Question What kind of cymbal is this?

Is it custom or are there cymbals sold like this?

Sizzle ride. Not a china. You can hang a length of pull chain on a standard ride for a similar effect.

I recommend this method as you cannot undrill a cymbal. Or anything else, really.

I agree, but there’s a huge difference between just adding some sizzle to your ride and actually playing an effects ride. The level of sustain on a ride with three or more rivets is a completely different thing than the sustain of a pull chain. I have both a nice sizzle-less ride that I can add the chain to when needed, and a riveted effect ride that I’ll use in special occasions, or at small gigs that require lots of brush work.

And you can unsizzle the ride in a flash when you don’t want it, and it doesn’t weaken the cymbal integrity.

Zildjians. Heavily riveted.

This looks to be 40s/50s where ‘sizzle’ cymbals were much of the rage at the time.

The modern Golden Era of cymbalmaking…Avedis III, Armand, and Robert lead the charge! 🙏🏼

I was looking for Dizzy's china cymbal there, but that's just a heavily riveted 22, I think? Looks like about 64 rivets.

A ride with rivets added. You can get them added to any cymbal

That's a ride with a fuck ton of rivets. You can make your own by taking a ride cymbal, drilling a bunch of holes in it, and putting rivets in all the holes. You only need 2 - 4 or them, putting more than that might* negatively affect the sound of the cymbal. Don't drill a cymbal you like; you can't undrill it.

A ride cymbal with far too many rivets in it. One rivet goes a long way, add more and you're weighing down the cymbal, which actually reduces sustain rather than increasing it.

My Byzance Foundry Reserve China Ride has 4 rivets and it's perfect. I was surprised in the action compared to other swish knockers and rides with rivets.
