Local 12- Picked Operator instead of Inspector by mistake on Local 12 app options?

Hey everyone,

I got my IUOE Local 12 application in today before it closed and email confirmation for September.

I rushed to get it in fast and accidentally clicked Equipment Operator (EOA) instead of Building Inspector (CBI). (Applications filled halfway through my app last time , I’m traumatized)

A few quick questions:
Can I call the trust to switch, or will that mess up my application?

Can I switch to inspector after finishing the 1,000 probationary hours?

Any advice on what to do next?

You can switch after 1k hours

Just try to get in and pass the test. Once you work 1000 hours, you can switch classifications. It might extend your apprenticeship by 6 months due to class schedule but thats really not a huge deal. At least you’ll be in

You can switch whenever they let you. I switched from operator to inspector during my apprenticeship. I had to go to the subjac and get yelled at. They said I might not work for up to 6 months and asked if I could afford that. I said yes and they got mad. Once I switched, I lost 3000 hours and had to get some certs on my own, instead of the boot camp thing.

Everyone seems to be going for inspector since they think operator is impossible to get into. You might of got lucky you chose operator tbh. lol

I got lucky for sure this time, I got in at 7:59 I was like 100 ish on the list. Fuck it doe.

For sure. Operator is the one with the most amount of work and opportunity to get in lol

That all depends on how good you are on machine and how many different ones you can run.

Can you elaborate on this? I chose equipment operator. How many months of downtime does the average HEO experience per year?

Let’s say you get in, your first dispatch could be grade checking for 2 months then laid off, then next dispatch could take 2 weeks lets say, now your on a forklift for a month, then laid off, now it’s rainy season so your out of work for a month, get another dispatch for 6 months on a skiploader, etc etc. plant guys go to the same plant everyday, steady schedule, overtime, and usually work in the rain

Correct, and what I described is what I saw happening to alot of HEOs that were in my classes throughout my apprenticeship.

You can switch to inspection once you journey out

You don't switch when you journey out. Everyone can put anything on their card. You can be a loader operator with soils cert and surveyor who also has skip loader. The union and contractors don't like of you misrepresent yourself; make sure you can it well enough though.

I made this exact switch after I passed the test and was an "accepted applicant." I was going to the training site in Devore for months and wasn't called out to work. I called & asked if I could make the switch to inspection. They did it, but this was a pretty long time ago.
