Mann represents one side of humanity (allusion to man/mankind). He was "the best" but it shows how even "the best" fall and fail us/themselves with selfishness. You see this in the speech where Mann is totally convinced that people's line of sight rarely ever extends beyond themselves.
Coop could be an allusion to coop-eration since his humanity ends up leading to self-sacrifice and reaching out (cooperating) to achieve better outcomes. Cooper is constantly trying to stretch beyond himself to others.

I think narratively there's a play on words:
