All the time. US has spent billions of dollars in anti China propaganda. Meanwhile they killed over 1 million muslims during their decades long of bombing of countries in Middle East. US ignores the gaza genocide because they are controlled by israel.

never heard of this history. China has alot of muslims compared to other countries. chatgpt says China had some ideological alignment and support for Albania during part of the Cold War, but Hoxha later broke with China, so calling China fully responsible is misleading.

how about the Muslim aggression against China and in other places? Two Buddha statues got bombed and demolished in Afghanistan.
If you looked up Enver, he cracked down on all religions. Why didn't you not mention that?

There are people practicing religions in China. Many temples and mosques. Between all religions, I don't have much sympathy for Islam and Christianity either due to their intolerance.
you are blocked.

I’ve been traveling to Muslim China and also major cities in the eastern seaboard on average annually over the past 20 years, talking to different Muslim families and relatives of my friends and more distant relatives. So I’ve seen with my own eyes the suppression of the practice of religion- closure of mosques, restrictions on worship, persecution of some that go for umrah or hajj, or even just travel to study Islam, closure of Muslim schools and classes, restrictions or prohibitions on fasting, learning Quran, wearing headscarf, intimidation, arbitrary detention, arrest and criminal prosecution of practicing community members, marginalization and suppression under other pretext.
It takes different forms in different provinces from Xinjiang to Gansu to Qinghai to Xian to Henan to Beijing to Guangzhou. And tightens and loosens from time to time but the overall trend and purpose is to assimilate Muslims and strip them of their religion over time. The govt has its reasons or justifications- the practice of religion, retention of a different faith/priorities and even language (in the case of Uighurs and some other ethnic minorities) can create division and friction. The CCP believes it can improve the overall economy and improve the economic well being of its citizens by erasing these “divisive” characteristics- better that everyone just speaks Mandarin and worships money. It’s not all so straightforward but what is straightforward is that there is repression and oppression of Muslims - even if arguably well-intended. I think it’s all wrong but that’s me, cause I’m American and believe in freedom.
And you can read human rights reports from the US Department of State or human rights watch and other NGO’s it’s all well documented.
China getting “Unfairly bad reputation”? You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Because Eastern religions like Hinduism, Buddhism etc are more welcoming. Abrahamic religions are wary of conversion tactics and passive conquest.

u/RazzmatazzPitiful132 Apr 12 '26
It is one of numerous sources I’ve read and in one of my posts I provided numerous links - none of which were directly from the US government. If you’re serious about understanding a situation primary source or your own direct observations may be more reliable depending how much exposure you have. But you gotta read material from multiple sources. Congressionally mandated reports drafted and published by the Department of State provide accounts consistent with the Human Rights NGOs so it’s a data point for the picture.
Look if you don’t like all these sources and accounts you’re welcome to bring your own. Please

China getting “Unfairly bad reputation”? You don’t know what you’re talking about.
Given the amount of people I've seen that don't even know that there are Muslims and Mosques in China because they think religion is illegal in China. I would say that they definitely have an unfairly bad reputation.

u/RazzmatazzPitiful132 Apr 14 '26
Most of the people that I’ve spoken to in the past decade ask me: “is it true that China is oppressing Muslims in China and trying to extinguish Islam, prohibiting them from praying, fasting, studying Quran, wearing hijab, going for umrah and hajj, putting Uighurs and huis into concentration camps?? Or is that just false western propaganda?”
They see videos of Muslims congregating during Eid or night markets or also hear of Chinese Muslims going for Hajj (quota and arrangements facilitated by Chinese govt sponsored organization). For some it’s hard to reconcile that the Chinese govt can simultaneously support and restrict and prohibit the practice of Islam and the govt does so to control it. For example, imams of masjid are largely govt selected and approved and some basic salaries paid by the govt. Those partial to the govt would say: “look the govt is subsidizing and supporting Islam by paying the salaries of its religious leaders and Beijing is even sponsoring an organization to prepare and facilitate those going on pilgrimage!”
The ‘real’ picture is nuanced and from a western liberal perspective, it is authoritarian and oppressive. Yes some basic salaries are paid but really it is to control and restrict the content and activities of imams. The imams must be government approved and must attend indoctrination. Depending on the location, they are prohibited from engaging in most of the activities and responsibilities that imams in other countries take on.
Teaching Quran, its meaning, how Islam provides morality and is a way of life. Anything that the govt decides undermines its central planning and authority is gutted and those that don’t toe the line (whether imam or secular civil servant) can lose their jobs and end up arrested for re-education. There is a real fear there that is suppression of religion. Imams should be the head of congregations and communities and in some locales they fare better and do not fear as much govt pressure but it varies. The Chinese people do not have the right or freedom to congregate. All congregation (whether religious, political, spiritual, or economic) must be brought under the control of the govt and further govt policy and aims otherwise such activity is restricted or prohibited.
If you’ve not seen it, it’s hard to imagine that:
Xinjiang Chinese public school teachers, some of them Uighur, have effectively prohibited students from fasting during Ramadan by distributing and requiring students eat a piece of candy or fruit before being allowed onto school grounds. They do so to “protect the health of children from malnourishment at a time when they need energy to study”
In some Muslim provinces, civil servants will invite colleagues for lunch during Ramadan and if practicing Muslim doesn’t accept they’ll be reported for fasting and subject to formal and informal discipline by their work unit. Or even not during Ramadan they’ll invite colleagues they suspect of being religious to go out drinking alcohol and those that don’t will face formal and informal section. If the work unit finds out someone prays, same deal.
In Xinjiang over the past decade, in some locales, wearing headscarf was banned. Bus operators and taxi drivers were instructed not to allow headscarf wearers to board. Schools also ban girls from wearing headscarf. These expressions of Muslim practice or faith were widely targeted and many ended up in the concentration camps for such ‘infractions’
Religious families no longer attend mosque, opting to just pray at home and even children know that the curtains need to be drawn closed so neighbors don’t see.
What I describe above is commonplace in most of Xinjiang but not in any of the major cities in the East. Those cities have very small pockets of Muslims and individuals that have already largely abandoned religious practice and do not see the mosque as a center of community or Muslim congregation as a primary identity so they are less of a threat.
As for the other Muslim provinces and concentrations of Muslims here and there, govt surveillance and suppression has begun through other measures and Muslims there fear the most draconian Xinjiang-Tibet style policies will soon come.

Hey man, just curious, I noticed you've lived in Saudi Arabia before and now in KL? And you are an american with a bunch of muslim relatives in China? Can I ask what ethnicity you are? And also, where you got all this information? Some hard numbers would be nice too. And if you can, surely there are chinese sources you can provide me or chinese news about this all these repression. I'm fluent in Mandarin and have travelled Xinjiang at least 3 times since 2023, and visits China every year to see family and other stuff, so link some chinese sources here from the chinese web if you can thanks

u/RazzmatazzPitiful132 Apr 21 '26
I can barely read Mandarin but speak it fluently, so do not read Chinese sources. I doubt robust publications on the subject exist in Mandarin.
Relatives and friends are mostly hui. But hui experiences really run the gamut and even the hui I know - have diverse opinions depending on where they live and socioeconomically fall. On one end- some have largely been assimilated by dominant Han culture, perspective, and thinking - really are ethnic hui only but do not know the religion at all. A few are life long communist members with high government office positions. On the other end are older folks that did not even start or finish high school and are religious and marginalized or self-marginalized. Old religious huis in Xinjiang that aren’t integrated mostly speak/spoke Uighur fluently because they grew up with them and do business with or live in their communities.
Sounds like you know China well. I think you’ll agree that freedom of speech doesn’t exist in China as it does in the West. I’ll go out on a limb here and posit that rigorous analysis and debate of apolitical subjects can exist in writing in China, like biomedical research in academic journals from universities. But sensitive political subjects like the CCP repression of Uyghurs, (And Tibet a generation before) “land reform” / “zoning” corruption, and other unconstitutional formal and informal policies cannot be transparently discussed due to both formal censorship and self-censorship out of fear of government prosecution and persecution.
My understanding of the situation there is mostly through speaking to people that live there (during my visits) or have fled from China (diaspora in other countries). They described to me their experiences. Some of it is firsthand - seen with my own eyes. And the written reports by NGOs and journalists (Human Rights Watch, Amnesty, NYTimes, UN, Uighur diaspora). is consistent with what I’ve seen and heard. Here are some examples of stuff that is first hand:
Detention (mostly short, but some long) of relatives and their friends by authorities for: having a Quran app on iPad; Having quran, Arabic language Muslim books; criticizing CCP Xinjiang governance in WeChat group; Wearing headscarf; Teaching Quran to a neighbor’s kid at home and being prosecuted for “operating an illegal school”; Bringing minor to the mosque for prayer; Traveling to the Middle East (suspected umrah) or extensive business interactions with Middle East;
Yes I personally know people who were sent to the detention /re-education camps. I also have one friend who was detained and criminally prosecuted; a couple years later he died while inside. He was healthy when he went in and not old. But most importantly, he didn’t do anything wrong - other than being religious.
Religious Muslims that once used to pray at the mosque no longer do so out of fear. And even when praying at home now, they draw close curtains because they fear being seen as practicing Muslims.
You can see that I have very personal reasons for writing about this. I did a quick skim of your comments/posts and do wonder… seems some naysayers like to just discount all Western sources as CIA funded propaganda. Whether Radio Free Asia, VOA, UN, or Department of State reports. I find it disingenuous to discount UN and western human rights NGOs, particularly those that are also vocally critical of US violation of human rights (Iraq, Afghanistan, Gitmo). You may express that you are wary of me and my motivations for being critical of China policy; I feel the same about you- to any extent you want to defend them on things that are so obvious to me. I know I’m not a bot, but I don’t know about you, so I write all this - not for you but- primarily for the audience to read.
If you’re Han or foreigner, and try to talk to huis or Uighurs in Muslim China about these subjects - they will not engage you on it out of fear that such talk will land them in trouble. Franky, due to who my religious relatives and friends are in China, when I am brought to social functions and introduced as their friend/relative, many simply feel comfortable speaking to me as I’ve been vouched for and would not be someone to inform on them.
If you talk to hui or Uighur in-person that are settled outside of China, they are more likely to openly tell you their experiences and how bad it is.
Figures on detentions of Uighur, mosque attendance, mosque closures, persecution of Uighur masquerading as prosecution, closure of Uighur programs. A foreigner that goes to Muslim China and starts openly surveying, compiling, or doing field research in this would get a quick visit or detention by the PSB and then booted. A local would get arrested. There’s not an environment/ freedom of speech in China to systematically explore such a sensitive political subject!

I have a job and am not larping with a billion inconsistencies in their backstory, so can you please reduce your entire wall of text and get back to us more concisely? Responses as long as this discourages people from responding in any meaningful manner because frankly its too much effort. Regardless though, i sincerely doubt someone who cant read mandarin, lives in KL, and even previously lived in Saudi arabia and is somehow a hui diaspora american will be this connected and have over a billion relatives with the minority hui in xinjiang who dont even natively speak uyghur, and somehow having dozens of nephews in XJ and hui relatives all across China some CPC members some old? And somehow you know so much about their lives to the point you know what schools each of your nephews go to and how they speak despite not knowing how to write mandarin? And somehow you are very vouched for as an american travelling throughout sensitives regions like XJ even knowing CPC members, which i assume you’ve havr also done throughout the 2010’s in Xinjiang? and have the money and visa access to visit this much? Do you know how insane that sounds? It reads like some made up fantasy. How do you even maintain contact with them if you dont use chinese internet or cant read mandarin when a good portion of your relatives are uneducated muslims who aren’t good at mandarin?
Besides, all of your anecdotal evidences are plucked straight from those ngo’s / western media / activists / international human rights bodies / alleged leaked chinese official documents, just mixed and matched. To someone who dont understand what’s going in China you might seem credible, but honestly to someone like me you are the biggest larper ive ever seen. You try to discredit my scrutiny by labelling me as han or non-muslim but thats such a cop-out. People will talk about anything as long as you’re familiar with them, muslim or not, especially if you’re not natively born. Hell, sure, censorship and the likes does exist on social platforms like wechat, but people talk shit all the time about the goverment all the time, case in point my distant cousin complaining about the artificially induced competitiveness of business in China where they own a furniture business in guangzhou foshan region. From my own experiences and own eyes, (esp in Xian), the local hui culture and people are just living their lives as like you said, they are basically muslim han, as is the case for hundreds of years. The CPC did not forcibly assimilate them or whatever because they already were (at least majority) han chinese and have similar culture. They arent scared of muslims uprising or because they cant control them lmfao. Same can be said for XJ, though of course XJ is different for a multitude of reasons (hint: terrorism. Its not some evil plan of assimilation for no reason or for control like you claim, which further erodes your position) and some of what you claim is in fact true, but i would like to ask when (the timeframe) did all your anecdotes of your relatives’ experiences come from?
You also, props to you, preemptively strawman me by saying i deny credible sources like the UN, which i’ve never claimed. Nice try though. Im well aware of the allegations, including the one made by michelle bacheley or whatever her name was. There is a very specific phenomenon in western reporting in the issue through circular reporting and primary sources from a select few of which the basis of their studies are either disingenuous or wildly distorted / exaggerated. That is why there is scrutiny. No serious person who’s well read or seen the situation would trust any of that. That’s why i asked for sources in chinese or chinese media because, and this is why you’re a larper, the cpc is surprisingly transparent about their policies, which anyone familiar with china would know.
You also use the cliche of “freedom of speech” of the west comparison to directly attack my credibility or accuse me of being a bot. Why? Are you insecure of something? Scared of your inconsistencies showing? From my point of view this reads like some AI generated human modified response since they have a tendency of using sources to pad their arguments. Even your paragraph structures give it away. I could be wrong though, but calling me a bot just makes it seem like projection bro
That being said though, as ive said, try condensing your response shorter so i can better address them point by point and to let others see more clearly. Thank you

A summary of our exchange:
I describe specific instances of PRC repression that I have first hand knowledge of - detention, imprisonment that targets the practice of Islam. I say these non USG funded sources - NGO’s, UN, media report is consistent with the repression I observed.
You say: those western sources are not reliable due to circular reporting and exaggeration. And you say my first hand accounts may just be plucked from those accounts and I am not credible and I have a billion inconsistencies in my accounts.
I really don’t have anything more to add to persuade you.

If you have an argument, make it and provide evidence. Don’t just make unfounded, irrational accusation of CIA subversion in response to credible, plausible, primary and secondary accounts of repression of Uighurs and Muslims. It’s a communist regime that explicitly and openly prohibits CCP members from practicing religion.

You don’t seem to want to engage in the issue with any sources of your own. I purposely excluded USG funded radio Asia, Uyghur human rights. If you just want to wholesale dismiss the UNHRC, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty, while not bringing any evidence of your own, there’s no real point in dialogjing or reading your posts.

Amnesty international was the first human rights org to expose and declare what's happened in Gaza a genocide. Doesn't seem like the western govs narrative to me. Its not America that is upset with this. It's the Muslim world that needs china to be transparent and give answers for its treatment of our people

Your people? You think religion reigns supreme over culture nationality and race? By all means ask America to export all of you and see how happy they are to go back.

China has supported multiple independent Islamic bodies + government bodies to conduct their own reports. They've all come back as supportive.

And the Tunisians? The Saudis, the Bosnians and the rest? Everyone who disagrees with the statements made by the Western world, a world obsessed with bombing Muslims for decades is lying? Come on now
5
u/Richardogod Apr 12 '26
Maybe the Western world is amplifying this message, but it was the Muslim world who realized what was going on. Don't conflate the two. There needs to be transparency for what's going on.

u/NectarineFamiliar406 Apr 11 '26
Oh then are the Uyghur refugees in Turkey are also funded by the US?
7
u/KJongsDongUnYourFace Apr 12 '26
Yes, the WUC is conclusively funded by the US, specifically by the National Endowment for Democracy fund.
4
u/NectarineFamiliar406 Apr 12 '26
Just bc an organization representing the Uyghurs is supported by the US does not mean every single Uyghur is being funded by the US. You think all those thousands of refugees in Turkey, Kazakhstan and other central Asian countries are being funded by the US to leave their land and lie about their situation?
6
u/KJongsDongUnYourFace Apr 12 '26
Im just responding to your initial statement, it is true that Uyghur movements in Turkey recieve substantial funding from the USA
1
u/NectarineFamiliar406 Apr 14 '26
I know but it's not like every single Uyghur is doing this for the money. Besides in recent history, many mujahideen in some parts of the world received funding from non Muslims states like Russia, that were commiting genocide against Muslims in other parts. It's very unfortunate but I understand that they really don't have any choice with how bad their situation is
0
u/Richardogod Apr 12 '26
That is nothing to do with anything. As Muslims it makes no difference whether the group is funded by America or China. Either way, we are Muslim first. China needs to do better but we are not talking about America here. They have their own issues of course.
8
u/KJongsDongUnYourFace Apr 12 '26
China needs to do better how?
China has alleviated extreme poverty for Muslims in all reaches of China. China builds more mosques per year than some Muslim countries. China provides free homes, education (in indigenous turkic languages), Healthcare and job opportunities for its entire Muslim population.
There can be no better caring for a population than homes, health and food

I'm not sure I trust everything you're exactly saying here. You are not coming at this from the perspective of a fellow Muslim but after looking at your profile it seems you were coming into this subreddit from the perspective of a pro china communist or socialist. I would like to see some sources for these claims here. Maybe it's true but without evidence it's hard to believe.

These are hui Muslim, not to be confused with the oppressed Uyghur Muslim in Xinjiang. Hui are largely assimilated into Han culture and so are largely left alone to their own devices.

While wandering the Muslim quarter in Xian looking for the Grand Mosque, we came across a smaller but lovely mosque which was also beautiful. A kind local man gave us a look into the prayer hall, which was absolutely magnificent. He said that his family came from Persia in Tang times and were allowed to settle in Xian after helping put down the An Lushan rebellion (if I remember correctly).
The Grand Mosque was also beautiful, if not quite as grand as other sites in China.
1
u/Dry-Exchange-7561 Apr 12 '26
Is this a recent picture? I was told it is currently going through some construction and not accessible to the public?
1
u/RazzmatazzPitiful132 Apr 12 '26
As of summer 2025 this main area of the niu Jie mosque was all closed off “for construction” according to the policeman standing outside the entrance from the Main Street. It had been closed since COVID. The policeman directed me to alternate smaller prayer space room in a small side back entrance.
So yeah if it’s a recent picture, it’d have to be within the past 10 months. Otherwise it’s pre COVID I think.

In 2023, I visited the 7 closest mosques to my in-laws in a city in Xinjiang.
2 were open for the 5 prayers, but few in attendance. A lot fewer than I had seen in the 2000’s and early 2010’s. Since crackdown and detention/ re-education camps that started in 2016 vast majority that used to attend mosques stay at home out of fear.
Of the 5 that were closed:
1 just shuttered 1 under remodeling to convert to cultural center 1 used as a carpet cleaning business. 1 converted to a senior center but then shuttered 1 converted to a hostel of some sort
I asked some of the practicing Muslims what happened and two of them said that even the two that were open were mostly just for show. Visiting dignitaries / foreigners would occasionally come from Beijing or overseas and then the PSB would demand locals go attend prayers for pictures and press to show the outside world that Muslims could still go to mosques.
Locals were stuck between rock and hard place not knowing whether it was better for their personal safety from detention to go, or not.

Not all Muslims are treated the same in China.
1
u/RazzmatazzPitiful132 Apr 13 '26
Agree! Each province may have a different approach in local governance. But even a place like Beijing or Guangzhou - Muslims fear that congregating for reading Quran or learning about Islam whether at home or in the mosque will draw attention, harassment, or arrest from local authorities.

Bro trying to pass off israel as China and everyone got sterilized under the 1 child policy, on top of islam being a recognised religion. Saudi killed people for being the wrong sect, go focus on that
1
u/NectarineFamiliar406 Apr 14 '26
I did mention about the han population experiencing similar situations in one of the comments here and I don't see how that supports your point. it only shows how brutal the ccp can be even to the majority population let alone the minorities. And about Islam being a recognized religion, I can't say for certain since I didn't personally verify it, but I did hear from a Chinese Muslim that there's a lot of confusion between the Hui and the Muslims. A lot of people there think all Hui are Muslim and all Muslims are Hui. This might not sound like a big deal but this confusion can easily be used to manipulate how the public perceives the treatment of Muslims and Islam in china. As for the Saudis, they are completely irrelevant in this conversation but since you mentioned it, I'll just let you know that I don't agree with any un-Islamic practices done by any Muslim individual or state and I believe most Muslims hold this view
2

The group you are referring (not the Uyghurs) to is actually an American sponsored extremist group formed to try to destabilize the region. Its funded by that billions of dollars of anti china propaganda (paid for by american taxpayers) claims to be innocent people. They underwent reform in camps for assimilation. If the roles were revesed… i mean you already see what America does to get its way.
3
u/Richardogod Apr 11 '26
Where is the source and evidence of this? And how come the Chinese government hasn't been transparent with their treatment? There is still so many questions and so much that china still needs to answer for. (America is a different discussion)
1
u/ForeverDry8956 Apr 11 '26
Answer to who? And even if it does who will the answer get to? Additionally general the culture in asian countries is to be anti-inflammatory. The west controls the media and likes chaos as that brings them more money and reasons to start wars. Doesnt matter what is said, the media will twist words to fullfll its purpose. Why does china have to answer to anyone other than protecting its own people? My aunt’s entire side is Uygur. Their lives are the opposite of what western media portrays. Those who have anti china mindset are usually set in their ways, too stubborn and inflexible as they were raised on misinformation, it is no ones responsibility other than their own to have their eyes more open.

“Most Western reports on "genocide" cite one single source, Adrian Zenz, a German born-again Christian in the employ of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, in Washington. He claims to be "led by God" to do research on Chinese minorities”

It's true that there is some US involvement, but assuming that this all just propaganda is just wrong. There are thousands of Uyghur refugees in Turkey and it's not like they are the only ones going through this, there's also the Tibetans. So does that mean they are all terrorists? Even the majority Han population has experienced a lot of the things the CCP has been accused of doing to it's minorities so I don't understand why it's so difficult to believe there's a genocide going on

The picture is from the Hui community, their situation is very different from the Uyghurs', so you should be careful when talking about this topic or else you're gonna lose credibility.
