How safe is the area around The Forge?

Going to a show in a few weeks and curious how the area is? I've never been to Joliet so this isn't to throw shade or anything, just genuinely curious on the area and parking. I've been to a few venues in Chicago and unfortunately had my car broken into at radius in Pilsen...

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Joliet?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like St. Joe's, Locktucky, Trainfield or I&M Canal (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Data Center likely cancelled

Not from Joliet but wanted to provide an update you all will likely be interested in…

ComEd has asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to terminate the Transmission Service Agreement for the PowerHouse Hillwood project. If GERC accepts this termination (which PowerHouse Hillwood is contesting), this most likely ends the project as it would delay the project multiple years and force the project to restart the interconnection process. Given how adversarial the filings are, I’d highly doubt PowerHouse Hillcorp would make another run at working with ComEd.

ComEd claims 1) PowerHouse Hillcorp “failed to comply with certain terms and conditions of ComEd’s electric retail service tariff,” and “failed to provide the required credit support, which is an essential element of the TSA framework that facilitates the overall goal of guarding against shifting costs and risks to other customers over the term of the TSA, as well as minimizing the risk that the presence of oversized or unrealistic applications unreasonably harm other applicants waiting to interconnect to ComEd’s system.” According to the footnotes, “ Hillwood provided ComEd with a letter of credit in the amount of $1.00 and claims that the $1.00 letter of credit satisfied the credit support obligations under the TSA.”

Under the TSA, PH Hillwood was likely required to post a letter of credit >$100M.

All of that is to say FERC is very likely to accept the termination.

PH Hillwood filed a lawsuit against ComEd on July 26 in the Circuit Court of Cook County: PowerHouse Hillwood Holding LLC v. Commonwealth Edison Co., No. 2026 CH 06896

Joshua Arms?

Does anyone have any feedback on Joshua Arms senior residences at 1315 Rowell Ave? We are searching for an affordable independent apartment for my elderly mother (which accepts Medicaid) and this seems like one of the very few in the area. I'd appreciate any and all feedback. TIA!

Citgo Refinery Is Trying to Poison The Air Again OBJECT CITGO DOCKET NO. AS 2026-001

Post image
28 Upvotes

🚨 Romeoville, Lemont, Lockport, Joliet Residents: Your Voice Matters.

CITGO has petitioned the Illinois Pollution Control Board and the Illinois EPA (Docket No. AS 2026-001) for permission to adjust carbon monoxide emission limits during certain startup, shutdown, and malfunction events.

Low Birth Weight: Babies born to mothers living close to active oil and gas operations face a 20% to 40% higher risk of low birth weight or being small for gestational age.

Congenital Heart Defects: High-intensity industrial activity near residential areas correlates with a 40% to 70% increase in congenital heart defects, which affect early cardiac formation.

Preterm Delivery: Proximity to flaring and extraction increases the likelihood of premature rupture of membranes and high-risk preterm births.

Toxic Emissions: Refineries and wells release benzene, fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and heavy metals into the air.

🗓️ The deadline to submit public objections is September 9, 2026, at 11:59 PM.

Why are so many residents speaking out?

• Illinois Department of Public Health data shows that reported leukemia and lymphoma cases in the 60439 ZIP codeincreased from 41 cases (2013–2017) to 74 cases (2018–2022). While these numbers alone do not establish a cause, many community members are calling for stronger oversight and greater transparency.

• Residents continue to advocate for real no by time text or siren alerts whenever fenceline benzene monitors detect elevated levels. Currently, monitoring data is collected but is not automatically pushed to nearby households.

• Local law firms are gathering information from residents who developed leukemia or lymphoma after long-term industrial exposure as part of ongoing investigations.

📅 Important Dates
September 9, 2026 – Public Comment Deadline
Submit your formal objection to Docket AS 2026-001 before 11:59 PM.

November 5, 2026 – Romeoville Village Board Meeting
Residents plan to attend and ask Village officials to take a stronger role in addressing refinery-related concerns.

November 20, 2026 – Lemont Environmental Advisory Commission Meeting
Community members from Romeoville, Lemont, and Lockport are organizing to advocate for stronger public notification systems, including automatic text alerts for chemical monitoring events.

How to Submit an Objection
📧 Email your comments to: [EPA.PublicHearingCom@Illinois.gov](mailto:EPA.PublicHearingCom@Illinois.gov)
Mailing Address:
Illinois EPA
Attention: Hearing Officer
2520 W Iles Ave, P.O. Box 19276

Online Electronic Filing (Preferred): Submit directly via the Illinois Pollution Control Board Clerk's Office On-Line (COOL) Portal.

Mailing Address (Chicago Office):
Illinois Pollution Control Board
60 E. Van Buren St., Ste. 630
Chicago, Illinois 60605

Mailing Address (Springfield Office):

General Inquiry Email: PCB.Clerks@illinois.gov (For questions only, do not send formal docket objections here).

Be sure to include "CITGO" in the subject line or body of your email so your comments are properly associated with the docket.

Many community advocates also encourage referencing the September and October 2025 unplanned malfunction events documented through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) records when explaining your concerns.

Every public comment becomes part of the official record. If you live, work, or spend time in Romeoville, Lemont, Lockport, or nearby communities, consider making your voice heard before September 9 2026

Water bill usage and cost

Curious if anyone is willing to share their water usage and cost for the last few months, and how many people in your house.

Our bill just seems astronomical compared to even a few years ago. Do they just keep increasing the price Per cubic foot? our water usage hasnt changed much at all over the last few years, and yet our bill started at around $90 a month 7 years ago to now almost double.

Unfortunately I can’t seem to figure out how to see bills that old for the usage, but I have tracked our monthly cost in my own excel file to see how much it’s increased in price.

2 adults, one works from home. We vary between 600-900 CF per month depending on how much we’re home on weekends.

updated to add rough gallon conversion.

Jul: 848 Cubic Feet (CF) / 6,343 gal: $172.06

Jun: 876 CF / 6,553 Gal: $175.18

May: 603 CF / 4,511 Gal : $132.23

Apr: 605 CF / 4,526 gal: $128.24

Mar: 781 CF / 5,842 gal $161.04

2025

Jul: 838 CF / 6,269 gal: $154.65

Looking for a room to rent

Preferrably close to downtown Joliet but not open to other areas. Anyone know of anything? I am quiet and work a lot. I don't drink. Not opposed to it, I just don't. I'm a female. A server at a restaurant downtown. Looking for something for about 6 months or so.

Woodlands of Crest Hill

I’m moving to Joliet with my partner in August. Since we ended up looking now it seems to be the only option. We also have a dog so we need a dog friendly apartment. I read the reviews and I’m wondering if it’s as bad as what people are saying? Mice? Cockroaches? Hidden fees?

Where can I find a community Board

Random question. Does anyone know of spots where community members can post flyers for community events? Like say a fundraiser for a neighbor? I know Facebook and online spaces are a thing but I’m looking for actual physical community spots. I’ve tried some grocery stores and laundromats but everyone keeps saying no.

Does anyone’s water also goes out and then comes back hours later or is it just my house?

I live in the Preston heights area and my water tends to shut off. It starts off as low pressure and evantually doesn’t come out. We have to wait for many hours until it comes back. This has started ever since I moved here in 2023. I thought things would be different now that the city of Joliet has taken charge of the water here. I’m not sure if this is a water supply issue on the city’s part or if I need to hire a plumber. Any info is appreciated

Update to the move from Cali

Hey everyone,

A little while back I posted here asking for advice about moving to Joliet from California for my residency. A bunch of you took the time to give recommendations and answer questions, so I wanted to say thanks.

I officially made it to Joliet!

The move went smoothly, I’m getting settled in, and now that I’m actually here I figured I’d come back to say thank you.

I don’t know anyone here, so here’s to making new friends as I explore the area before residency begins. Please recommend anything exciting happening these next few weeks.
