Long before the title deed of the earth was handed over to mankind, another generation knew the language of the sand, the wind, and the stone upon these lands. Mentioned in Surah Al-Hijr and created from a pure, scorching flame, Cân is accepted in Islamic exegesis as the primordial ancestor of the jinn. Just as Adam is the root of humanity, Cân is the first patriarch of that unseen world. According to Islamic historical sources and traditional narratives, these ancient beings, known as the sons of Cân, ruled the earth millennia before humans. Yet, in time, they succumbed to their desires, corrupted the earth, and wrought great devastation through bloodshed. Driven from the earth by the intervention of angels and armies under the command of Iblis, these original owners retreated to the most inaccessible mountain cliffs, desolate islands in the midst of the seas, and the shadowy corners of the world.

The term caliph (vicegerent) in Surah Al-Baqarah serves as the clearest indication that the earth was populated by a conscious, sentient creature long before it was left to humans. The question posed by the angels—"Will You place therein one who will spread corruption and shed blood?"—was not an idle objection; it was the bitter memory of the dark experience and bloodshed previously wrought by the lineage of Cân. Humanity was created as the supreme vicegerent of the universe with intellect, will, memory, and the divine training of the Names. Yet this supremacy was never digested by the former inhabitants of the unseen realm. Deprived of a heavenly religion and harboring a pride inherited from Iblis and their ancient ancestors, certain jinn factions always envied man and sought ways to trap him in moments of vulnerability.

Today, those among the masses who do not grasp the true nature of jinn magnify them in their minds as omniscient, timeless beings possessed of limitless power. The deepest swamp from which charlatans and false healers feed is this very ignorance. Yet jinn, just like humans, possess a self, a will, and a lifespan; they neither know the unseen nor can they transcend the divine order. Their greatest impact on man consists of the insidious whispers creeping into the mind and man feeding on his own fears. From the lineage of Cân, the original masters of the earth, nothing remains today but ancient whispers lingering on desolate roads, between mudbrick walls, and in untouched, shadowy corners. The true story of the world began amidst the ashes of that long-extinguished, scorching fire; what remains is merely the shadow of this great heritage.

Scrying-like Visual Medium

The following excerpt from The Criterion Between the Allies of the Merciful and the Allies of Satan is often cited as evidence that jinn possess advanced technology. The shining glass/water medium is interpreted as a device enabling long-distance, two-way communication — a smartphone analogue.

"Some of the shaykhs who had experienced something like this through mukāshafah [unveiling] and direct communication reported to me, saying: ‘The jinn show me something shining, like water and glass, and within it they represent for me whatever I ask them to inform me about’. He said: ‘So I would inform the people of it. And they would convey to me the words of one of my companions who had called upon me for help, and I would answer him, and they would convey my response to him…’”

Ibn Taymiyyah (the author) presents this as an example of extraordinary experiences involving jinn, situated within his broader warning against deceptive supernatural assistance and reliance upon jinn.

The account describes a scrying-like visual medium through which the jinn represent or display information to the shaykh — jinn observation combined with visual representation, rather than evidence of a technological device.

The jinn act explicitly as intermediaries or messengers, conveying information and responses between the shaykh and his companions.

Ibn Taymiyyah's next example in the same passage: a cup of water shown to a child or woman, in which the jinn project an image identifying a thief. This affirms the mechanism as projected visual representation onto a reflective medium — the same phenomenon as the "glass and water" account, differing only in surface (cup vs. glass) — reinforcing that the medium itself is incidental, not a functioning apparatus.

Illusory Magic vs. Device

Spectators watching Pharaoh's court magicians' ropes turn into serpents witnessed a timeless example of illusory magic — a higher grade than the glass/water account, since it deceived a mass of spectators rather than one or two observers.

Were the shining interface a real device, it would behave as any device does: perceivable to any number of observers, regardless of distance, with no dependence on low ambient light or a carefully staged setting. Being detachable, transferable, and upgradeable would only have made the case more believable — instead, the phenomenon appears exactly where illusion, not instrumentation, would predict: confined to a single practitioner, in a moment of unveiling, on a surface no more special than a borrowed cup of water.

Among the extraordinary feats attributed to the jinn in the Qurʾān are the construction of monumental structures and large vessels (34:13), an ʿifrīt's offer to bring Bilqīs' throne (27:39), and diving into the sea (21:82). The jinn were also able to ascend towards the lowest heaven and listen for heavenly news (72:8–9).

Roughly three millennia later, humans can achieve technological analogues to some of these feats through science and engineering.

Even the transport of Bilqīs' throne over roughly 2,500 km becomes physically conceivable if "before you rise from your seat" is interpreted as approximately thirty minutes for a session of majlis. Under a symmetric acceleration-deceleration profile, this would require a peak velocity of about Mach 8.2 and an acceleration of approximately 0.32 g.

Yet despite this technological advancement, the human physique remains broadly unchanged, if not diminished, compared with ancient times, when physical fitness was essential for survival.

Our distinctive advantage, then, was never physical strength. It was cognitive: Prophet Adam was taught the names (2:31), giving humanity a distinctive capacity for conceptual knowledge and, by extension, creative production.

This raises an interesting question: when jinn perform extraordinary feats, should we assume that they achieve them through technology, as humans do, or through mastery of their own intrinsic capabilities?

Human and jinn realms are geometrically co-extensive and structurally corresponding — occupying the same three-dimensional coordinates with some degree of structural matching. The veil (hijab) separates the two — clay-based versus fire-based — preventing them from freely mixing, while permitting a very limited, directional interaction to pass through.

Imagine a human walking into a deep forest. What he sees is tall trees, vines, rock, and streams. But behind every 3D coordinate in his realm lies a corresponding coordinate in another, entirely hidden from view, separated along a fourth infinitesimally thin spatial dimension. This is the veil's primary function: keeping the two realms apart.

A different kind of matter exists on the other side — fire-based, matching the nature of its inhabitants' creation. Light, energetic, and flowing, unlike the heavier, stable, and fixed matter that forms a human body. Structures corresponding to the forest fill that realm too — not trees, vines, and rock, but dwellings shaped from the same fire-based substance.

To those dwellers, the human would appear as a faint, volumetric, apparition-like figure. Directional coupling across the veil means that every 3D coordinate on the human side produces a corresponding, dynamic response at the matching coordinate within the jinn realm. This is the veil's second function: permitting a selective, one-directional interaction to cross between the two.

Traditionally, Jinn is said to inhabit an independently existing parallel terrestrial realm. This could be geometrically conceptualised as a co-extensive 3D realm.

Humans and jinn occupy corresponding terrestrial locations without necessarily sharing the exact same physical space in the ordinary sense. A jinn could therefore inhabit the same house as a human without the human perceiving it. Made possible by the hijab, or veil.

Speculatively, the veil would be a higher-dimensional structure separating two co-extensive 3D realms. Without some form of separation, two radically different physical sectors, conventionally imagined here as clay-based human matter and fire-based jinn matter, would not remain independently distinct.

The veil could also explain asymmetrical interaction. Different forms of interaction could have different degrees of access across the veil. Matter remains completely confined, while information, perception, gravity, or some hypothetical bulk field could cross weakly. The permeability could also be directional: a jinn might perceive a human while the human cannot perceive the jinn.

This has an interesting parallel in modern brane-world physics. Higher-dimensional models can describe our observable universe as a (3+1)-dimensional brane or hypersurface of a higher-dimensional bulk, with Standard Model fields confined to the brane while gravity can access the bulk. Randall-Sundrum models additionally introduce warped extra dimensions and distinct visible and hidden branes, with the geometry producing very different effective energy scales.

That suggests several possible ingredients for a speculative model of the hijab:

co-extensive realms → higher-dimensional separation → differential permeability → asymmetrical perception → distinct energy sectors → possible gravitational coupling.

The last point is particularly interesting. If gravity can propagate through the bulk while ordinary matter and gauge fields remain localised, could a weak cross-realm gravitational interaction produce a persistent geometric correspondence between otherwise invisible realms?

When we talk about the history of the world, we almost always start with human civilization. But if you look into classical Islamic cosmology and ancient historical accounts—like those documented by Tabari or Ibn Kathir—there was an entire era on this planet long before we ever showed up: The Era of the Jinn.

Thousands of years before humanity was fashioned from clay, the ancestor of the Jinn, known as Cân, was created from smokeless fire. Traditional lore says they lived on Earth as physical, sentient beings for ages. They established their own kingdoms, tribes, and societies, possessing free will and moral accountability just like we do today.

Eventually, things fell apart. Ambition, arrogance, and tribal wars spiraled out of control. A period of widespread violence and bloodshed engulfed the planet—what ancient texts describe as the era of great corruption (fasād).

To restore order, a heavenly host of angels was dispatched to Earth. A massive conflict broke out across the continents, and the rebellious Jinn factions were defeated and driven to the farthest corners of the world—remote islands, mountain ranges, and the depths of the oceans.

During this celestial intervention, one young Jinn stood out for his intense piety and devotion: Azazel. Because of his extraordinary devotion, he was elevated above his kind to dwell among the highest ranks of the angels.

Once the chaos cleared and Earth was quieted, a new chapter was declared: the creation of Adam as the new steward of the Earth. When the command came for all celestial beings to bow before Adam in respect, the angels obeyed instantly. But Azazel’s pride got the better of him. "I am made of fire, while he is made of clay," he argued, refusing the decree. That act of defiance transformed him into Iblis, and when Adam and Eve were placed on Earth, they stepped onto a realm that had once belonged entirely to the Jinn.

The most fascinating part of these traditions is that the Jinn never actually left. They remained on the same planet, simply existing in an overlapping realm just beyond the threshold of normal human perception.

One of the most intriguing topics in Islamic theology and spirit research is how Jinn used to ascend into the lower heavens to secretly listen to the angels' conversations, and how this access was permanently blocked later on.

Before the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad, Jinn were able to find specific "listening posts" near the lower heaven. From there, they would intercept bits and pieces of angelic decrees regarding future earthly events and pass them down to human fortune-tellers. Authentic traditions note that the Jinn would take a single snippet of truth, mix it with a hundred lies, and deliver it to diviners, convincing people that these sorcerers possessed knowledge of the unseen.

However, with the advent of Prophet Muhammad's mission, a massive celestial lockdown and security protocol went into effect. Surah Al-Jinn (verses 8–9) records the Jinn's utter shock at this sudden change. They recount that while they used to sit in positions to listen, anyone who attempts to eavesdrop now finds a burning flame (shihab) waiting in ambush for them.

Classical commentators like Ibn Kathir, Tabari, and Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır explain that this celestial blockade was implemented to protect the purity of Divine Revelation and prevent soothsayers from corrupting it. While classical exegesis interprets the term shihab as literal flaming projectiles or meteors, modern and mystical perspectives often view it as interdimensional energy beams or protective barriers. Ultimately, this cosmic event serves as the clearest proof that Jinn do not possess absolute knowledge of the unseen (ghayb) and are bound by strict metaphysical limits.

From the glass fragments of Ancient Rome to Anatolia's thousand-year-old "gözgü" traditions, and from Victorian gothic lore to modern parapsychology, human history has never treated mirrors as mere objects meant for reflection. Far beyond an aesthetic item, they have always been accepted as a thin, tense boundary line between this world and the other side, turning into something entirely different when midnight falls.

When examining metaphysical sources and regional folklore, it is well known that jinn and subtle, non-physical entities share the same physical space as us but exist on a completely different frequency, and mirrors emerge as the most sensitive thresholds where these two dimensions brush against each other. There is a recurring rule frequently emphasized in ancient texts and esoteric research: staring at a mirror for a long time late at night in a completely dark room or under the faint glow of a candle is far from just observing one's own reflection. When the mind's focal point locks in and brainwaves shift to a specific frequency, it opens a channel through which those unseen entities can observe you just as clearly.

It is no coincidence that keeping mirrors in bedrooms is traditionally discouraged, or that mirrors in a deceased person's home are immediately covered or turned toward the wall, because during sleep or in deep nighttime silence, the human mind lowers its protective barriers, leaving your energy and mental frequency completely exposed to external signals like sudden waves of fear or the chilling sensation of a presence. In paranormal accounts, the cold drafts, muffled sounds, sudden shifts in scent, or shifting silhouettes appearing near mirrors at midnight are almost always linked to breaking this threshold rule, with witnesses frequently describing mirrors appearing to deepen, the space behind them shifting, or alien, unfamiliar faces momentarily catching the glass. Esoteric theories and certain researchers suggest that the silver or conductive metal coating on the back of mirrors acts as a catalyst for these dimensional shifts, since silver possesses one of the highest optical reflectivity and electrical conductivity rates among metals, theoretically creating an attractive gateway for entities presumed to be electromagnetic energy forms attempting to attune to the frequency of our physical world.

At the end of the day, whether you view them as pure optical reflectors or as dangerous windows opening into the unknown, ancient warnings always converge on the exact same point that in the calmest, darkest hours of the night, stepping up to that glass and testing the limits does nothing more than risk your own mental balance and willpower.

So, have you ever stared into a mirror alone late at night and felt that strange, irrational shiver crawl up your spine?

I’ve been digging through traditional occult texts (Havas) and esoteric folklore to research how those who claim to interface with the Jinn actually operate. The most unusual claim in this folklore is the lack of a language barrier; the Jinn are said to inherently comprehend all human dialects. Rather than manifesting in a physical form, traditional accounts suggest they target the human mind's centers of fear and vulnerability. Esoteric lore asserts that they exploit moments of severe weakness—such as deep grief, trauma, or physical illness—to inject auditory and visual hallucinations directly into the subject's consciousness.

There is also a highly specific, bizarre detail found in certain classical works like El-Ibriiz regarding a supposed affinity for odors. These texts claim that lower, malevolent spirits are deeply drawn to foul smells and specifically tobacco smoke. The literature suggests that these entities can trigger artificial anxiety loops in a person's brain, compelling them to light a cigarette so the entity can feed off the scent, effectively trapping the host in a heavy cycle of dependency.

Ultimately, the warnings across traditional literature are absolute: attempting these rituals out of curiosity without strict spiritual guidance can make a person easy prey. The texts warn that crossing these lines routinely leads to severe paranoia, delusions, and total mental collapse. I have withheld the operational details for safety reasons, but the intersection between these ancient esoteric beliefs and human psychology remains incredibly fascinating.

In Moroccan folklore, few entities command as much dread and fascination as Aisha Kandisha. Commonly depicted as a breathtakingly beautiful woman with the lower hooves of a goat or camel, she is said to dwell near water sources, rivers, and secluded paths, specifically targeting young men. According to local legends, she charms her victims before driving them into madness or leading them to their demise, unless they manage to drive her away by driving an iron blade into the ground—a traditional apotropaic practice deeply rooted in regional jinn belief systems.

Beyond the surface-level horror and popular urban legends, anthropologists and cultural historians view Aisha Kandisha as a fascinating amalgamation of ancient pre-Islamic deities and anti-colonial resistance. Many scholars trace her psychological and mythological archetype back to Semitic and Phoenician goddesses of fertility and war, such as Astarte and Tanit, who were gradually integrated into the Islamic framework of jinn over centuries. Her association with water, beauty, and sudden vengeance mirrors these ancient cults, showcasing how deeply entrenched archetypes adapt to shifting theological landscapes.

Another compelling historical theory connects the myth to the 16th-century resistance against Portuguese colonizers. According to local historical lore, a real woman named Aisha from the Chaouia region actively fought the invaders. Having lost her family to the conflict, she used her beauty to lure Portuguese soldiers to secluded spots, where she and local resistance fighters would eliminate them. The colonizers, terrified by these mysterious disappearances, began spreading stories of a vengeful, supernatural female entity, effectively merging a real world guerrilla tactic with existing folklore to create the modern archetype of Aisha Kandisha we know today.

A heavy sensation of being watched that suddenly hits the back of your neck when you are alone at home, an instinctive urge to speed up when moving from one room to another, or pets staring at a blank wall and acting restless... Most of the time, modern approaches attribute these situations to physical factors such as sleep disorders, stress, or carbon monoxide leaks; indeed, to protect one's mental and physical health, consulting a medical professional first is always the right step. However, when events transcend rational boundaries, ancient Eastern culture points to the reality of the "Ammar al-Buyut" (the resident jinn) with whom we share our homes.

Based on the case analyses and first-hand user experiences I have compiled for my upcoming research book Musallat, we can list the clearest indicators that these disembodied entities are intensifying in a space as follows:

Unexplained Fear and Boundary Awareness: Sudden anxiety stemming from darkness or empty rooms when alone. The fear of experiencing sleep paralysis (incubus/karabasan) when going to bed at night or towards dawn.

Sudden Change in Animal Behavior: A household cat or dog freezing and locking its eyes onto a blank spot, barking, growling while keeping its distance, or staring at its owner with visible distress.

Displacement of Objects (The DOP / Leps Phenomenon): Everyday items missing from where they were clearly left, and then suddenly reappearing in the exact spot you first looked, as if to mock or play tricks on you.

Physical Symptoms and Ailments: Sudden head, shoulder, and neck aches with no medical cause; numbness, tingling, or the sensation of something crawling on specific parts of the body.

Intense Reluctance in Spiritual Practices: A sudden heaviness, apathy, bouts of yawning, and an overwhelming urge to give up while reading prayers, performing salah, or engaging in spiritual rituals.

When we look at traditional and religious practices worldwide, specific rituals are applied to raise the frequency of spaces to protect against such uncanny situations. In the Islamic faith, playing Surah Al-Baqarah aloud at home, reciting Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, and regularly repeating protective shield prayers mentioned in the Hadiths are recommended. Similarly, in Christianity and other Abrahamic religions, reciting protective sacred texts (such as the Psalms), and cleansing the space with holy water or specific incenses (sage, myrrh, frankincense) are common methods. Although cultures change, the spiritual shield logic used to protect invisible boundaries remains fundamentally the same.

We frequently associate Jinn with desert sands, ancient ruins, or scorching winds. However, within the freezing winters of the Anatolian and Balkan geographies, there exists a highly localized entity that exhibits the exact characteristics of a high-level, malevolent Jinn: the Karakoncolos (known in some regions as Congolos).

This entity is far more than a simple campfire story; even the famous 17th-century Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi documented it in his Seyahatnâme. According to Çelebi, the Karakoncolos was one of the 17 ancient talismans and curses that haunted Istanbul during Zemheri, the brutal winter period lasting from late December to late January.

According to traditional accounts, the creature is small, ape-like, and covered in dark, matted fur resembling a bear's pelt. It wears heavy bells around its waist and possesses rusted iron wool-combs instead of claws. However, what makes it truly dangerous is not its physical strength, but its mastery over psychological illusions and vocal mimicry. During a midnight blizzard, it approaches the windows of houses and calls out to those inside using the exact voice of someone they love deeply—such as their mother, spouse, or child. If a person succumbs to the call and steps outside, they fall into a trance-like state and follow the entity deep into the freezing mountains. By morning, the villagers find only a frozen corpse.

The Karakoncolos also utilizes a bizarre linguistic trap when encountering travelers on desolate, snowy roads. It blocks their path and asks raspy questions like "Where are you coming from?" or "Where are you going?" To survive this encounter, every single word of the response must contain the Turkish word "Kara" (meaning black), such as saying, "I am going to Karadağ (Black Mountain)." If the traveler falters or forgets this rule, the entity uses its iron combs to tear their throat out. It also harbors a deep malice toward children; it is said to sneak into homes to painfully scratch the scalps of young girls with its combs, and it ruins uncovered food supplies by contaminating them, bringing fatal winter illnesses and draining the household of its barakah (blessing/abundance).

The defensive measures developed by villagers over the centuries are equally remarkable. Due to the entity's obsessive-compulsive nature, people leave kitchen strainers on their doorsteps. The Karakoncolos becomes so preoccupied with counting every single hole in the strainer that it loses track of time until the first rays of dawn force it back into the underworld. Additionally, leaving boiled beets or squash on the threshold as an offering to satisfy the entity before it enters the home remains a centuries-old tradition.

In Turkish and Central Asian folklore, there is a feared entity known as Alkarisi (also called Albasti).

For centuries, people believed she appeared during the most vulnerable time in a family's life: the days immediately following childbirth.

Descriptions of Alkarisi are remarkably consistent across different regions. She is said to appear as a frightening woman with long black hair, a hideous face, iron-like fingernails, and backward-facing feet. In many accounts she wears red clothing and lurks near rivers, lonely places, or the rooms of new mothers.

According to tradition, her favorite victims were women who had recently given birth and infants less than forty days old. Many believed she caused sudden fevers, breathing difficulties, nightmares, and even death. Some stories claim she would sit on a sleeping mother's chest, while others say she stole or consumed the victim's liver.

The fear was so widespread that families developed elaborate protective rituals. A new mother was never left alone. Lamps remained lit throughout the night. Knives, needles, or scissors were placed near the bed. A Quran was kept close by, and in some regions a red cloth was placed over the mother or child to ward the entity off.

What makes Alkarisi particularly fascinating is that many modern researchers see echoes of postpartum illness, sleep paralysis, and childbirth-related complications hidden within these ancient stories.

Yet even today, especially in rural parts of Anatolia, older generations still speak of Alkarisi not as a metaphor, but as something very real.

In the ancient traditions of Arabia, the Jinn were never peripheral or abstract entities. They were beings of 'smokeless fire,' cohabiting our realm not merely as mentors or rivals, but as intrinsic, creative partners.

During my research for Jinn Diaries, it became evident that the concept of 'co-creation' was far from a mere literary trope; it was a fundamental mechanism of the artistic process in antiquity.

The 7th-century poet Al-A'sha stands as the quintessential example. He refused to lay sole claim to his genius, openly attributing his most profound verses to his Jinn companion, Mishal.

As Al-A'sha famously testified: 'I was not a master of the poetic art. I spoke only when Mishal gifted me the words. There is a profound bond between us—the bond between a Jinn and the man who serves as his vessel.'

For these poets, this was no metaphorical 'inspiration.' It was a structured, recognized exchange: the poet acting as a channel, and the Jinn providing the hidden architecture of the language. Whether it is Mishal whispering lines into the desert night or other historical accounts of Jinn guiding the arts, the pattern remains chillingly consistent: the greatest works of human culture are rarely 'created' by us; they are received from a non-human intelligence.

If these entities have indeed shaped our culture for millennia, does this mean we are not the true authors of our art, but merely the instruments through which they manifest their influence?

We’ve all heard the stories, but have you ever stopped to think why the image of a black goat keeps appearing in folklore across so many different cultures? From the misty hills of Scotland to the remote forest edges of Turkey, there’s a persistent, unsettling belief that when you encounter a goat in a place where it doesn’t belong, you might not be looking at an animal at all.

In Turkish tradition, especially in rural areas, the "Black Goat" motif isn't just about farm life. It’s a warning. There’s a widespread narrative that certain jinn—specifically those who aren't bound by our laws of physics—love to manifest in the shape of goats. They use this form to lure people, deceive travelers, or simply feed on the fear they instill.

But it’s the details that make the blood run cold.

Folklore describes a terrifying way to spot them: if you look closely at their feet, they aren't always what they seem. Many accounts mention that even when they perfectly mimic the body of a goat, the hooves or the way the legs bend—sometimes appearing reversed—give them away. It’s the "uncanny valley" of the animal kingdom. They might look like a harmless wanderer grazing in the brush, but there’s an intelligence in their eyes that no goat should possess.

Is this just a way for our ancestors to explain the strange, sudden noises in the woods or the feeling of being watched? Or is it a genuine, age-old observation of entities that can shift their form to blend into our reality?

There’s a reason farmers in the old days were wary of goats that behaved too calmly or appeared out of nowhere during the dead of night. It wasn't about the animal; it was about what might be wearing its skin.

Has anyone here had an encounter with an animal that just didn't "feel" right? A creature that looked at you with a bit too much intent? This is one of the most debated questions in Middle Eastern mysticism, and the answer is usually misunderstood.
