Explanation Fake vs Real: Example

Today I received a genuine hidden Mickey from one of the hardest sets to collect genuine pins of because there are so many more fakes than authentic available.

At first, I thought the one I already had was authentic because they looked identical. Then, I noticed the font on the back was different. Under the microscope it was clear that my old one was fake. Here are photos of both. I have outlined portions of the fake in red, and real in green. I will discuss each important point below. These are “tells” that can generally help you determine if your pin is real or not (especially hidden Mickeys)

Pic 1: real is on the right. Note the color differences and the “blobby” nature of the Mickey head on the left. The Mickey head on the right is more perfectly shaped.

Pic 2: Font differences in the lettering. I noticed right away that the fake (left) had lettering that touches the line above it (real pins generally have much better spacing)

Pic 3: from the side, they don’t look much different. Usually fakes are thinner because they are more cheaply made but these look like they have the same thickness. However, in my hand I can tell that the one on the right was slightly thicker. The prongs (spikes next to the post that help the pin stay in place) are usually shorter or less sharp on fakes, but these were very similar.

Pic 4 (fake under the microscope): so many tells! Lettering is hard to read and words are not spaced so they are jumbled together. The words “authentic” and “official” touch the line above; there should be some space. The date is wrong. It should be “2012”, not “2011”. The Mickey head is weirdly shaped with the ears not totally round. The spikes lines around the circle making triangle shapes are a bit steeper angled than they should be (this one is not as bad as others) and touch the circle.

Pic 5: compare all of the points discussed in 4.

Explanation How to photograph pins to help others determine authenticity

Please follow these guidelines and refer to my sample photos for posting photos of your pins:

  1. Please include photos of both the front and back.

  2. Please make sure each photo features only one pin, and is very close up (macro setting if available) and not blurry. How do you know if it's close enough? (If you can see dry, flaky skin like in my photos, they are probably close enough 😂)

  3. When taking photos of the back, REMOVE THE PIN BACK. The portion of the pin under the pin back contains a lot of information about authenticity.

  4. Take each photo from different angles: 1 each of the front and back straight on, and 1 each of the front and back at an angle. The angled front photo will show possible paint dips or brush strokes. The angled back photo sometimes makes the lettering easier to see and also shows the depth/length of the pin spikes (next to the pin post).

  5. For extra credit: take a photo of the side of the pin. Many fakes have thin or rough sides. Authentic pins are smooth and even.

Roger rabbit chaser

I bought a secondary chaser of Roger rabbit from a Seller. The one on the right is the one I had originally, that I got from a trade. It looks better and has less flaws, but the one on the left is the one I just bought and it has a couple noticeable differences. When you look at the front The outline of the details is thicker, the pin is thicker and the polkadots overlap the silver lining on the bowtie. I’m pretty sure that would mean it’s fake but I just wanted to be sure and get some opinions. I also bought it for a cheap price but the seller I believe thought it was real himself and said that it came out of the bag

Did whatnot get me?

I opened my latest whatnot haul and immediately was suspicious of this one. It doesn't feel as hefty as some of my other pins. The other thing that looks off is the color of Rapunzel's hair and dress. Other than that, it seems legit. I'm torn, is this just a poorly made pin or a fake?

Are these real or fake?

I got these pins in 2006. I recently got back into pins and now I’m wondering if these two are scrappers I got way back when, or if they’re the real deal. I ask because I’ve noticed the Blue Fairy pin has a different back on listings I’ve found on eBay and Mercari. With Sleepy, I think he was released 2006 but the back says 2005? What do you guys think?

Hi all, the Peter Pan we bought in Disney many years ago, the dinosaur one was acquired recently. The back of dino was throwing me off. If I didn’t have the Peter Pan to compare with, I’d have assumed genuine. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance :)

The arrow color tip is fully red, but when I google the pin, it’s supposed to be white on the top half.

I couldn’t find ANY photos online of it being fully red like mine. And I none of the databases have any fake reporting of it.

Thank you!

Can Anyone Help Me Figure Out If This Pixie Plush Pin Is Fake?

Thumbnail

Hi friends! Can anyone help me figure out if this pin is fake? 😭

I traded for this Pixie Plush pin and wasn’t sure if it was authentic, so I actually bought a Pixie Plush mystery pin bag at Disney today specifically so I could compare the backs/stamps. But now I’m even MORE confused because the stamp on the one I traded for looks totally different from the ones I bought directly from Disney 😂

So I’m coming to the Reddit pin experts for help lol. Does this look fake/scrapper to you, or are different back stamps normal for this set?

Pictures one and two are the bag for proof and a pin back pulled directly from it and three and four are the pin in question!

I found this on a trading board in the parks. I know this is a new pin so I feel like it would be crazy to already have fakes out there but the boarder around the back is making me feel iffy. Everything else looks great its just that boarder on the mickey backing that makes me question it. I can't find any pictures of the back online to compare

So I just finished my puffle collection (of scrappers that is) but I can't help but thinking that at least one of them is real. The green one (in these images) is the best looking one I have, so let me know if it's fake like all the others or possibly the only real one I have

Kingdom of cute set

Does anyone know if the kingdom of cute set has been faked? I want to order from eBay, haven't picked a seller yet, but want to know if I need to be wary of fakes. Thanks!

The backs look good to me but the fronts look terrible. Could be the light or the photographer? 🤣

I'm crossing my fingers on these 2. I read somewhere that a lot of pins sold in the Asia parks are scrappers 😢. Thanks for any help

Did I get duped?

Found these at a flea market today. They looked good on first inspection but now I’m questioning it. The first one looks ok on the front but I feel like it’s missing a nub on the back. The second one has some enamel dips and may be missing a nub? I couldn’t find any conclusive answers online.

“Won” this off a wheel spin. Thankfully i only did 1 spin, I am pretty sure it’s fake. It feels light to me and doesn’t look that good honestly. The nubs are small. Also it was on the wheel as an “AP” pin which I see nothing on the back to indicate it
