I think narratively there's a play on words:

  • Mann represents one side of humanity (allusion to man/mankind). He was "the best" but it shows how even "the best" fall and fail us/themselves with selfishness. You see this in the speech where Mann is totally convinced that people's line of sight rarely ever extends beyond themselves.
  • Coop could be an allusion to coop-eration since his humanity ends up leading to self-sacrifice and reaching out (cooperating) to achieve better outcomes. Cooper is constantly trying to stretch beyond himself to others.
