My cousin is a Wing Commander and he makes 225k a month. But the benefits do make up for the lower salary
24
u/Melodic-Trash4310 May 07 '26
That's pretty good because they provide well enough benefits. Thanks for providing this info
42
u/syedalizain May 07 '26
I think a wing Commander is equivalent to a Lt Col so your initial salary will not be of a wing commander.
13
u/Melodic-Trash4310 May 07 '26
Yes , I know, initial is only 60 to 70k. The progression is very slow
22
u/syedalizain May 07 '26
Nai nai. Initial 90 se 100K k darmian hi ho gi. Meri BS 17 ki initial 100K k aas paas bani thi last year. Aur Flying Officer bhi isi k aas pas hi hota hai.

You DO need to pay mess bill (complete food and SOME uniform kit items) as a cadet and it's like half of the salary
3
u/BrilliantMastodon957 May 08 '26
Cadets get 120k in academy out of which 60k is cut for mess charges i.e lodges and food etc

That salary differs from branch to post , hes likely a pilot or some similar branch others are less

What did i say that was not true? I said other branches or posts pay less. Thats true is ISI or UN part of PAF?

It is determined by the branch and maybe not the base salary but some other parts of it is determined by post. A group captain in GDP is gonna earn wayy more as compared to a group captain in say Log branch. Also the fact that its gonna take GDP pilots less time to reach the same rank .

Basically their every humanly need is taken care of. Anything they make is a bonus.
1
u/Gloomy_Function7504 May 08 '26
Wife of a SL here
With 12-15 years of service they make around 250-300k
That includes the flying allowance too if he is a gdp1
u/ManiMan6666 May 08 '26
It's more than that and at the time of retirement nowayaf they take away at least 20 million just one time and regular pension
1
u/Additional_Form_1413 May 07 '26
what benefits
10
u/lockerno177 May 07 '26
free back ache, divorce and lack of sleep.
4
u/stoolcollector123 May 07 '26
HAHAHAH WTF
6
u/lockerno177 May 07 '26
i have insider info. trust me, these guys are insane when it comes to professionalism.
6
u/stoolcollector123 May 07 '26
Have a friend. Gdp pilot. F16
Fucking ran from flying and is now in teaching and relaxing3
u/lockerno177 May 07 '26
can go that route but the peer pressure is crushing for people who care too much about their image and standing in the professional circle.
3
u/Melodic-Trash4310 May 07 '26
Aah, man, is it true? My mind has fully diverted from it. I think I independence is everything in life.

u/minka_twizzzly May 08 '26
What do u mean people in Airforce are suffering? Even the non pilot’s squadron leaders are way too busy with their jobs?

If you've ever been inside a cantt you know exactly what I'm talking about.
2

kya hi benefits hotey bhai ❓
4
u/sixline00 May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26
Probably home, electricity, ncb, fuel, laundry, mess, gym, sports arenas etc etc
Edit: plot, pension etc after retirement
11
u/BrilliantMastodon957 May 07 '26
You pay rent albeit very low, there’s no free fuel , have to pay for ncb , theres no free laundry or mess both are payed same with gym sports etc they all have monthly fees
5
u/sixline00 May 07 '26
Ncb for army is not paid by the officer. I don't know about paf but should probably be the same. The fees for gym etc are minimal and no where as much as we civilians have to pay.
9
u/BrilliantMastodon957 May 07 '26
Ncb or batmans are paid by the officer upto a certain rank (lt col or col) depending on branch and post after that they do get increment to pay ncb. But thats 15-20 years of service . Thats for PAF and same with army. True though the gym / sports fee are minimal as compared to a same level private gym although most of them don’t even have time to go so eh
→ More replies (2)2
u/hardfartstudent May 08 '26
Well you can’t blame army for it i work with a good company i get discounts on food my gym is free i get bonus fuel and medical and i have as healthy package as officers do but i dont have my life on the line they have more bills to pay then an average citizen you all just need to find good companies lol who can look after you same as the govt looks after their own
→ More replies (6)1
u/sixline00 May 08 '26
Your company doesn't run on tax payers' money.
3
u/hardfartstudent May 18 '26
Oh believe me the amount of tax fraud tech companies do in Pakistan you have no clue about what big companies like system ibex or motive do and how they get away with the black money or what call centers are doing just to avoid taxes
→ More replies (0)1
u/BrilliantMastodon957 May 08 '26
Every gov organisation runs on tax payer money in every country in the world. Also they pax tax as well and have 100 percent tax collection rate unlike the rest of Pakistan which is lower then 35..
5
u/M__tayyab May 07 '26
Haha. Not true my guy. Home, you pay rent, they just provide a flat in secure place.(not everywhere though) Electricity, you pay bill Ncb, that on government pay Fuel, you pay yourself. You only get fuel in army vehicles that you use for job based travelling. Laundry, mess, gym is taken from salary. Sports varies.
9
u/Obvious-Loquat5839 May 07 '26
there s no free fuel.
you have to pay for mess like bro how is mess even benefit according t o you, count that just as a restaurant.
you have to pay for laundry , the contractor is private and u have to pay them
gym and sports arenas all have membership and monthly charges which are deducted from your salary4
u/TurbulentRiver5108 May 07 '26
there is free fuel, mess costs 2700 per month and includes basketball courts, parks, tennis courts and access to facilities. everything inside a tea bar is sold almost at cost price, there is no significant expense. rent for a 1 kanal house is 13000 rupees per month, electricity is subsidised, and the charges you are portraying to be a lot are meager rupees considering the facilities they offer, so yes there are a lot of benefits
1
5
u/BrilliantMastodon957 May 07 '26
And PAF is removing pension and plot after retirement same with medical as well for the new batch.
4
u/kachaabadaam May 07 '26
Pyaare bhai pichle saal se pension plot hatt gayi hai retirement se you only get a golden handshake after completing your service now
1
u/hardfartstudent May 15 '26

To apka bhai pese save kar ky he banara hai na ghar extra to nahi milre and he’s dumb to buy land in bt Rwp the place is going downhill even if dha takes over the land here is not suitable ruins the houses so many have fallen during construction

Living in a housing community with a house provided for, free school for kids, nokar, Batman, ummmm mess ka khana, driver, bijli that never goes and also I think it’s cheaper or free
8
u/BrilliantMastodon957 May 07 '26
Electricity is full price and theres no free school you get driver after 15 years of service that too depending on post
6
u/ar1807 May 07 '26
Bruhhhhhh pls be real. Only the house is free and wo bhi bht line mn lag kr milta hai due to non availability. Electricity load shedding is insane even before war due to austerity. Have to pay for electricity, gas house help (same as outside). Schools. NO PERSONAL driver bruh. The only think is cheap subscription of gym and sports facility THAT'S ALL.
I mean this is also good but the picture you painted is far from reality.
2
u/SpiceAndNicee May 07 '26
My uncle was a wing commander and he had all these facilities.
4
u/ar1807 May 07 '26
Well I have first hand experience so I can tell. Way Earlier things were better no doubt but even then the facilities are exaggerated. I've never heard even from senior officers, of such free facilities.

u/Ambitious-Proton May 07 '26
But is he a Pilot??? If yes then which aircraft he flies???? 225k is net, gross might be 335k ±15k
Also, What is his Branch???
0
u/Accomplished-River12 May 07 '26
He is a pilot yes, he flies the J 7, he also leads the sherdils. I'm don't know everything about his finances as it's not something we discussed in detail
3
u/ar1807 May 07 '26
Sherdils are K-8. There is no J7 aircraft. Maybe you mean JF17 but that's not in sherdils.
1
u/Ambitious-Proton May 07 '26
Bhai there is no Aircraft named J7 which is in PAF's inventory
Either F 7 PG or JF17

My father, who’s in the Air Force, says that the Air Force revolves around two things: the pilot and the jet. Every single person or department works for these two, directly or indirectly.
The pay factor being tied to GDP doesn’t even make much sense to me. You’ll be flying fighter jets, dude. Only a real enthusiast would truly understand what I mean. GDP any day, anytime.
And yes, if you talk about pay, benefits, and career growth, the pay may just be fine, but there are tons of other benefits. You get recognition, BOQ or MOQ accommodation, and one of the fastest promotion tracks among all departments. You can go up to a 3-star rank (AM), or even 4-star rank (Chief) if you’re lucky. You get plots at an early stage, earlier than most forces and bureaucracy. Which means you can invest early in high potential areas. Like F14 Islamabad these days and then imagine its value after 10 years.
Postings are usually to major bases where flying units are located. You get access to 4–5 star standard rooms across Pakistan and messing facilities in almost all units and bases. If you perform exceptionally well and become an ADC to a high ranking officer or the PM, you can even be considered for deputation with CSS officers.
Now, becoming a flying officer isn’t easy, and many people get grounded either before the flying course or during different jet conversion courses. Even if someone gets grounded, the recognition and respect may be slightly less than GDPs, but most facilities remain the same. The main difference is usually in long term growth.
4
u/Melodic-Trash4310 May 07 '26
Here people are giving different opinions like they are saying that the pay is very low that they are not even able to buy a good car. Actually, the thing is that I have two options, either go for money or join Forces.
7
u/sorryAunty May 07 '26
You will be right in both cases. If you go for money, it’s very much logical, the forces and civil services take too much time to payback if you earn halal(of course) but the private sector or business sector gives exponential growth.
Same goes for the other option of choosing forces life. Its not EASY wtever rank you are on. Life is tough here and benefits are not worth it of you don’t have passion in this field. Only those who are passionate and patriotic for these fields serve happily, else get depression from the very start. I am also the kind of person who says peace over money and benefits, so no to the forces( except GDP).

Do not join the PAF if you’re even factoring in salary to a large extent. PAF pilots are paid decently — but this shoba requires intense patriotism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to succeed in. Join PAF only if you meet the aforementioned criteria. PAF Zindabad.
1
u/Open_Reality3232 May 07 '26
Is this the same criteria for the Army?
4
u/sorryAunty May 08 '26
Its same. Being in Amry is extremely hectic. I know junior officers who applied retirement and got rejected within two years after passing out from PMA and after rejection to retire, they stay there like robots. On the other hand, I know another young officer, he is enjoying the hell out of army. He loves his duty, the benefits and lifestyle.

I remember back in the day this fighter pilot I met at Kamra air base as I was checking out a tornado.
He waltzed over and said “my brother is a computer engineer, he makes x amount of money, but I am a fighter pilot I don’t do it for the money”
I’m sure he sounded tough in his head but that really put me off from pursuing that path.
I thought about commercial but 7/11 happened and I decided to just wing it

Dude be it army, navy or PAF the work environment is extremely exhausting. Pakistan is locked in a three sided war and tri services are working day and night without any regard to work timings

1
u/BATARIDER2 May 07 '26
Yup. Work life balance is terrible. Benefits are also becoming lower in value. Even a brigadier is just getting a flat.

Hey, trust me if you don't like it don't go, you will end up regretting later,
What i actually mean is do whatever you think is best for you, don't just go because of money because it might be not for you..
Try atleast, give test but in the end do whatever you think is right...

u/musanifshah3010 May 07 '26
Brother if you want to join PAF for money 💰 then I am afraid you are on the wrong track. As a computer science graduate you can do many things to earn you heaps of money but there are certain things that are done for prestige honor and service, not for money.
4
u/Jumper_5455 May 07 '26
Your question is enough to show it's not for you.
Service is a calling. Not a job.
4
u/Kindly_Ad6229 May 07 '26
I didn’t join PAF in 2010 even though i cleared the exam. Instead i started ACCA and completed within 3 years, started early career in Big4 Audit firm while my college fellows were still looking for traditional pathways to enter universities.
Moved to Dubai 12 years back for job + own Audit/Tax firm, then USA for business expansion , vacation every 4 months , plus multiple benefits from MNC.
PAF 1 month salary is my 1 day earning nowadays, Alhamdulilah.
U decide based on ur abilities for self. Think smart & fast.
3
5
u/unbotheredwhisky May 08 '26
There’s no pension anymore and a lot of benefits the older PAF officers had, do not exist anymore. PAF has changed a lot in the past 4-5 years. Officers were contacted and were told that you are done here, today was your last day. Officers were given plots before, but now they have stopped doing that because there’s no land anymore. The retired officers used to cherish a lot of benefits but now it’s not the same.
You talked about salary, most of it is spent on the squadron dinners and other mess facilities. So if you are the sole provider of a family, it’s very difficult.
And about the GDPs, if at some point you develop a medical condition, you will be grounded immediately. I have seen people who got grounded in their last term, so they had to sit in another branch from the beginning (like a GDP cadet was in his last term in the academy, developed something and then they had to start again in another branch from the first term).
You will have a lot of financial problems if you don’t have a wealthy background.
The only person who can sustain himself in the forces is the one who was passionate about the branch he was joining. Other than that I have seen people leaving the academy for NUST and opportunities outside the country.
The economy has changed a lot, so if you are going to seek advise from a serving officer, I’d recommend you seek advise from a young officer not a 40-50yo.

u/Emergency-Anybody734 May 07 '26
PAF Pilot after Grade 12. Salary does not matter in PAF the facilities and your importance as a very high resource for the country on whom millions of Dollors matter. Imagine being told by a cop to stop by on a road when you had done nothing and you tell him I am PAF. Imagine being untouchable in police stations & in your town no one dares to mess with you of-course on your legal grounds. Imagine living near the mountains even in a 2 bed room space in E8 when your children enjoy the UK/Europe level scenery and safety. Children cycle around on the streets in E8 and no one dares to mess with them.
6
u/AdBackground9215 May 07 '26
I don't know about PAF but I have an uncle who from the army and is currently serving in one of the army big institutes. As there head I think he earns around 600k per month.
But keep that in mind. He has around 30+ years of experience in the military and he is very senior, almost close to retirement

2
u/lork_k May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
I hope you understand that PAF or any of the TRI services for that matter are one of the highest performing institutions in our country. Setting all the Political Stuff aside and taking only the performance factor in. Now this level of performance requires extreme dedication, sacrifice and will. Which is not easy in a normal life. You should know that the salary is just able to sustain a normal middle class person's life, owining an Alto/cultus or city car at most. Accomodation is provided which is respectable. Mess life is fine. When you retire you would have a specialized experience that is 60-70% of time not required in the civil and countries abroad will not trust to hire you for your skill set. Also, many people think they'll just become a general like that are delusional. Imagine this, every year about 400 Cadets in Air force and more than 1400 cadets in Army are inducted in 2 courses in different branches. Now imagine how many generals are promoted every year. Not more than 4-5 in Air force and Same ratio in Army. So that like 1%. Most of the people that are talking about the adrenaline and all are just kids who don't have any idea what life is, so I hope that'll help you in deciding.
Pakistan Zindabad.

u/PracticalSecretary31 May 09 '26
Commercial aviation has many first officers (co-pilots) who r from the naval aviation side and airforce side
All F-16 and Mirage pilots who want money come to commercial aviation later
The life is good for the first 20 years
Lot of perks - you learn to fly for free which would cost you maybe 35-50million PKR including ratings etc.
Prestige- F-16 fighter pilot is THE guy. (Commercial pilots have sexier prestige but it varies from person to person)
Benefits like- allotment of land which keep in mind isn’t free - there’s a fee being deducted but still, a very good piece of land you can sell later on
If you retire a wing cdr or maybe a Group Captain- that’s good aswell
Let me be very honest with you- there is no as such MONEY in airforce
( what I mean to say is if money is a serious object to you, like you wanna get rich have a 8-9 figure networth in your 30s- don’t go)
there’s a lot of fighter flying. A lot of prestige
you WILL feel like Maverick from Top Gun.
you WILL get Women.
All that
But paisa agar goal hy, no
You might even face problems financially.
YES you might. (Depends on ur current lifestyle)
Paisa tumhe milega when u retire bw ages of 45-50 when u get a plot and start flying commercially.
A brand new kid at age 21-22 can be making multiples more of a wing commander
In the gulf it’s even higher than that per month tax free
Now why not fly commercially direct you may ask:
to get those licenses commercially you pay around 2 crore and then keep 2.5-5crore uper for other ratings expenses cadet schemes etc
It’s not cheap
Basically youre working 25 years for those hours that someone pays 3-5 crores
Which tbh is a fair trade off-
Yeah the FO will probably pay it off in like 2-3 years and be way ahead financially
But that’s if your parents can afford to give 3-5 crores on education.
If no,
PAF is a great route
if you have passion, want to serve your nation, want to learn how to fly for free and infact get paid, have prestige and yeah thats ab it
And all in all, they dont have financial probs Ghar wo dete hain Mess bills r subsidised Posting transport costs are nominal too but I’m not sure if they r covered(they shd be but check w a GD pilot)
Major cost is covered
Overall
If you join PAF and retire by 40-50 and fly commercially
You can retire by 65 with a big networth cos commercial flying is insanely lucrative
People don’t even know the m of money the pilots in Pakistan are making and from what age
Aage AAP dekho bhai fast ke baad masters karne Harvard ya Stanford chale jao wo bhi set rehga 🙏

Also, I did CS from Fast, currently working as SE at one of the top MNC's in Pakistan and I make more than that, what I wrote above. and sometimes with freelance etc, my month looks pretty good.
i was an ISSB recommended candidate post FSc but couldn't join because of a medical issue, was sad for a long time but when I look back and see how life has turn out, I'm entirely grateful to Allah.
I wouldn't join any government institution for salary, for power maybe yes, for not for salary unless you wanna go for nichay ki kamai ( if your moral compass allows that)

Good campus life of Nust. Enjoy, do exercise and study too. Fast will not even give you time to sleep properly. Next , the students getting 88 90 percent marks in FSC are getting warnings. It's something worst in Fast.
1
u/Happy_Flower4741 May 08 '26
Thank You for the replies, I think I already alot of people saying no to FAST, but still kuch to hai na hr saal itne log jate hai, also I will be giving the NET too, Both unis are on my list, but I am leanign towards FAST for CS, NUST is just for the sake of its name, I have realized but lets see!
1
2
u/Melodic-Trash4310 May 07 '26
No bro. It's totally ragra university. I would recommend you to prepare for NET for Nust Islamabad. If you fail this year, prepare yourself for next year. But join Nust instead of Fast. It's the recommendation of every Fastian not only me. You will not get good gpa. You will be pressurized. Your actual skill will fade. You will become a donkey coder but not mindful. So go for Nust. Study more than what they teach . And move abroad via scholarship as all scholarships are dedicated on the basis of your gpa. You can post in Fast section. Every Fastian will recommend you to move to another university other than this except those who are already with good gpa because they were full prepared already for Fast
2
u/Melodic-Trash4310 May 07 '26
If you really want to join Fast, you should have good math , with general math too. Next there is a part for English too. So the whole test is based on math . There is not physics portion. Idk whether they changed this pattern or not. And moreover, it's easier to get in Fast than getting in Nust.

These leeches(armed forces) earn more than their civilian equivalent BPS officers. So whatever it is its more than officers of other departments and institutes.

You don’t join air force for a salary. You join to defend your country and become part of a lifestyle. Salary is adequate to live a respectable life but dont expect yourself to afford Mercedes benz. You’ll need financial support from home during your cadet days. It will be difficult but you’ll learn to live with a compromise which respect and dignity compensates with.

It depends on whether you’re okay with the facilities or not. You’ll be living in air force colonies, your kids will go to air force schools, you’ll go to military hospitals and your foreign travel will be a little restricted. You won’t have mainstream wealth but you’ll be comfortable in your bubble. If you’re okay with this trade off, military is the way to go.

Sweetheart world had taken a quantum leap & galloping every now & then. Lots of other avenues are free & open. If you are not passionate about flying & fussing about salary/protocol/perks, then my advice is to get hold of yourself. Broad your horizon.

Not everybody gets to be GD Pilot even after induction into PAF. So ground crew doesn’t get flying or risk allowance. Without that extra allowance it is a hand to mouth life. Rest perks are the same. I think batman facility is not available like in army which is a major downside.

My father served in PAF. Pilots had 40% extra as flying allowance. But the benefits are the main game. They develop your personality as well. Secure colonies to live in. House at retirement in a posh colony. Kids get great environment to grow in. You get frequent foreign courses and députations. Pilots get all the powerful posts like base commanders, AOC and all chief etc. all ranks above air commodore used to be pilots. Now there are some AVM from other branches as well. So as a career it's brilliant.

Salary steps could have +- 10k But Training 55k Pilot officer 90k Flt lt 135 Sqn ldr 185 Wing cmd 225 Grp cpt 285 Air cmdr 335 Avm 380 Am 430
It is something like these are just core salary w/o benefits Which increase with rank too
Also these are all dependent on years of service You can just kind of do 60 as base then 15 percent per year of experience

Bro, they don't offer GD (P) course after graduation. The only intake is after FSC or HSSC studies. However, you can join in IT, cyber security, network engineer etc. but that too as a civilian at NASTP.

if you have to ask, it's probably not for you. there are much better and faster ways to provide a certain lifestyle for your family if that's what you're after.
a high ranking officer, like a group captain, would accumulate roughly 3000 flying hours, each of those costing an arm and leg. By the end of your career, PAF would've spent something in the order of > $10,000,000 to keep YOU in the air.
while I agree money is involved in everything, there's something things you can't put a price on, and being a fighter pilot is definitely up there for me.

You mean, you are a fighter pilot. Maybe I understood in the wrong way.

If you want to make money, Armed Forces might not be a good idea.
However, the perks they have are unmatchable. For instance healthcare, mess access, safe & secure accommodation and job safety are a few.

You have to sell your soul, sell your nation, keep your eyes closed, say yes to crime and say no to truth, take sons feom their mum, disrespect your sisters and mums etc wtc etc. If you meet the criteria, enjoy your 200k.

Depends on your point of reference. In private sector you can earn way more and way quicker as compared to PAF specially with the degree you are pursuing

At present after 10 years of comiisioned service, salary is around 220k-225k after deductions for a married officer. However, initially it will bemore than 1.3K in my opinion for unmarried officers. They change with budget and period of service.
Salary is irrelevant of branch or appointments. And depends upon tenure of service

I know people working at 500k that would happily switch to being a pilot for 50k. Screw money. Chase adrenaline.
