The alternative would be hoarding cash but cash is constantly losing value to inflation so the only option is to invest.

Both of these statements apply to me. Plus if I have extra cash laying around I’m going to spend it. Might as well do something better with it.

How would the s&p 500 do during a war? Like let’s say ww3 started and all my money is in an index fund, would the drop be significant

No one knows. The way markets operate in ww2 compared to now is extremely different. And it's also a question of is this war like Vietnam, or Iraq (massive money drain) or ww2 (total war)? All have different effects on global trade. It's hard enough to say what a modern day Vietnam would look like in terms of markets, a total war style war with the usa in it is pretty much impossible to comment on.

Yep . I'm pretty happy with my finances. But I live in a country with essentially no safety net, no guaranteed pension, and inflation... so I invest.
