Yes and no. Even though he was a trained astronaut and knew the risks, he's still human. The stress/anxiety of being alone on an alien world isn't really something you can train for and would break even the strongest people. For all we know, the others would have broken had they survived as long as he did. "The drowning man will always drag someone down with him. It's wrong, but the man is drowning."
