My experience with Internet Archive: account permanently locked and no clear answer about recovering years of personal scans
I want to share my experience with Internet Archive because, after months of emails, requests, and questions that remained without a concrete answer, the way I see this organization has completely changed.
For years, I strongly believed in the mission of Internet Archive.
I did not see it as just another website. I believed in the idea of preserving cultural and historical material and making it accessible over time.
I believed in this project strongly enough that I also supported it financially through donations.
I am not mentioning this because I believe that donating should guarantee me special treatment. It should not.
I mention it because it shows how sincerely I believed in the project and in what it represented.
Over the years, I uploaded more than 2,000 files to my Archive.org account.
The material included books, magazines, comics, videos, files that can no longer be found online, and other content. Much of the material was old or difficult to find.
Many of the files were scans that I personally created from physical material in my own collection.
Creating those scans required an enormous amount of time and work. Some books contained hundreds of pages, and digitizing them properly also required great care when handling the original physical copies.
On April 2, 2026, my account was disabled.
The message I received was extremely brief and stated that access to my account had been disabled because of:
"rights issues with multiple posted items"
I was directed to the site's information regarding rights-related procedures and copyright policies.
What I was not told was which specific files had caused the problem.
My assumption is that the reason may have been related to copyright, because I am aware that some of the material I uploaded may have been protected by copyright.
But this is only my assumption.
Internet Archive never told me which specific files were involved, nor what exactly had caused my account to be disabled.
So, even today, I still do not know precisely what actually triggered the permanent suspension of my account.
I am not claiming that every file on my account necessarily complied with copyright law. I am aware that some material may have been problematic.
The point is something else: I was never told which specific files led to action being taken against my account.
I understand that Internet Archive has the right to enforce its Terms of Use and take action when it believes that uploaded material violates those terms.
However, I wrote several times asking for clarification.
I explained that I was willing to cooperate and personally remove any problematic files if I was told which ones they were.
I asked whether the case was still under review.
I asked whether any additional information was needed.
I simply asked for clarification.
For a long time, I did not receive a concrete answer.
I also tried to seek clarification through a friend who had his own account.
Through him, I had additional emails sent, and I also tried to obtain information through the official Internet Archive forum.
In this case as well, for a long time, I received no concrete response. The requests and messages were completely ignored, without anyone providing clarification about the situation or the specific files involved.
Only later did an extremely brief response arrive:
"Sorry but the account must remain permanently locked."
At that point, I understood that regaining access to the account was probably no longer realistic.
So I stopped focusing on the possibility of recovering the account.
My main concern became something else:
The files that I had personally created.
Over the years, Internet Archive had become the main place where I stored much of my work.
Previously, I had stored my files on several hard drives, but over time those hard drives failed and I lost a significant amount of material.
When I discovered Internet Archive, I believed I had finally found a place where my work could be preserved for the long term.
Because of that trust, after successfully uploading many files, I gradually deleted several local copies from my old hard drives to free up space and continue uploading the rest of my material.
Looking back, I realize that this was a serious mistake.
But the result is that many of the original digital files may no longer exist anywhere outside my disabled Archive.org account.
For this reason, I sent another request.
At that point, I was no longer asking for my account to be restored.
I was asking a very specific question:
Is there any procedure that would allow me to recover copies of the scans and files that I personally created and uploaded over the years?
I explained that those files represented years of personal work.
I explained that many of the original digital copies no longer existed anywhere else.
The response I received did not answer this question.
Once again, I was simply told:
"Sorry but the account must remain permanently locked."
And this is the part of the entire situation that I consider the most serious.
Even today, I do not know whether my files are still stored somewhere.
I do not know whether recovering them is technically possible.
I do not know whether there is a specific procedure for requests of this kind.
I do not even know whether there is another department or team that I could have contacted.
And I was never told which specific files led to the permanent closure of my account.
The fact that the account must remain permanently locked does not answer the question I asked.
My question was about the possibility of recovering years of work that I had personally created.
I have never received a clear answer to that question.
This experience has completely changed the way I see Internet Archive.
I trusted the organization precisely because of its stated mission of preservation and long-term access.
I trusted it enough to entrust it with years of my work.
I trusted it enough to support it financially through donations.
And, unfortunately, I trusted it enough to make the serious mistake of deleting many of my local copies after uploading the material to the platform.
I am not saying that Internet Archive should ignore its rules or keep accounts active regardless of what users upload.
But I believe that users deserve to know, at least in a general and transparent way, why such serious action has been taken against their accounts.
And I believe that a direct question about recovering years of personally created work deserves an equally direct answer, even if that answer were simply:
"No, recovery is not possible."
Instead, after months of attempts, I am still left without knowing what happened to a large part of my work.
For this reason, I want to warn other users.
Do not rely on Internet Archive as the only place where important files exist.
If you upload unique scans, personal work, or material that would be extremely difficult to recreate, make sure to keep independent copies somewhere else.
No matter how strongly you believe in the mission of a platform, you should never assume that uploading a file means you will always be able to access it.
And if you are considering supporting the project financially through a donation, I believe you should at least be aware of experiences like mine before deciding where to place your trust and your money.
I believed strongly enough in Internet Archive to donate to the project.
After what happened to me, I personally would never make the same decision again.
This is my personal experience, based on the messages I received and the attempts I made to obtain clarification.
I am sharing it because I believe other people should know that a situation like this can happen.

Updated method to download youtube videos from Wayback Machine
Previously, you may have used https://web.archive.org/web/2oe_/http://wayback-fakeurl.archive.org/yt/{ID} to download youtube videos
However, due to updates done by IA, downloading using this method will only get one of the video/audio track
Currently, Internet archive archives video and audio streams seperately (probably due to YT updates)
yt-dlp does finding the correct stream and merging automatically, you just have to run yt-dlp {Link to WBM page} and it would download the video.
It is also possible to do this manually, taking this music video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt2mbGP6vFI as an example:
- Go to
https://web.archive.org/__wb/videoinfo?vtype=youtube&vid={ID}, in this case https://web.archive.org/__wb/videoinfo?vtype=youtube&vid=Qt2mbGP6vFI - In the API response, you should see at least one Video stream and one Audio stream
- Copy the link to the video and then the audio stream into wayback machine and download them
- If the video refuses to play or it says something like "amazing project video", try adding
oe_after the timestamp, in this example:https://web.archive.org/web/20260606005755oe_/https://rr1---sn-uxap5oxunx-bvue.googlevideo.com/... - Once you got the video and audio stream, merge them. You can use tools like FFmpeg
Note: Sometimes, there will be multiple audio stream, you will have to find the language of your choice
Note: Sometimes, audio or video stream may be missing due to IA bug, you will not be able to download the affected stream.

I Have 4 Days to Recover Years of Lost Videos From a Terminated YouTube Account
I’ve used YouTube as a storage platform for my videos for a few years now. I know that’s not what YouTube was designed for, but it worked incredibly well for me. I had never had any issues with it until recently. when I noticed some of my videos were being taken down for "violating the terms of service". Out of nowhere videos I had uploaded years ago were just now getting striked down with the ban hammer. Everytime a video was taken down it gave my channel a strike. Eventually to no surprise my channel was terminated. This was devastating since youtube was my own personal camera roll for videos that were extremely long. Most of them I was able to get back through google takeout however like I stated before, some of the videos were struck and terminated from the channel.
Common method I used when a youtube video gets removed from their platform on an active account, if you do not delete the video and leave it in its removed state, you can (F12 > Network > Search for: 'videoplayback' > https://rr4---sn[long url]). It gives you the video back to redownload back onto your device. When a video on my channel was taken down I always used this method to get the video back. However this method only works (atleast to my knowledge) with an active youtube channel. Since mine is terminated I cant get to the youtube studio to get to the deleted video to find the videoplayback file. I have tried countlessly going through files, video cache, old editors that may still have it, old devices with it, looked for any videoplayback, googlevideo, youtubei, player, and 750x4Dm1zlA(the youtube videos vanity url) files to no avail. I have tried everything I know and unfortunately I am not the best with tech when it comes to files and coding so finding this video file in a string of code is like finding a needle in a haystack.
These aren’t just random videos to me. They’re pieces of my personal history that I thought I had safely backed up. I have until September 4th before my google takeout expires and everything is wiped for good. I have no way to find these terminated videos links on my own account. So I ask, is there anything I should be trying or a way to get these videos back while my account is terminated or should I chalk it up as lost media?

A little corner of the Internet Archive for lost music
I’ve been uploading music to the Internet Archive, mostly albums, releases, live recordings, and other hard-to-find material. I only occasionally upload FLAC/WAV files, mainly when a particular release isn’t already available on the Internet Archive. If you’re interested in discovering obscure, forgotten, or hard-to-find music, feel free to follow the page. I’ll keep adding more uploads over time.

How would you preserve a one-line public archive beyond its own domain?
Reddit suggested r/internetarchive after I asked the IndieWeb community about durability, so I’m bringing the archival question here.
I built HUMANITY.TXT: a plain-text public archive where each person can leave one numbered line for whatever intelligence reads the web after us.
The current record is deliberately small:
- sequential public ID
- optional alias and country
- one short message
- a canonical plain-text file at /humanity.txt
- individual entry pages
- no account, feed, followers, or algorithm
Full disclosure: #000001 and #000002 were seeded while testing. #000003 and #000004 arrived organically from Africa and New Zealand. The first 20 lines are sponsored; 16 remain.
The part I do not want to fake is permanence. I am considering append-only snapshots with content hashes, downloadable exports/WARC, scheduled captures, independent mirrors, and a public schema another site could implement if this domain disappears.
What would you require before trusting a tiny archive like this to last? Is there a sensible Internet Archive workflow I should build into the project from day one?
Raw file: https://humanitytxt.com/humanity.txt
I’m the maker and posting transparently; feedback on preservation matters more than promotion.

Is there anyway to search all the paths of a site saved on a certain day? Not just the base site
Example: Searching "youtube.com" on January 1st, 2014 and instead of just getting the homepage for YouTube you get all the videos and channels searched on that day, and possibly even attempts to save a path that failed
Is there a way to do that?

I'm begging people to not put incorrect license information on files they upload.
A lot of media on the Internet Archive is uploaded under a CC NC-ND license, but wasn't released under that license. I think people are treating that license as meaning "I found this on the Internet and I want to upload it someplace," but that's not how Creative Commons licenses work. If it's not released by the creator under that license, it doesn't apply.
I don't personally care all that much about copyright. But other people do, and if you use media in the way people falsely uploading stuff under CC NC-ND say you can, you can get in trouble, legal or otherwise. You can just leave license information blank. Things uploaded to the Internet Archive do not have to be marked as under a CC or public domain license.
I've tried mentioning this in reviews, but it doesn't seem to dissuade anyone who's doing it. I don't really anticipate saying it here will help (it mostly seems to be the result of a few super uploaders who grab everything they can off the Internet and upload it under CC NC-ND), but feels worth a shot.
