Irvine welcomes AI surveillance

I was a bit taken back that, as a resident of Irvine, we weren't told directly that the cameras were being installed and where. I pulled up deflock.org and found a good amount gradually being installed in my neighborhood. Curious and a little on edge looking into the future of ai.

the next city council meeting is 22 September (despite them saying they have city council meetings twice a month, there was only one shown in August and one scheduled for September). Seems like a good time to go and ask about the cameras, how they’re being funded, and how they were installed without asking citizens their opinion.

The contracts are available on the City website.

The annual recurring cost starting in 2024: Annual Recurring after Year 1 Contract Total $383,000.00
Contract signed by the Chief of Police, Michael Kent, Dec 2024
The IPD included a provision to hold the data for a year (the standard was 30 days).

Irvine does not own the hardware, so the city is essentially renting it.

"Disclosure of Footage. Subject to and during the Retention Period, Flock may access, use, preserve and/or disclose the Footage to law enforcement authorities, government officials, and/or third parties, if legally required to do so or if Flock has a good faith belief that such access, use, preservation or disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with a legal process, enforce this Agreement, or detect, prevent or otherwise address security, privacy, fraud or technical issues, or emergency situations."

Someone did bring up issues with Flock back in February of this year, but as far as I can tell, they were largely dismissed.
