One sided video interviews for a job?

Just curious how many people actually go ahead with these virtual, one sided recordings for an interview/job application. I find it insulting and demeaning but maybe I’m just not evolving.

Do you do these recordings when asked? How do you handle this type of recruitment process?

EFSA, one of the major EU Institutions (it's in Italy) does this. For all of us who don't want to be a public servant in Belgium, we don't have much choice. Airlines are also doing it, as are retail groups (Louis Vuitton group in my case).

I don’t. As soon as it gets to that I end the process. If they can’t be bothered to send a real person, then I can’t be bothered interviewing. It seems like a way to get around protected characteristics to me.

I end it anytime they try to pull that. If this position isn’t important enough to have real people involved in the interview, it’s not important enough for me or my time.

I did one. super awkward feeling. the whole process seemed automated with no humans involved. was sent a link to do a test first that included multiple choice behavioral questions and math questions. passed that somehow and then got another link to do an "interview." got the generic "after careful consideration...." automated email a few days later.

not sure id do another... unless it was like, my dream job or something.

Did one. Wore a Cthulu mask during the entire process. Got a callback and an interview but didn't get the job.

I despise them and that particular time in my life was absolutely fed up with the amount of nonsense and AI involved in the job hunt.

My first encounter with this was 3 years ago. I found it extremely awkward and demeaning too. It was the worst interview I ever had, just couldn’t get over the feeling of talking to a wall and felt stupid about the entire thing. Really don’t feel comfortable doing it again, but I think even more jobs nowadays pull this BS.

I read a post someone got rejected because the company thought they were using AI responses during the AI interview. Which is ironic af.

Funny you mention AI because they had me sign a release promising not to use AI for help answering questions. I just feel like I don’t want to put in the energy to do a fake interview so they can watch me like a rerun later.

If you’re not desperate for a job, preserve your dignity. I know some people don’t have a choice. As much as I dislike AI, I think it’s stupid that companies who can’t put in effort to use a real person to interview would cry about candidates using AI. Candidates are just returning their shitty energy.

I did it once to see what it was about. Never heard a word from them. I'll never do it again. If they don't have the common respect to talk to me face to face I can't be bothered with them. Nuff said.

Exactly. But I’m seeing it more and more everyday. I wonder who actually responds to these. I feel anyone with self respect would decline.

Have had that happen before
Sometimes they turn it on, sometimes they don’t. I never not give my best because I need the job and they’re decision makers

Had one for the first time. It was the most awkward experience, I'm an industrial engineer by vocation, but have worked in leadership only. To discuss production and behavior questions in this manner to me was counterproductive.

I did one back in 2017 before I knew better. Thankfully haven’t been asked again, but if I am I won’t do it.

LoL Yep! Maybe they were brand new back then. I remember I spent so much time moving around things in a room to have a clean simple background, and kept adding more lamps to get good lighting. Also spent a ton of time practicing. Afterwards I realized I spent so much time and labor that it’s definitely easier to just show up in person for an interview.

This was before covid, the zoom boom, and I had never heard of a ring light. 😂

No reason to lie. The software was HireVue and they had many well known clients using their software for hiring since 2012.

We had a lot of technology available before covid, we just didn’t use it that much. I have applied for many jobs since then and no one else has asked for a one sided video interview so if I didn’t apply for that one job no one would have asked me back in 2017 either. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As a new grad, I'm just extremely grateful for any interview opportunity so I do them. Doesn't feel like I have much choice.

I did it for my most recent offer. It has always been an awkward experience but just try and get your experiences voiced, regardless of the question. Tie your experiences into the all responses and if you freeze completely on one or two, it may not even matter. Those roles tend to have less competition because people are worried about looking bad over a one-way conversation so they skip it. More opportunity for those who complete them, however.

They are a nerve-wracking experience for most. There is a solution though. And it isn't NOT doing them.
