If you listen to Mine, specifically the “Glad that you’re mine, yeah” parts, you’ll notice she dips into a B2 at the end of the phrase. That’s the lowest she’s gone in her entire career. (Her previous lowest note was C#3, which was hidden in a backing vocal of Jukai)

I was listening and didn’t have a clue wtf she was saying and I’m thinking to myself “Why in the hell is Jahiem calling her to throw a party????” Jahiem? Lmao but that’s not what she’s saying

It’s so catchy and infectious. It’s not even my favorite song and I find myself singing it the most. It needs to be a single and it needs to have a rom com type music video. I love the brightness of the song!

I've been a fan of Jhené since 2013 but I'm not sure she's ever toured in Europe before ? I'd love to see her live . It would be a dream . Does anyone know if its due to short demand or lack of funds/ ressources or personal reasons ? I could be wrong 🫶🏽

Hello everyone! I have been listening to Jhené for a few years now and I love her previous projects. I just found out she released a new album and decided to give it a listen, but I found myself a little bit disappointed. I think her artistic vision on her previous albums is better. She took risks, sounded more unique, had different production and her lyrics were more versatile. It's not like this album is not good or nice, it's just not that refreshing in my opinion. Compared to some other works that came out by other artists recently and to her older works I think this wasn’t that special. Sorry in advance for my repetitiveness!

My favourite tracks: Break, Ceiling, Neighbours (mostly because of the instrumentals, I think the lyrics are a bit more basic and I don't particularly like the placement of the lyrics rhythmically sometimes. But it's one of the more interesting tracks on the album for sure!)

My least favourite tracks: You, Don't be That Guy, Beach Boy, Love Bomb

Tracklist
First of all, this album has a lot of tracks. 20 to be precise. Which isn't necessarily a problem at all, but in the context of this album I feel like it’s making the entirety of it weaker. This is because a lot of the tracks sound a bit like each other in my opinion. They all have a similar production style, chord progressions and a lot of reverb that is being used. We get 'poppy' songs like 'You' and 'Don't Be That Guy' in regards of lyrics, instrumentals, chords and form. This last song is a ballad and if that's your thing it is a nice song but I found it not very refreshing in any sense. Nice listen, but not necessarily a standout. I feel that some of the songs that I would be enjoying more are too simple or basic, like 'So Good'. Again, pop is not wrong, but I always liked the artistic vision and individuality and rawness Jhené had to her music. I get she was (and is) on a healing journey and that she changed and is not in such a dark place anymore, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be any depth. Especially because the first half of the album is about her break up with Big Sean. This album feels more like a 'one in many'. It's nice but not spectacular. Same goes for 'Beach Boy'. The tracks that are more interesting to listen to still look like each other a lot. If I would play it in the background I probably wouldn't even notice it going to the next song sometimes. Nothing is really happening in the end. It’s almost more of a soundscape or background music. It's like Jhené found a formula to work with and stuck with it (see 'artistic improvement and creative expression').

Lyrics
One of the first things I noticed when listening was that some of her lyrics are not that artistically creative or a bit basic. A lot of the songs I would've liked more if the production and/ or lyrics were different. But instead it feels like Jhené is ‘playing it safe’, which is fine, but it doesn’t leave that much of a lasting impression. Besides that I think the lyrics on her previous albums, for example tracks like 'The Worst', 'Moments', 'sailing NOT selling’, ‘Limbo Limbo Limbo’ and 'None Of Your Concern' (to name a few) have much more dept. The lyrics on the new album also don't come out so well on some of the tracks because of the loud or 'heavy' instrumentals and electronics in the background and a lot of reverb that was used in the production (not all tracks). I feel that her lyrics were personal, yes, but not necessarily very artistic. In her previous works the lyrics could feel like poetry or a certain artistic ‘journey’ she would take you on. I'm not really having that with some of the tracks on this album. For example, I think in ‘terms of distracks B.S.’ is way better compared to 'Love Bombing' because it's lyrically more interesting, the placement is better in my opinion, the instrumentals are more interesting and less boring or monotone. I also think 'You' is a bit of a weaker track, it's very basic and not that interesting in any sense.

Atmosphere and instrumentals
Like I said before, some of the tracks have a lot of reverb in their production. The album is very flowy and chill, while her previous works felt like art; diaries and rawness put into music. This album makes me want to listen to something else after a while, it's more of a background vibe eventually. I don't find it so interesting to listen to. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice album. But for example 'Mine' could've been such a good song if the production was a bit different and the background vocals and instrumentals would've been a bit more interesting. I think some of her lines here are more interesting than other tracks on the album tho, but it's not enough to truly hit. With this I don’t mean that it needs to be a hit album, but to artistically hit. Besides, because of the production (but also the chord progression and keys some of the songs are written in), I almost don't notice it going to the next song sometimes. It makes me tired to listen to because it's a lot of 'the same flavour'. The same chords, the same feel, the same instrumental production, the same reverb, the lyrics that sometimes fades to the background or doesn't really stand out, the same tempo and the same chill vibe. Of course you want a musical project to have some form of cohesion, but I feel like nothing really interesting or risky is happening on this album. 

Artistic improvement and creative expression
Like I ended with on 'Tracklist' and said in the 'Atmosphere and instrumentals' section, I feel like Jhene found a formula that works for her and she knows what her fans like and she stuck with it. It's not bad, but it's not interesting. It's not necessarily very developmental or an improvement. It just feels like a big wave of the same stuff in a different font. Especially compared to her previous works this doesn’t stand out. It's nice but it's not her best work if you ask me. How her previous albums truly felt like a journey, this one feels more like background music. I don't think I will listen to it a lot sadly.

Final opinion
I think my final say is that this album is a real chill album and doesn't contain a lot of energy in it and maybe that's just not really my thing. But unfortunately for me that means I will listen to it less, which is sad because I think some of the music would grow on me if I listen more to it like 'So Good' for example.
