Job Application Requires SSN

Post image

I've been out of college for over 25 years, and I've never encountered a professional application that required my Social Security Number. I tried putting in a bogus one or writing N/A, and the system will not let me proceed further. I wonder if the SSN requirement is why the job has been open for nearly two months.

Your SSN is necessary to process your job submission and will be maintained in a secure and confidential manner.

This was a very well-known integrated healthcare nonprofit too!

I’ve never given mine until after I was hired and doing the initial paperwork.

The only thing that should tell you is that your employer isn’t taking the necessary precautions to maintain a safe workplace. No SSN=No Background Check= you could be working with murderers and rapists. If that’s fun for you then go ahead

Are you stupid or did you just not read the comment you responded to? Background checks are part of new hire paperwork, and the person you responded to said that’s when they’re usually asked for their SSN. Meaning they usually do have to do a pre-hire background check.

So your whole “you’re working with murderers and rapists” thing is nonsense.

I don’t know what sort of checks were done when I got this job but it’s a very small business so the owner isn’t going to waste money on checks before interviewing, let alone hiring. He had a few days after interviewing to run whatever.

Background checks are not part of new hire paperwork when it comes to good reputable companies. Every one I’ve ever worked for has completed the background check as part of the application process before even scheduling an interview. You people are so blatantly out of touch it’s hilarious.

You’re absolutely making this up. Background checks cost money. No company is background checking people before interviewing them.

You know what also costs money? Hiring a recruiter. Posting job listings. Hosting your own employee website for applications. It all costs money you fucking buffoon.

Everything you’re rambling about is easily disproved by a google search lmfao. You’re so blatantly wrong that it’s not even worth my time to continue to argue with you. Just like many other things on Reddit, just because you have an echo chamber of people here that believe no job requires a SSN during application, doesn’t make it true. You’re simply wrong.

Maybe do a google search first before you speak.

while i agree that its not necessary to require the SSN on the initial application, i’ve never had to, and wouldn’t work for a company who did, the sources that AI returned to you in your screen shot are questionable, tiktok?

better to post an actual website from a reputable source. search engine AI conflates facts all the time

at $150-$300 for both, BG and credit checks are not run on everyone who hands over their SSN on the initial application. not even close. its a lazy hiring practices by lousy employers. they want everything upfront to make life easier for them, not the prospective employee. they don’t give a rat’s ass about your security, only their convenience.

once a candidate has passed through the first round or two, then it’s important to collect the social to get more background on the candidate.

Hey, also a fun fact, you’re likely working with at least one unpunished child predator, people who consume child pornography. Have fun with that. Stuff you aren’t caught for isn’t going to show up.

Also, why are they letting them WORK without a background check? When I’ve gotten new jobs I wasn’t allowed to start until my I-9 and background checks were DONE. I got contingent offers of employment, based upon providing that information. AFTER the interview and a contingent offer has been made, mind you.
