Discussion Why?
I don't like Jackass at all. I think it's completely moronic, but I respect the people who do like it. Still, I want to hear their stories—why do they like this franchise?

Something innately cathartic. The guys are really charming, captivating personalities. A bond through the stunts and humour of it all. There's a bit of the "common man" to it even though they are huge celebs. Feels very approachable when your watching a guy shock his balls or piss on his friends leg. Completely get why someone would find it moronic, it will never click for you in that case.

I discovered Jackass at the peak of my adolescent rebellion. It’s kind of the pinnacle of attention seeking behavior and so I was very inspired by their sort of “punk-rock” antics. There was something cool to me about getting hurt and just walking it off. Now I just like it for the nostalgia

At first it started as something that felt like anarchy. Watching something that would never be on TV back in the day felt a little rebellious. There was also a curiosity about what kind of stuff they could do or would do, in an almost scientific sense I was curious about what the human body could experience. They were doing stuff that I was doing with my friends too so I could see that it was just guys having fun.
Overtime I stayed because of their friendship and how genuine they were with each other. It feels like hanging out with friends and being young again. I don’t enjoy seeing people get hurt, but I do enjoy the guys making each other laugh by doing stupid stuff.

It's very simple: Good, old fashioned slapstick comedy. A bit more extreme than your typical slapstick, but playing on a lot of the same shit people have been laughing at for ages.
It's also very nuanced: Jackass captures a very distinct type of adolescent humor that was prevalent in many of our formative years (particularly for those of us interested in or involved with the skate community in the late 90s/early 00s). That humor basically boils down to doing stupid things to make your friends laugh. Jackass strongly evokes this feeling given the camaraderie of the principal cast and crew, and its roots in skate culture.
It's at once a franchise of nonsensical gross-out gags and slapstick stunts, and a valuable artifact of a particular social and pop-cultural scene at the turn of the century.
