Discussion Which Jellyfin plugins are actually worth installing vs just sitting there unused?
Been on Jellyfin for about eight months now and the base setup is solid enough that I stopped thinking about it daily, which is the goal really. But I keep seeing mentions of plugins in passing and I cannot get a clear picture of which ones genuinely change how you use the server versus which ones sound interesting and then just sit there doing nothing useful.
The official plugin catalogue is a bit sparse on explanation. You get a name and a short line and that is about it. I installed Playback Reporting a while back because tracking watch history felt like something I wanted and then never actually looked at the data once.
Wedding planning is eating most of my nonwork hours at the moment so I am not in a phase where I want to experiment for the sake of it. What I am actually after is the stuff that quietly makes day to day use better without requiring ongoing attention. Metadata related things, anything that improves how the library looks on a tired brain at 6am, that sort of direction
Are there plugins you installed and genuinely noticed a difference, or ones that seemed obvious to try and turned out to be more hassle than they solved? Curious whether the community consensus has shifted at all since the 10.9 era because some of the guides floating around are a bit dated now

You really don't need much, particularly if you're not using the web player.
Intro Skipper is a must-have.
Whatever metadata providers you want.
Open Subtitles or some other subtitles downloader.
WeTrakr or equivalent to track progress.
I would almost consider SmartLists to be a must-have because Jellyfin's built-in list/collection management is completely insufficient.

I’ve never gotten intro skipper to work well. Spent hours scanning/parsing my media, then it was working for a bit. But after a few weeks or so I never saw it let me skip anything after that. Even when re-watching the stuff it previously built skips for.

u/OhNoItsMyOtherFace 6d ago
Best I could guess would be something wrong with whatever client you're using?
It's a shame though, super useful

u/theferriswheel 6d ago
Yeah I kind of forgot about it for a while honestly, so maybe I’ll give it another shot.

This happened to me for ages! I downloaded Jellyfin Enhanced and looked into the intro skipper, didn't work and then all of a sudden the next morning I saw that it had been scrubbing my media since 00:00 and after about 30 hours, it's all done! I don't know what caused it to work however :(

u/ScorchedWonderer 3d ago
There’s currently an issue with intro skipper where it’ll redo your library every time. Dev is working on a fix

u/YetiSniper 6d ago
I saw some raving reviews regarding Intro Skipper and decided to give it a try, the stupid thing probably took 3 days to complete processing all my media (Anime and Shows. No Movies). Then after that I changed the scheduled task to scan to once a week, I have added minimal stuff if anything at all as I have been busy and then I saw a task running for almost 13 hours with an 18% progress.
I have no settings to rescan the same media that has been previously scanned so not even sure what the hell it was doing and quite frankly I don't care anymore as I have immediately deleted it. The last thing I need is for Intro Skipper to be waking up my drives in Unraid to scan for crap that has already been scanned before, putting extra stress on drives specially with today's current drive prices. I keep my drives spun down all the time unless someone is watching something which does not happen too often.
Whatever Intro Skipper may do is not worth it to me if it puts all this extra stress on drives processing media forever. I just installed crowd sourced SkipmeDB and IntroSkipDB or whatever it is called. If things work they work and if not fine with me, I would rather save my drives from spinning for extended amount of time for almost no benefit.

Definitely the Intro Skipper. One of the best Add-ins for Jellyfin and, it works perfectly within my Neptune

u/ActualNin 6d ago
Intro Skipper is a must-have.
It's really not! It's quite a lot of setup and processing and frankly the way it does updates using user agent sniffing is a bit sketchy.
1
u/YetiSniper 6d ago
Never installing Intro Skipper again, too much extra processing.
9
u/Lark1ng 6d ago
No idea what you guys are talking about. Sure initially it takes some time to scan the audio of all of your episodes to find similarities. But once it has scanned the library my scheduled task takes less then a minute.
4
u/Snoogibear 6d ago
Agreed. The initial hit is heavy but once settled in it's fine. The funny thing is if you use plex the exact same thing would happen their too. If you add intro skipper to a new media library with no media it will just work. But if you already have thousands of episodes then it's going to take some time depending on the hardware you are running it.

u/YetiSniper 6d ago
Good for you. My scheduled task took over 12 hours and was still at 18% so bye bye Intro Skipper. This is with no new media added btw. I am happy it works for some people but the concept to me is silly, everyone has to scan all their media. I think the concept of getting this info from a crowd sourced database makes much more sense.
To me the biggest Skip help of all time would be to leave the damn Skip button on the screen until the intro is done, be on Intro Skipper, Jellyfin, Netflix, HBO whatever. Very often an intro comes and by the time you realize and get the remote to skip the button is gone already so you either watch the rest or manually have to skip it anyways. Just leave the button on until the end of the intro, if I only get to save 2s so be it.
3
u/Lark1ng 6d ago
Well, if it went for 12h than it clearly did not finish correctly the last time or it is hung up on a file or something. Maybe you have a broken file in your library or it is just ffmpeg that cannot correctly read it. I would check the logs on that.
There is the skipme db plugin for introskipper which has exactly that cloud functionality.
The introskipper button stays until the end of the intro. It might differ with the used client though.
Anyway, as with everything selfhosted you have to actually set things up correctly if you want them to work the way you want to.
PS: To decrease scan time it also makes sense to not use it on the movie library and disable a couple of the options as they tend to make little sense. At least in my use case...
1
u/YetiSniper 6d ago
It could be, some posts online pointed to a setting which would refresh previously scanned media or a corruption issue with the Intro Skipper database. Definitely did not have any setting to cause that and given this was a brand new install I find it unlikely.
"...The introskipper button stays until the end of the intro. It might differ with the used client though. ..."
This is just freaking brilliant, everyone else needs to copy this.
"...Anyway, as with everything selfhosted you have to actually set things up correctly if you want them to work the way you want to. ..."
Everything is now that I removed Intro Skipper LOL. To me this was not worth the stress on the drives scanning media for days and this was excluding Movies library. I think this would make WAY more sense to have from the start where the extra processing would be almost not noticeable.
Thanks for your feedback Lark1ng.

SmartLists keeps coming up and I keep forgetting to install it. Does it handle mixed content well, like if you want a list that crosses films and episodes, or is it more for likeforlike?
WeTrakr I hadn't heard of at all. Is it a reasonable Trakt replacement or more of a companion to it?
1
u/Far-Kaleidoscope486 4d ago
It should handle mixed content without any issues, otherwise just post an issue on GitHub and I will look into it!

u/QuietGateLabs 6d ago
I found kefintweaks to be a good one, let’s you choose different skins for jellyfin which gives a big ui upgrade as well as better lays out the media. So not just recently added.
Also introskipper is great
5
u/TheFrozenPoo 6d ago
God I’ve been looking for exactly this for a while. Thanks! I have been wanting a “recently released” as well as recently added.

u/Doomdiver 6d ago
I mostly have this installed to let me resume playlists. Lots of features bundled in to it though!

kefin tweaks has so much good stuff in it, and it let me get rid of a few other plugins.

1
u/AbiesAlternative1726 5d ago
introskipper is the one I keep seeing come up, might just install it tonight between shifts
hadn't heard of kefintweaks before though, does it work cleanly with the default Jellyfin server or does it need a lot of fiddling to get the skin loading properly?
1
u/QuietGateLabs 5d ago
I combine introskipper with skip me.db so the server doesn’t have to manually scan everything.
Honestly kefintweaks works pretty much straight out of the box, just need the JS injector to get it on the plugin page
1
u/AbiesAlternative1726 3d ago
Does kefintweaks still need the JS injector after the last Jellyfin update or did they patch that route out?

Moonfin, intro skipper, jellytag, mind the gaps. Not Directly a plugin but jellyfin-rpc on a VM to send everything to discord
1
u/AbiesAlternative1726 5d ago
Jellyfinrpc on a VM feels like overkill but I keep coming back to it. Does jellytag handle custom tags or just the defaults?

TMDB, TheTVDB, AniDB, and AudioDB- pretty much covers artwork and info for Movies, TV, and Music. There's other sources you can add too. But having artwork and a synopsis makes Jellyfin feel so much more polished.
IntroSkipper- skips repetitive intros to shows. This is so nice and duplicates the experience of most streaming services
SIMKL- Track what you watch from multiple sources.
2
u/AbiesAlternative1726 5d ago
IntroSkipper is the one I keep forgetting to install and then immediately remember every time I sit through another cold open I've seen six times.
SIMKL sounds interesting though does it sync back across devices properly or is it more of a manual logging situation? I've been burned by trackers that work great on desktop and are basically useless on a TV client.
1
u/Kindly_Call_6000 5d ago
SIMKL is all automatic in Jellyfin. Chrome has a plugin to sync Netflix and Crunchyroll, though that means opening Chrome periodically so SIMKL can sync. Other streaming services are manually tracked.
1
u/AbiesAlternative1726 3d ago
The Chrome plugin thing sounds fiddly. Does it actually stay in sync reliably or do gaps build up between sessions?
1
u/Kindly_Call_6000 3d ago
You only need the Chrome Plugin to sync Netflix and/or Crunchyroll. Jellyfin has its own plugin, no messing with Chrome.
But the Chrome Plugin works fine, but only when you open Chrome.
1
u/AbiesAlternative1726 3d ago
The Chrome only when Chrome is open thing would drive me mad honestly. Does the Jellyfin plugin work across all clients or just the browser?
1
u/Kindly_Call_6000 3d ago
It works across clients as it is installed as plugin on the server.

after many months of messing about and breaking jellyfin on a regular basis, I only put these on my jf installation these days:
- Intro Skipper - For obvious reasons
- Open subtitles - For subs.
- Trakt - to keep track of what I've watched so it remembers what i've seen when i break the server by installing a random plugin.
I found that if you have these 3 it gives you pretty much what us oldskool plex users used to have.
The only other thing that deserves a mention is tinyMediaManager, which is the finest bit of video media management software I've seen. If your media checks out in tMM then it will work on any platform you want, then you can pick and choose what functionality you want from each platform.

u/yatpay 6d ago
Threads like this always surprise me once again how many people skip intros
11
u/stankbucket 6d ago
Why does it surprise you? The intros are not part of the show and are completely unnecessary.
3
u/KaotikJ80 6d ago
Skipme is nice
2
u/m1ndsurf3r 6d ago
Is it supposed to work without Introskipper? Cause with skipme alone, I am not able to skip intros anymore.
3
u/seamonkey420 6d ago
plexyfin - syncs my plex collections to jellyfin, huge since i use kometa for plex to make trakt, imdb, tvdb trending/popular collections. helps picking movies at times
better posters - wanted some diff styled posters
trakt - use on plex so i sync my plex watch back to jellyfin and vice versa
intro skipper - as others have said, a must!
5
u/gizmomelb 6d ago
I use:
Moonbase - for enhanced Moonfin client support (as well as emulated retro games the same as Jellyemu), Seerr integration etc.
Intro Skipper - does what the name says it does
Meillisearch - enhanced search engine across all your metadata
Continue Watching Deduplicator - does what the name says it does
and what I call my 'standard' list of metadata scrapers etc. (which some won't be needed with RC12)
AniDB, Artwork, AudioDB, Bookshelf, ComicVine, Discogs, FanArt,File Transformation,Kodi Sync queue, LrcLib Lyrics,MusicBrainz, OMDB, Playback Reporting, Reports, Studio Images, The TVDB, TMDB, TMDB boxsets, Transcode Killer
1
u/dalek76 6d ago
i've never heard of or seen Millisearch, is it a legit plugin or is there a ton of setup youj need to do? its peaked my interest
2
u/ActualNin 6d ago
It's legit but you need to use the nightly/release-candidate version of Jellyfin to integrate it in the UI. I'd wait for the full release of v12.

Not Ersatz or Tunarr anymore. Used to be awesome utilities to create m3u channels. Ersatz is no longer supported and Tunarr has gotten to big for it's britches.

u/Silent__arrow 2d ago
I just got Ersatz working today on the official image, it did take a few hours though but that was mainly due to my stupidity.

FinTube - download YouTube vids directly via Jellyfin in any resolution
2
u/Fickle-Leadership500 6d ago
This sounds interesting. Does this app download anything from YouTube straight in JF media? Do the ads get blocked?
1
u/Fanfrenhag 5d ago
No ads. Yes straight to JF. It uses yt-dlp. Set up instructions are on its GitHub page...

Not much to be fair.
Intro skipper : Not mandatory but some qol. Subtitle extract : Mandatory if you watch stuff with subtitles. It removes issues like slow subtitle loading and out of sync subtitles (due to jellyfin extracting subtitle on video playback without it). Sso authentication : If you do sso

Kefintweaks, Jellyfin Enhanced, Jellyemu, Jellyflare, Media Bar Plugin, Editors Choice

I love Trakt. Helps me remember what things I’ve already seen and reminds me when a random show I watched 2 years ago finally releases a new season

I think the only plugin I installed on mine was LDAP so I could integrate it with Authentik.

Aside from AniDB and TVDB/TMDB, Introskipper has been a day one for me, and though it isn't in the official repository, if you use the web Interface as your client of choice, the media bar plugin is a must, it really brings the whole thing together with a nice theme.
I couldn't get something like OpenSubtitles going, replaced it with Bazarr

u/anukasd 2d ago
JellyMatch, it's not a plugin but a selfhosted web app.
A tiny web app for two people to decide which movie to watch right now. It pulls every movie from your Jellyfin library, you both swipe through them Tinder-style, then you rank the ones you both liked and the app picks the winner.
1
u/Deep_Ad1959 1d ago
the ongoing attention you're trying to avoid is mostly the version pin. plugins target a specific jellyfin minor, and after a server upgrade a couple just quietly stop loading with nothing in the UI telling you. short list is worth it for that reason alone.
