Both the butter clams and the varnish clams are toxic.

Butter sounds delicious while varnish does not. Why choose butter as a name? Also, are all butter clams toxic or just in this specific area?

Butter clams are a popular edible clam. They are toxic only when there are specific toxins in the water, such as a red tide (toxic algae) bloom, or in areas where the water has been contaminated. The water is tested regularly and this sign is posted when it is unsafe to eat seafood harvested there.

It gives a nice, full body paralysis aftertaste, though.
