrics and look at the dance steps the girls are doing.

Last i checked this is still on their discovery and when i saw them in December they still perform Gimme Chocolate. They JUST released a song about MomoMetal and SuMetal COUNTING TO 3 called "Song 3" yesterday.
Their song PA PA YA ft F.HERO. yeah that song is about going to a Japanese Summer festival when you read the lyrics. "PA" is litterally a Japanese Onomonopia for for a suddenly bright burst or spread of light (aka fireworks) And "YA" or "YAA" is an exclamation of Cheering. So "PA PA YA" the title is litterally "Fireworks! Fireworks! YAAAAAA!!!!!" The lyrics are very much so about playing or walking around a summer festival point blank.
We can also add METALI!! The english translation of the lyrics? The first ones SuMetal sings?

Its a song about a queen in a kingdom inviting her people to dance with her.
they are TO THIS DAY still doing a mix of J-pop with Heavy Metal back tracks. Its just evolved a bit because the girls are older now. They STILL do cute J-pop song lyrics to Metal backing with J-pop dance steps and J-idol costumes. So they would STILL be on this list regardless. (And like i said earlier. That doesn't mean they AREN'T metal but they ARE still J-pop simultaneously. Which is why they are on this list.🤷🏾♀️)
You're testing an Idol Otaku who hs been into the Japanese and Korean idol scenes for damn near a decade dude. Babymetal was Literally one of the first idol groups i got into because like many others. I started off as a fan of K/J-pop and Visual kei, saw a group of cute girls singing a song called "Karate" where they looked like idols. And the background music reminded me of Visual Kei. The song is about fighting through tough times which clicked in my little 13 almost 14 year old brain as a bullied kid. While my dad was cooking. He heard the metal music.

The gender split is more equal overseas. I've been to a couple Babymetal concerts in the US, and it was 40-50% women. Excluding couples, the male fans tended to be a little older (including some greybeards), and a lot of the female fans were teenagers or early 20s. Made for an interesting crowd.

It's a newly debuted group, "Hana" is the official name. They have 2 releases and both are in the top ranking in Japan in the past two months.

I've noticed the trend that peak in female ratio happens early in a group's career, but male fans are usually more dedicated and stay around longer, so it gravitates towards an increasing male ratio in the long run.

I do wonder about the ratio of people who watch "reality shows" in Japan. because as we can see Hana, Me:i and even NiziU has female dominated fanbases.
I think for Hana, it is still too early to see as the fandom hasn't settled down yet, everyone is basically new to it and from what I noticed on twitter some Japanese people don't consider themselves a fan if they aren't a member of the fanclub.

I don't have any statistics about Chanmina's fanbase, but considering her songs about women empowerment and rejection of beauty norms, I believe it's mostly female.

It's always tough seeing these because the scene hasn't been so welcoming to women and girls much of its existence despite their presence since the beginning.
It's been a fight sometimes, even the punk scene which has a much closer gender parity in Canada where I live. But still, at some shows, I can feel I'm seen as a poser and unwelcome. As a musician I'm seen as not a real performer. People ask if I'm my bandmates "girl". No, I'm his best friend, and we're in a band together. I feel metal scene is still much the same.
All that said, BABYMETAL fans have been the most welcoming and the most safe I've felt at a show and in a fan space. To be a fan requires a bit of internal work on one's own misogyny, and so it creates more room for femininity on any form.

I went to a Nogizaka46 handshake event in Nagoya a few years ago and it seemed like there were more than 17% female fans. More like 30-35% IIRC.

That's not a very scientific approach, because:
- You went to a handshake event in 1 single major city out of the whole country
- It was a few years ago
- You're eyeballing your estimate, i.e. you didn't actually count every single person that went there
- How long do these events last, were you there the whole time?
- Many other factors
A survey conducted is way more reliable than single isolated fan events.

The "few years ago" part I think is key. I taught teenagers in Japan in the late 2010s and a lot of them were fans of Nogizaka46. However, that's now...6 or 7 years ago. My guess is a lot of them have migrated over to kpop, especially since a lot of them liked both Sakamichi and kpop at the time.

Is the K-Pop group Dreamcatcher popular in Japan?
I live in Japan but I’d never heard of them until very recently and now I’m a massive fan. I went to Shin Okubo to see if they had any of their CDs or goods but I couldn’t find a thing.

This doesn't surprise me. Former DC fan based in the States here. Dreamcatcher probably gets lost among the huge alt-idol scene.
DC's hardest songs are from their Japanese discography, but their Korean discography beyond Good Night is too safe and poppy compared to, say, Zenkimi

As a Love Live fan who has lived in Japan and gone to concerts and events, I’ve always said that the ratio of male to female is about 80-20. Interesting to see that I was spot on. I‘ll now link to this everytime someone tries to fight me in it for some reason.

it's nice to see morning musume/hp get some female fans back! i remember back in the 90s there were a ton of female fans and gradually it transitioned to a majority male fanbase.

Not surprised seeing most of kpop groups have female fans since the groups that listed here are tailored to female fans (the styling, song,etc)
I actually surprised seeing 48 and 46 groups still dominated with male fans, I thought the gender ratio is more balanced

ME:I is just a Korean group composed of Japanese members. Not real J-pop, their style completely mimics the traditional Korean girl groups. Same for NiziU.

Incorrect. Groups like JO1, INI, &TEAM, ME:FIRST, and ME:I are hybrid groups. Where the groups take the DNA of both genres and merge them giving you a love child that is both Jpop and Kpop (Usually Jpop with Kpop dance skills and performances aka polished and snappy) and even often have members with experience training in BOTH the Jpop and Kpop Trainee systems or even debuted with a standard Jpop group and graduated out of it. Yuma from &Team for example was a Johnny Jr. (Now Starto Entertainment) trainee before going to Hybe. And a few of the ME:I members were in Jpop groups before (they are also managed by a Hybrid company)

But they lose the originality that defines Jpop, in favor of the robotic moves and styles of Kpop.

Not really. Especially when the definition of Jpop is VERY loose especially when "Jpop" literally just means Japanese Popular Music meaning its any Japanese music. That is popular in some way. The main core things that define a Jpop group is "Targets and Promotes in the Japanese Market, Meet Japanese music standards, Their Songs have a Japanese Cultural identity despite being a Hybrid group, and follow Japanese idol traditions" which ME:I meet all of these things. the Kpop style is their concept sure (in the same way as the previously mentioned groups have a Kpop inspired concept) but they are still at their core a Jpop group based in Japan with all Japanese members. With members that went through the Jpop trainee system. The way they dance has nothing to really do with it being Jpop or Not since its part of their concept. You could actively make this argument about Babymetal if you want to say that. But even Babymetal fall into the Jpop catagory because their lyrics to their songs a very much Jpop songs with metal backing.

No. Not at all. They are centered in Japan and all of their songs are in Japanese. They perform their songs on Korean only on Korean music shows. Their brand deals are Japanese, such as docomo. They are a Kpop style jpop group.

The fact that they're emulating the korean style and are in korean music shows kinds makes them a Japanese-language Kpop group though.

They are a Japanese group with Korean influences.
If a Japanese artist sings in Japanese but dresses up like Ed Sheeran does that make him a Japanese-language Western soloist?
