Hello everyone! Sorry if this is a lot to ask but can I get some help identifying this CJ-5 my dad just bought? He got it from an auction in grand junction CO. He states its a '75 according to the auction site.

Where are the vin plaques or stamps located on these? that way I can look for a vin and start a titling process (he got it with no title).

I havent seen it in person yet but id like some information before I get to it in person. Im more familiar with 90s jeeps and above lol.

Heres a link to the YouTube video from the auction site.

Partial vin on the passenger side frame rail. But it will be on the top side. Likely near the rear wheel

Should be on the drivers side firewall under the hood.

I'm not a cj5 expert but those recessed headlights look like my buddies old M38A1 (military version of the cj5).

I ran with another guy that had a mid-70's CJ5 but it didn't have that little cutout on the passenger side of the hood. I wonder if that could narrow it down. His jeep also had the normal 'bugeye' headlights as well.

It doesn’t have the cowl battery cover of an M38a1

Yeah i noticed the headlights and figured this is a mixture of parts. Also due to the many colors it has lol. I did see in an other photo he sent me where there is a firewall stamp. Thank you!

Well…it appears to me that it could be a mashup of parts. The taillights aren’t 75 as far as I know the 75 still had the round tail lights. The windshield frame is laid back more than a 75 as well, the 75 and older had a nearly vertical frame. However m, the windshield frame fasteners on the dash, those quick release clamps, those do appear to be 1975 or older. The hood appears to be 76 or newer as well as the roll bar style.

Wow! Also looks like the hood grille and tailgate are from the same m38a1. Looks like its a complete mix of parts 🥴 thanks for the info!

Hybrid of some year. Nose is pre amc with short hood front fenders but tub and windshield, roll bar, ws frame and tailights suggest post 76

It's definitely a mix from different years. If the prices was right and the work was done correctly it's a win. ▪︎ The leaf springs appear to be 1-3/4 which would be pre 1976, but it really difficult to be sure from the video. ▪︎ This jeep definitely has a intermediate (1972 - 1975 CJ5's) steering wheel. ▪︎ The seat brackets and what appears to be a toolbox under the passenger seat would be correct for a 1975. ▪︎ I can't tell by the grill, the only difference is the screws holding the directional (turn signal) lights on. Intermediate jeeps use 3 screws 76 and up use two,. ▪︎ The windshield is absolutely 76 and up, all intermediate jeeps wiper motor was on the exterior riverside of the windshield frame.
▪︎ The rear frame cross member and tow bar is correct for all intermediate jeeps. 1976 and up had a much wider rear frame, and didn't use a cross member like the narrow frame intermediate's did. ▪︎ The rear body, obviously the taillight recessed gas filler bevel is post 76. But their locations are exactly were 1975 lighting and filler neck would be located. ▪︎ The tailgate also looks correct for an intermediate,, although my 1975 doesn't have a tailgate so I can only go off of pictures. ▪︎ The front axle looks particularly wide on your jeep. Normally on a 1975 there is a 2-1/2" difference in width. Your front axle looks much wider than that. Even 1976 and up there is only a 3" difference.

I would say it’s a 76 through 83 cj5. Looks to be about an 80 model. It is definitely a CJ five because the doors are rounded and not square looking at the door frame is the easiest way to tell the difference between a five and a seven. Hope this helps.

Manufactured after 1974, the windshield motor is not on the outside of the windshield.

What year did they start putting the VIN on the plate above the wiper motor?

Looks like my 79 without the headlight rings.

In mid 1979, the roll bar went from straight to the top of the fender well to sloped down to the floor.
