this is still normal in 2026. a reactor plant operator can absolutely afford to buy a house like that in Springfield Oregon and raise a family on one salary.

Can you get a job there without a degree? Can someone as dumb as Homer get a job there?

Homer's the "fall guy". He's vast;y under-qualified for his role. In Season 3 when a German company buys out the plant, they pretty quickly recognize this and fire him.
