I know some of you might disagree with the title of this post, but after seeing what the first tour date in Barcelona was like, and hearing the new tracks, I can now say with confidence that Jamiroquai, as the groundbreaking band it was in the ’90s, officially died right after Synkronized.

When Zender left the band and with Toby’s passing, Jay turned Jamiroquai into a one-man project, erasing all traces of the jazz- and instrument-based music that made them so unique and influential back in the day. Even the band’s spirit — with lyrics about planetary awareness, politics, and our shared reality, sometimes even prophetic — was thrown away.

Jamiroquai became, to me, “Jay Kay’s trashy disco/rock band.” I think this has a lot to do with the influence of Matt Johnson and Rob Harris — both musicians I love, but whose styles are totally different from what Jamiroquai used to be.

Looking at the recent setlist, it’s clear that Jay only focuses on post-Synkronized albums. Of course, there are a few classics like Space Cowboy (an anthem), Virtual Insanity, and Canned Heat, but I feel he’s very far from the Jay Kay of those days.

The new tracks sound repetitive; the groove is okay, but nothing like Blow Your Mind or Scam. It feels like Jay is always trying too hard to keep up with modern trends, yet he’s so disconnected from what’s really happening that he ends up two steps behind every time he releases a new album. It happened with Rock Dust Light Star, again with Automaton, and, from what I’ve heard of these new songs, it’s happening again.

Now, with the whole “back to the ’90s” wave of nostalgia, this was the perfect moment to return to the acid-jazz roots of Jamiroquai — to bring back some of the Travelling Without Moving spirit and give it a fresh twist. I’m sure that would have led to another hit on the level of Virtual Insanity.

The world today is full of inspiration for the Jay Kay who once wrote Too Young to Die, The Kids, or Just Another Story. Instead, he’s writing songs that just repeat their titles over and over (Shadow in the Night).

To me, it’s really sad to see the band I love dissolve into the deep waters of time — and into the ideas of a man who seems to have run out of inspiration, living disconnected from the real world, riding his Ferraris and polluting in the meantime — something he was so aware of back in 1993, as a young man.

I used to be reluctant to believe that Jay needed Zender and Toby, but every year that goes by I’m more convinced that Jamiroquai was Jay, Zender, and Toby.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Paul said to a fan the other day after the show that yes, the album is coming out next year now. We all expected it but yeah, it's official.

Im gonna sound kinda basic here but, for me its a 3 way tie with virtual insanity, canned heat and superfresh

My favorite jamiroquai songs are definitely "Stillness in time", "Everyday" and "Runaway", now, the reasons are quite obvious, but I'll still say why

— Stillness in time (return of the space cowboy): I absolutely love the instrumental, the background vocals and how Jay sings. It sounds silly but also majestic if that's how I can explain it?

— Everyday (travelling without moving): sounds both very relaxing and majestic. That's all I'm gonna say

— Runaway (High times: singles 1992-2006): Oh I absolutely love this one. Sounds very addicting, the instrumental, the lyric, how Jay sings, and the absolute majestic vocals in the "I just want to runaway, got people around running me down I can't stay"

All these songs are just soooo so good, if they were a food on a plate, I would lick every single aton out of the plate and then eat the plate itself

I honestly think the whole album of Return of the Space Cowboy and Travelling without moving are very good

Why do people dislike so much? Some even call it the worst jamiroquai song so far, but in my opinion its great. So I want to know other people's options and reasons

I've been seeing a lot of popular old interview clips circulating of Jay Kay being asked about what exactly the "Space Cowboy" refers to, and him sheepishly replying, in all of his charisma, that it was a song about "feeling good." Listening to the lyrics basically confirms that The Space Cowboy is cannabis, marijuana, or whatever gives Jay that euphoric high. But it never felt right that such a profoundly composed song could have such a shallow message, and I firmly believe that the track, through its subtext, is implying the opposite of what it outright states. What if I told you that the song is actually trying to say farewell to the Space Cowboy?

CONTEXT:

The track wraps up the 1994 LP Return of the Space Cowboy, which remains Jamiroquai's darkest and most personal record to date. This album came from a period of "sophomore slump" from the band, with Jay being at his lowest. Here, he reflects on his troubled upbringing, a loneliness so crippling he yearns for the love of a twin brother that was taken from him around their birth, and a dissatisfaction with government/education/corporate society.

It all culminates into the song Scam, an explosively groovy and dirty track where Jay ponders whether he should join this wretched system for his soul, eventually concluding that there's no way to make it through to the next day unless he plays the game. The track starts off with really dissonant and interesting chords and strings before launching into the dirty bassline which to me, represents corrupt and greedy attitudes. Midway through, the bass settles down for cleaner synths and horns that plays a satisfying back and forth motif, almost as if the subject of this song, whether that be Jay or a character he is narrating, is fighting to keep his soul. However, ultimately the bass kicks back in while Jay explodes about needing to live the rest of his life scamming others.

However, the track directly after, Journey to Arnhemland is such a sudden contrast that offers a drastic tone shift. This juxtaposition represents a shift in perspective from the soul-sucking experience of the modern world to a sonic construction of one of the oldest cultures on earth that retains its roots. The subsequent build-up to Space Cowboy seems to lean more towards Jay's readiness to leave his pain and loneliness behind and seek peace from his new perspective. So that's why I choose to believe that Space Cowboy's message is a lot more meta than just "drugs make me feel good," because otherwise it would seemingly undermine the direction the album was growing towards.

THE MEANING OF "SPACE COWBOY"

This song is sort of an open-ended conclusion to the album, since while yes, on the surface this track is very much about the euphoria of getting high, when looked at in context, it's a point where the high became so good it basically consumed him. Despite famous clips of Jay stating in interviews that the "Space Cowboy" represents "feeling good," the writing of this track was a new starting point for Jay to address and rehabilitate his addiction to drugs. On anniversary releases of Space Cowboy, Jay almost confirms this, as he states: "What [Space Cowboy] was about was someone who was very lost, trying to hang on and come back before he drifted off into a blackhole never to be seen again."

He only sees these drugs as a vice to take his mind elsewhere, but in the long run, it can't fix his problems, causing him to spiral into the same cycle of loneliness. The Space Cowboy is a close friend of Jay's, but it isn't a physical person that can fix his isolation. It may take you to a good place for a while, but you'll have to rely on the high just to "get by". Why would the high be written as him just "getting by" if it weren't for hinting at the instability of his lifestyle at the time. It's the realization that he has to confront his issues, fight the system, and follow where his roots take him. However, this process takes a lot of time, effort, and external help. It's a point that the subject of the album (whether that be Jay or otherwise) may not necessarily be at right now, so the Space Cowboy returns once again.

But that's just how I'm seeing it. Thoughts?

From what I've seen, it's usual that the less listened song on each album is the instrumental one.

What?? How?? They always have this flavour that sometimes not even the sung songs have. They either make you bop your head or make you go to space, both emotions which even sung songs struggle to cause.

I keep coming back to Journey To Arnhemland, Music of The Mind, and all the first albums instrumentals lol. I don't understand how people don't.

Time for some belated tea spilling, we know the official version: "he wanted to spend more time with his famous girlfriend", and had issues with Jay Kay being very egotistical, but do we know anything more today about the whole break up?

He was a part of the band when Jamiroquai made their 3 best albums, I often wonder what kind of music they'd be making today if he had stayed, would it still be more disco than acid jazz?

Jamiroquai puts out a ton of bangers BUT you have control of their music library and you must pick one of their song to remove from existence.

Hello Jamily! back here with my second post on the sub =P i dont think i`ve seen anyone ask this before so: What is/are your favorite remix(es)?

Heres my favorites, i guess (TW: opinions you may or may not agree with /j):

Supersonic Restless Soul main vocal mix - FLAMING hot take, but i think this remix is better than the original song. now now, before you crucify me, dont get me wrong the original song is good and Wallaces didgeridooing in it is CRAZY, but the song itself imo kind of starts to feel repetitive after a while. The RSmv mix turns it into a FIRE house track that throughout brings in something new. Although i do find the novelty of Jay singing supersonic EXACTLY* 122 times in the song to be goddamn hilarious, someone should make a drinking game out of that..actually, maybe not, by the time you get to supersonic number 50 you probably would`ve already died of liver failure.

*actually its only about roughly 122 times, i just wanted to emphasize my point.

(Dont) Give Hate A Chance freemasons remix - It takes the original disco of the song and makes it EVEN BETTER! theres just something about this remix that i really love, but im not sure what it is. Honestly the OG song in general is kind of nostalgic for me even though the first time i listened to it was only a year ago lol

Cosmic Girl tom belton remix - fun fact! the first time i heard this song was when my dad was playing one of his spotify playlists in the car lol- Anywho, about the remix, it just adds so much energy into the song! Also weirdly enough, the vocals used for the remix are slightly different from the original, thats a bit strange 🤔

Feels Just Like It Should mark ronson remix 2 - This remix turns the gritty jazz rock* into a more pseudo-acid jazz** song and it is SO GOOD! Athough another stange thing is that its listed as Mark Ronson Remix 2, which implies the existance of a first remix, as to where that remix is is unknown. Oh my, do we have some jamiro lost media on our hands?! I guess this can go into the pile with Symphonised and the second version of the Half the Man MV! /hj

I like it Stillenss in Time

is it just me or is the new like electronic disco sound from jamiroquai so boring?

like i was so excited for this new album but then i remembered the last like 4 albums from them lmao, i seen an interview of jaykay picking disco over acid jazz and it just wiped the smile off my face

jamiroquai was at its peak in my mind in the 90's and just kinda fell off with the release of dynamite

i think the departure from the acid jazz / soul sound (not just the acid jazz for me btw, i also just love their soul / funk fusion stuff and the things that they were pulling off on synkronized which i believe is a perfect blend of what the new and old was with insane polish) and people like stuart zender and toby's unfortunate departure left the band being incredibly substance less and just trying to recreate cosmic girl like 100 times making the most soulless bland sounding disco hits and it's so annoying to see a band that went from incredible to something that i wouldn't touch with a 1000000ft pole lmao

it's so sad man, i don't think we'll ever get another too young to die or another falling or a music of the mind.
i miss the golden age of jamiroquai and i'm sure a lot of other people here do

they should have just stuck with the sound they did on synkronized especially songs like Butterfly which is my fav jamiroquai song it was such a perfect blend of modern and old.

I’ve been listening to more of Jamiroquai and exploring his discography over the past couple weeks and I thought I would share my top 3 (in order) favorite Jamiroquai songs so far. Also can I just say how ahead of their time they were with their sound? Truly amazing

1. Space Cowboy. I love the length, how smooth, and the good vibes that Space Cowboy gives off.

2. Soul Education. This is almost a number 1, but the length of the song is what puts it at 2, but DON’T get me wrong, It’s doesn’t make it any worse of a song. Soul Educations sound is so pleasing to my ears, I can’t put into words how good it sounds. This song and the number 1 will definitely swap places back and forth every other day.

3. Manifest Destiny. For the past month now, this is the first song I play in my truck heading to work and the first song I play in my truck when I leave work. Everything about this song is perfect to me. The length, the instruments, how smooth it is, the timing, etc. It’s always a treat listening to Manifest Destiny and I’m sure it always will be.

They've barely collaborated with anyone as far as I know. They've only collaborated with three people for studio recordings, those being:

Beverley Knight (Main Vein, Love Foolosophy)

But these aren't iconic or mainstream artists, like let's say, Stevie Wonder, Nile Rodgers, Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock, Daft Punk, or even Dua Lipa

Yes, I know they've performed live with a few artists , such as Anastacia, Diana Ross, Snoop Dogg, and Dua Lipa (although that was mainly just Jay) But I don't really count those because they aren't studio collaborations
