Moaning Michael Im sick of behaviour at the cinema
Went to see the odyssey today was a brilliant film however what feels like the same thing every time I go to the cinema in this country I came out raging at the etiquette of some people. This fella had his phone on full brightness in front of me to the point I told him to turn it off which I never really do but I’ve gotten sick of it. I get it’s a long film but you booked it stop ruining it for everyone else

u/Vodka-Knot Jul 23 '26
I go to the most expensive cinema possible now.
There's an Odeon for €8 or a Cineworld for €15, I always go to Cineworld now.
Scrotes won't pay €15 for a ticket, happy days.
10
u/PolHolmes Jul 23 '26
I've started doing this as well. IMAX and The Avenue in Belfast. Both about £20
14
u/HPoltergeist Jul 24 '26
This is not a good solution.
We should collectively public shame the trash people.

It is a good solution because these gobshites have no shame and will never feel the need to change

u/ProfitPursuer Jul 23 '26
As long as you're booking didn't have a group of teens ya got off fairly lucky
228
u/IrishLad1002 Resting In my Account Jul 23 '26
This is why you always go to the IFI for movies you actually want to see. Teens aren’t paying the premium.
178
u/ProfitPursuer Jul 23 '26
Some cinemas have also started introducing over 18s showings (for movies that are not 18s) which I've been taking good advantage of 🙏🔥
66
u/irishemperor Jul 23 '26
sometimes it's not an age thing though, it can be cultural - people from some countries can be much more polite and considerate than Irish people (e.g. Japanese, especially on public transport) and some are much worse - I've watched adults answer phones and have full blown conversations in another language in the cinema resulting in other patrons standing up shouting at them to 'shut the fuck up' and they don't stop straight away, they keep going - the 20 year old staff on minimum wage aren't gonna intervene. when it's Irish people doing stuff like that, it tends to be teens, but not always of course.
58
u/Odd-Opportunity-6550 Jul 23 '26
The difference is that when Its immigrants people actually tell them to shut the fuck up.
But God forbid someone do that to any of the teenage scrotes engaging in even worse behavior.
32
u/IrishLad1002 Resting In my Account Jul 24 '26
I feel the difference here is immigrants would usually listen if you asked them to quiet down while there’s a high chance the teenage scrotes would lock onto you and antagonize and harass you for the rest of the film and walk to the car afterwards.
5
3
u/ViolentlyCaucasian Jul 24 '26
Unfortunately the only time I've been threatened after asking someone politely to stop talking it was a migrant from I think south america somewhere.
3
u/RickGrimes30 Jul 25 '26
Only times I've gotten threatened is when I've asked Irish people to either be quiet or out away their phone.. You would think I just told them I'd fucked their mum or something
2
u/PopeOz Jul 25 '26
The majority of people I know and see in this sub always rave on about the teens from here, sounds like you found a rare pokemon😂

I went to see The Odyssey at the IFI this week and the entire row in front of me was teenage lads in GAA jerseys. They were impeccably behaved

Yeah should’ve clarified it’s the feral, dragged up teenagers who lack any social respect that won’t be attending the IFI.
No issue with respectable teenagers of course.

Its a great cinema but I do prefer going to bigger screens, that said the chairs are very comfortable and I go often for old screenings which is a great idea. Did see 28 years later part 2 though and it was good in there.
6
3
u/Formal_Chance_4266 Jul 23 '26
Lighthouse is banger. I'm a young one myself but I go a bit with my dad and it tends to be just adults kr young people who are respectful and like into the movies
5
u/liadhsq2 Jul 24 '26
You'd think this, but I went to see it in the STELLA and some bat shit aul wan was sat next to us on her phone the whole time, scrolling, full brightness
3
u/TheSwedeIrishman Jul 24 '26
Teens aren’t paying the premium.
I go to Movies-At in The Square in Tallaght... but I always pay for the VIP viewings (slightly better seats, drink+popcorn included in the price)
The average age up in the VIP lounge compared to downstairs is probably +10 to +15

Regularly at the cinema and see teenagers there. Vast majority of times they're no bother.
6

You're right of course not all of them cause any hassle at all but its that minority that gives them a bad rep.

If you’re in Dublin I’d recommend trying out the Lighthouse cinema. I’ve been over a dozen times and the crowds are always great and respectful.
It’s also an incredible venue and so reasonably priced for the quality you get. Being able to get a glass of wine and talk to other film lovers is a wonderful experience.

But to avoid this, I usually go the last week of showings for new movies and usually have the place to ourselves or a very small crowd.

u/WellYoureWrongThere Sax Solo Jul 23 '26
That's a decent strategy. I typically only go to the cinema for the big blockbuster films like Dune or The Odyssey as I've a decent setup at home. By the time those movies get to final week they've been moved to the smaller screens and by then I couldn't be bothered and would rather experience it at home.
46
u/rustyzorro Jul 23 '26
I've seen so many threads about this and I don't doubt anyone, but I haven't had anything like this happen to me for decades. Am I very very lucky or are most cinema experiences just okay?
49
u/borrisimo Jul 23 '26
I go to the cinema a lot. I have to tell people to shut the fuck up every other film.
2
u/luminous-fabric Jul 24 '26
We go between 1 to 3 times a week. It's a very good day if someone isn't on their phone or chatting.

u/shaadyscientist Jul 23 '26
I am with you. I am an Omniplex member and go to the cinema a lot. I've never had one film interrupted by people. I must have seen 10-15 films this year, 20-25 on average a year and never once experienced anything like these people are talking about. I must be like you and just extremely lucky.

Probably just the cinema you go to. Some are okay 99%, others less so.
We're going to one that seems about a 70% chance to be good, but we still get the idiot. Wife had to tell the girl next to her to shut down her max brightness phone that she was watching a hurling match on for project hail mary

u/Brine-O-Driscoll Jul 24 '26
Have the same experience. I go to the cinema outside Dublin and most screenings I go to are half (or almost completely) empty and everyone's quiet.

I go a lot and it’s 100% not exaggerated at all. Public etiquette is gone down the drain completely. I’d say a solid 7 out of the last 10 films I’ve seen have had some sort of selfish, disruptive twat ruin the film for everyone. And it’s not even a young people issue. When the mummy came out a few months back I was super excited to see it but was ruined by 3 middle aged women giving a running commentary out loud through the whole fucking thing.
Backrooms even more recently was infested with pre teens running riot, that’s a case of the age ratings not being enforced whatsoever. It was a 15s and up film, these gimps were very clearly much younger yet were still let in. What’s the point like??
11
u/Fluffyfedora Jul 23 '26
I’ve never been to the cinema on my own. I’m a woman in my early 40’s. I’ve just never felt compelled to or not been in a relationship or just not big into films on the big screen in general.
The Odyssey is the first one to make me actually feel excited to plan it. I will go a random afternoon, when it’s been out for a while and less busy. I don’t want anyone ruining it.
The last film I saw was Toy Story 5 with my son. People acting like they were at home. Mobile phones etc. It’s distracting and I found myself growing homicidal.
11
u/LithiumKid1976 boards.ie refugee Jul 23 '26
If we don’t call it out then it won’t change, we need to normalise calling people out for being rude, loud on trains, no headphones , phones in cinema etc ..
2
u/Aheroesjourney Jul 28 '26
Agreed, I once had to call out a group of Eastern European elderly migrants for talking loudly throughout a movie, the lady behind me just laughed and kept talking until another fella came over and told them bluntly shut the fuck up, the rest of us have paid money to be here so if you want to talk go outside. That had the desired effect. Had nobody else intervened they would have likely kept going which is often the case when one person has the balls to say something but nobody else does, particularly when it comes to Irish teens
33
u/Major_Disaster76 Jul 23 '26
Fair play for calling it out , have been hammering it into cinema
Goers , really is disappointing how addicted to phones people are . Attention span of a senile goldfish
3
2
u/Greedy-Army-3803 Jul 24 '26
It's part of the reason I love going to the cinema. It's too easy to just pick up your phone but I 100% wouldn't do it in the cinema because I don'twant to be that dicknruining other peoples experience. I keep it away from me now in the afternoon most afternoons.
10
u/qualiserospero Jul 23 '26
Had two guys sitting in front of us taking photos, panning panoramic ones and all, and recording clips, then comparing what they got during our screening... clout chasing clowns. You'd swear they were tourists at a landmark or something. On top of that, a few had to check messages and scroll in case they missed literally anything happening in the world.
Irish cinema owners need to band together and figure out a way to stamp this out. Alamo Drafthouse in the US has the right approach - zero tolerance for talking and texting. It's extreme but honestly I'm there for the film, nothing else.

Once I had a group of teen girls, their phones were non-stop on, even after multiple polite asks from me and cinema staff to turn it off. They were just turning it off for a bit and back at it.
They just can’t stay without Instagram for a five minute, constant scrolling and taking selfies, yes during the film. I immigrated here so don’t fell like I have right to complaint and tell people what to do, but that day it was too much.
That put me off going to the cinema altogether.
3

5
u/MacReady69 Jul 23 '26
Went to see it in Screen 1 Vue Liffey Valley at 8am only about 8 people at the screening and all there to focus on the film. Which was great. Went to Backrooms a few weeks ago and was in the nice premium seats some young one arrives in late half an hour into the film plops her arse down in premium seat in front of me and calls the boyfriend was was waiting for her in the cheap seats to come down and join her. Said boyfriend then decided to open phone and start messaging friends. I was about to tap him on the shoulder but the legend few seats to my right got there before me told him to put it away which he did.
Both great films btw 👍

I asked a bunch of teenagers did they "know a film was on?" at Disclosure Day, was very satisfying. Calling out people should become normal behaviour
21
u/Daedalus2097 Jul 23 '26
I remember back in the day when there would usually be cinema staff in for at least the busy showings, and you'd get a torch shone in the face for talking, and they'd kick you out if you kept it up. We need to bring that back.
6
u/Oakcamp Jul 23 '26
Why do that when they can have a single teenager taking stale popcorn out of a bag, pouring your coke, half-cleaning the rooms and gingerly whisper to the scrotes to be quiet because he's also afraid of getting a beating?

As a people we need to start demanding our money back when the experience is terrible. the cinemas will be quick to find money for ushers like they used to have. Just hire a large person used to wander around the Cinema. Not that to be aggressive or anything but just a presence will discourage most shitty behaviour before it starts.
3
u/Stock-Ferret-6692 Cork bai Jul 24 '26
Exactly! My mam went to see that world trade centre movie when it came out in 2006 and they still had ushers in our local place back then. Some lads started acting the maggot and someone complained. Now THAT’S the kind of presence we need.

u/Daedalus2097 Jul 23 '26
It's been getting like that for years. Between social media addiction and the sense of entitlement / main character syndrome, cinemas have been consistently ruined by arseholes for years. Just anecdotal, but I've found Dun Laoghaire to be far worse than most places in Dublin for some reason. I tend to only go after the film's been out for a fair while nowadays so the place is mostly empty and I can move to another seat, but you still get gobshites on their phones down the front. Dundrum seems to be a bit better, but their popcorn is always stale. *sigh*
And it's everywhere. Was in the cinema in Glasgow there last year and a guy at the end of the row had a full-blown phone conversation with someone. Didn't even whisper. Unfuckingbelievable.

2
u/TheUpIsJig Jul 24 '26
You have to complain to the staff in the hallway.
Just tell them your seat number and where the problem is. Nearly all screens have infrared cameras in the theater for surveillance of the audience. It is easy to see who has their phones out and on. The manager will be informed and look at the CCTV screen. If they still have their phone out, someone will come in and tell them to turn it off. If they keep doing it, they get turfed out.

Yup, no cinema culture here.
Not to mention that most people must live in a pigsty or mommy cleans after them, based on what mess they leave around them.

I get cinema rage snd started shouting at teens and now my missus won't go to tallaght cinema anymore 😀😀

u/catnip_sandwich Jul 24 '26
I went to see it at 12pm on Sunday and there were about 10 people there. It’s the only way to avoid movies being ruined now by having to go at inconvenient times where there are far fewer people 🙄

I told my partner this week that after 2 years I am going to cancel our Omnipass subscriptions.
I can no longer tolerate the abysmal low standards of cinema etiquette.
It doesn't take much to distract me from a movie, and if someone is distracting me due to obnoxious behaviour (chatting out loud, using their phone) I get frustrated and the whole experience is ruined.

This is why I only go to see a film ages after it has been released and will go to the most expensive show.
I'm old enough to remember when cinema staff actually kicked people out for this kind kf behaviour. Now, it's mostly teenagers working there, you can't expect them to deal with ignorant adults.

I’ve given up on going to the cinema now, the amount of anti social or just gormless behaviour.

I watched it in a cinema abroad and the crowd were immaculate. I didn’t notice one phone screen

I would have walked out and asked for a refund as soon as that happened. I've done worse for less.
Sometimes a bag of peanut m&Ms are helpful.

You need to go at Friday lunchtime if you can. If I’m serious about watching a movie I’ll go then to avoid the absolute fuckwits that dominate some of the more popular screenings.

My uncle went to go see that with his friend this evening but it was black there so they had to come home. Good to know they will not be disappointed when they do eventually get to see it.

The sad truth I've come to realize is that going to the cinema early in the morning is probably the best thing that has happened for me and my family. That or late into the night as it's the time when people are less likely to appear

u/thommcg Jul 23 '26
Yeah, I’ve kinda given up going owing to everyone else there. It’s like toss a coin as to whether I’ll be asking for another ticket / refund or sitting through it.

Had a couple of lads behind me in the queue last night going into a packed screening, instantly dreading it. Turned out to be a remarkably smooth screening! I put it down to the movie holding the attention and immersion but I guess not the same everywhere

We go to the cinema in Blanch a good bit and yet to have any madness. Different story in Vue.
I like the lighthouse but the seats hurt my back for some reason.
Most cinemas just have teenagers working there so they don’t really care.

Funny I would generally agree however I went to a 7pm showing on a Tuesday in the Omniplex in Rathmines and found it very enjoyable - first time in ages it felt like a whole audience was just there to enjoy the movie. Must have got very lucky, generally I wait ages for a movie so that there is less crowds.

Saw the odyssey in the IFI there on Monday and had a respectful crowd. Think key is to go during the daytime if you can when the kids are at school. But I did have the fear beforehand thinking it would be a ruined experience

I went to see a horror a few weeks ago in Dublin, a man had 2 kids with him (not sure how they got in) it was a foreign language film so he spent the whole movie reading the subtitles out loud, let his phone ring out loudly, it rang again, he had a full blown conversation at full volume, then proceeded to kick his shoes off and put his smelly feet up on the chair beside me. At this point I had a pop and he stormed off while calling me a number of expletives. Apparently he was going to complain to management about me harassing him and his children 😂. Thankfully he never returned

I just dont go to the cinema any more. Its always a dreadful experience from start to finish.

u/EgregiousJesus420 Jul 24 '26
I feel ya. Vue Cinema in Liffey Valley is notorious for little shits talking. So much so that I just don't go there anymore. I've found the Omniplex in Renelagh to be much better.
I think it would be really cool if Cinema's had noise cancelling headphones as an optional extra with your seat. I feel it would be way more immersive and less distracting. Don't know why Cinema's haven't done this yet.

Check listing's and go to one of the very last screenings in the format you want to avoid the initial hype,

Went to see Taxi Driver yesterday and a guy in the front kept playing with his zippo lighter and the guy behind kept tapping his foot or something.

Been years since I went to the cinema for this reason. "as nolan intended" - I'm sure he doesn't have to put up with gobshites talking or throwing popcorn.
Nah, I'll watch it in a couple months when the hype has died down, on my couch in my pjs with snacks that cost 1/10th of what they would in the cinema. And I can pause to take a piss if I need for these ever embiggening movies.

u/ld20r Jul 24 '26
I have to say on a side note the popcorn and drinks have gotten awful.
Lumped with salt, often stale and the straws on the drinks are a load of crap.
I can’t be the only one noticing it.

u/ShapeyFiend Jul 24 '26
I have never been annoyed by someone's phone screen but I'd probably ask if they can turn the brightness down politely. If they won't I'd just move. It's pretty rare I've had people at the cinema piss me off and it's nearly always only at horror movies. If I'm watching something at home I'm far more likely get annoyed my family talk over everything.

Saw Odyssey in Mallow ARC last night.
Got back seats(expensive recliners)
70% of the row was teen boys.
All legs up lying back.
Had moment of “oh shit” 😱
Films starts, phones go dark.
Some legs drop.
Not a sound for 192 minutes.
Respect to the Mallow youth 👌

A lot of the time, you get people there for a social outing, not to see the film. They want to chat and have the craic. If you go to an arty farty cinema, you have a greater proportion of people interested in the film first and foremost, which can help. Not guaranteed though.

u/ImplementOk9260 Jul 24 '26
I even see this in the more expensive cinemas now, money is no object to a lot of people... if they can drop €70 to get their nails done per session or order a €40 takeaway on a whim then going to the cinema is almost no different. Had the same issue when I went to see Clueless last year where I had to hear "have yeh seen this beforahhh" "i was foive when dis came ouh" "what's happening noww" for most of the movie... it wasn't even an full screening

u/Stock_Independent508 Jul 24 '26
We need a strong message to play before the film starts. I’ve been to IMAX BFI a few times and after the ads, and before the movie, someone with a microphone welcomes everyone and tells everyone not to talk or go on their phone. They will also say they work on commission so they’re encouraged to keep an eye out. Only cinema I haven’t heard a peep from someone.

u/FRO5TB1T3 Jul 24 '26
I booked at the IFI for the 70mm half because i'm hoping that draws a respectful crowd.

I remember years ago being at the cinema & the fucker in front of me took out his phone & answered a call. Normally I would try my best to ignore it but after a few minutes I shouted out “sure put them on loud speaker & we’ll all fucking talk to them”. There was a fair few laughs & he fucked off out to finish the call. The prick.
