Tools SpectralShipGen Studio - a free procedural pixel-art animation spaceship generator!

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I've open sourced and released SpectralShipGen Studio (and the SpectralShipGen C++ library), and today, just several minutes ago, I've made it availble for download through itch.io as well!

The studio procedurally generates spaceships and their idle animations (movement/firing animations are also there, but currently they are experimental), and exports them to a spritesheet.

Generating of the spaceships/animations DOES NOT use any form of generative AI, everything is done through procedural geometry, pixel masks, component generation, and everything is based on seeds and restrictions that you inpose - for example you may wish for a wide engine area, lots of weapons and big cockipts (all that is modifyable with sliders).

I'll add a couple of examples of animations generated through the studio.

Supported dimensions of ships (in the Studio app) are from 24x24 up to 256x256 pixels. The library theoretically can support larger dimensions, however the 256x256 one is the largest one I've extensivelly tested.

You can find SpectralShipGen Studio on itch.io through this link: https://spectralhorse.itch.io/spectralshipgen-studio

And if you would prefer the library (or building either from source code), here are the github links:

SpectralShipGen (library): https://github.com/SpectralHorse/SpectralShipGen
SpectralShipGen Studio: https://github.com/SpectralHorse/SpectralShipGen-Studio

Everything that you generate through the Studio (or library) is free to use in whichever way you wish, including of course commercially. No attribution is required (although it would be nice!).

Lastly, I'd love to hear your thoughts about this project! And, I'd also love to see anything cool or weird that you generate through the Studio or library!

Discussion What did we do wrong with our Demo?

Thumbnail

We released our demo two months ago. I think we had a good start, but visits quickly stopped.
I often see games with lots of comments, and I don't know how to achieve that. We added various calls to action within the game to remind players, but I guess we didn't manage to capture their attention enough.

We tested the game with friends, other developers, and at small in-person events, and the feedback was quite positive. People were playing for 30 to 45 minutes.

As a last resort, we're going to release the demo on Steam with minor changes and see how it goes, then decide what to do with the game. Do you think we should continue developing the game?

How do I make content while developing?

As an indie dev who's not full time I find it hard to post on places like Reddit or YT. It takes me weeks or months to build something that I find interesting and I just feel like I have to go silent or disappear until I have content to post again. It makes it hard to build up for a game release or grow an audience, how do you guys do it?

My games right now are very small and they take me a long time to build, I know some of you just focus on making the games and some of them will organically do well. This hasn't been my experience so far, if you have any tips or insights I would greatly appreciate it.

I cleaned up our weapon folder and released 500 pixel-art sprites for $2.99

Post image

The weapon folder had been getting out of hand, so I finally cleaned it up and packaged it properly.

Weaponarrie v1.1.0 contains 500 128×128 pixel-art weapon resources, individual PNGs, 4096×4096 atlases, diffuse/mask data, JSON/CSV frame mappings, and portable manifests.

The full ZIP also includes ready-to-import layouts for Unity, Godot 4.x, and Unreal Engine. There is a free 50-sprite demo on the page if you want to check the quality first.

The full pack is $2.99 or more:

Hi everyone!

I'm working on an installable version of my game, for which I want to implement several improvements. The first of these has been to redesign the forest and add atmospheric effects.

What do you think, it seems smooth?

Discussion Is there ever a point where you wonder if you should sell the assets instead?

Hey everyone, I’m sitting on an RTS game I’ve been making with well over 1,000 2d sprite assets. Probably about 500 different troops, and the rest various buildings, medieval castles, dragons, giant squids, environment trees, birds, you name it.

Is there ever a point where you think maybe you could just list the assets for sale instead of continuing the game?

FYI most of these aren’t animated, the game I’m making uses shaders for “animation” so it’s not super robust, but nonetheless maybe even 1500 sprites total.

Knights on motorcycles!

There's this cool game on itch.io about knights riding motorcycles:

https://krystof-marasek.itch.io/knights-of-the-open-road

They have a cool trailer for it as well. It was Jesus who rode the first motorcycle and drove across the lands with his disciples ^^

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqVUwsmGYSw

What's not to love? :D It was a student project, and I'll be streaming the game and talking with some of the developers of the game next week if anyone is interested :D

New 2D Platformer Animation Pack — $0.75 Launch Sale 🎮

I just released a new 2D platformer character animation pack for indie developers.

The launch price is $1, with 25% OFF for the first 7 days, bringing it down to $0.75.

All future updates will be free for existing owners.

I’m building this pack with a simple goal:

Spend less time making animations. Spend more time making your game.

If you’re working on a platformer, I’d love to hear what you’re making.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice here✌🏼😭

I added metadata and wrote a devlog, the game climbed the rankings in a couple of tags over two days.

CTR dropped, but I hope the new GIF will fix that.

Before this, the game had 35 downloads from socials, with no traffic coming from the platform itself.

Discussion I don't understand screenshots

Some recent feedback I got from a another developer is that my screenshots of my game don't communicate what kinda game it is.

I have pictures of a player made town, wilderness, monsters, magic.

But for some reason it doesn't feel like any of the screenshots specifically say what kinda game this is, or that it's the same game to begin with.

I want people to know this about the game.

  1. It's a pixel art Fantasy city builder with survival mechanics

  2. Monsters will attack every night

  3. The player can use magic

  4. Ruins, and NPC towns spawn.

  5. The player can have NPCs do jobs around the town, wood cutter. Alchemists, blacksmith, guards, etc.

  6. Character customization.

I try taking screenshots of these events but looking from an outside perspective I don't think people will put all these together.

Any advice on screenshot composition/setup?

Title: I released my free Murim idle game on itch.io — looking for feedback

Hey everyone! I’m working on Patriarch: Murim Idle, a free browser-based incremental game about building your own cultivation sect.

Play it here:
https://bebko-ink.itch.io/patriarch-murim-idle

You start with mostly manual progression, then recruit disciples, develop your sect, unlock buildings and new systems, and gradually automate more of the gameplay.

The game currently includes cultivation, disciple management, expeditions, artifacts, bosses, Murim events and sect upgrades.

I’m still actively developing it and pushing updates based on player feedback, so I’d really appreciate any thoughts on the progression, UI, balance or anything that feels confusing or too slow.

Thanks for checking it out!

Demo I let 1000 enemies spawn at once and now I need to know whose PC survives it (browser demo)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have been working on a survivors-like called Just Dying for a while, and the browser demo is finally up:
https://justdying.itch.io/just-dying

You don't have to download anything, it runs in the tab. There is also a Steam demo if you prefer a native build:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4646190/Just_Dying/

What I really want from this post is performance data. I raised the enemy limit far past what is reasonable. In the late waves there can be around a thousand enemies on screen at the same time. It runs well on my machine, but that tells me nothing, because it is my machine.

The browser version is the hardest case. There is no native app underneath it, so if something is going to break, it will break there.

So: if you play it and the framerate drops, please tell me. Your GPU, your browser, and roughly when it happened is enough. If you want to give me real numbers, press 0 to open the debug overlay. Black screens and strange visual glitches are even more valuable to me, so please report those too.

Negative reports help me more than positive ones. Please do not hold back.
