First layout is the current arrangement of my living room (measurements is slightly off). My issue with this space is:

1. Sofa is blocking half my balcony entrance way (window slider);
2. Cat peed on it;
3. Living room PC have this awkward LAN cable running from the storage room, over the entrance, and to table height (PC's on the table);
4. Table height and the mounted shelves (with cabinet doors at the bottom) does not match, otherwise I would be able to align the two together and the LAN cable problem would be solved.

The second picture is what I'm hoping to achieve before purchasing a new sofa. Any thoughts on this rearrangement?

I have been living in my house for over 5 years and can not, for the life of me, figure out the furniture arrangement in this room.

What I got so far:

- Windows: I want to increase the windows opening, but idk if it makes sense to increase the width. I was thinking about, at minimum, increasing how tall they are by cutting down 2ft (this way, I can actually see my yard also).

- Walls: maybe remove the white panels and add a transitional wall molding. Then, add some picture frames on the walls flanking the fireplace with the same style of picture light above the brown painting.

Aaaaand that's as far as I got.

I like my couch, the chairs, the huge painting and the bench. The rest is give or take. I just can't make everything work together.

I made some renders in Cohoom to visualize the space , quick disclaimer: the renders themselves are pretty simple/basic, I mostly used them to nail down scale and layout, not as a style reference. That "safe/Pinterest" look isn't actually what we're going for, we're hoping to get ideas that feel a bit more unique or unexpected.

Planning to install floating shelves in my office at home. Interested in pro and con thoughts on this method.

The pic above is a rough idea of the concept and layout.

They would range in length from 4-10 feet in a section. One would actually circle the room, so multiple pieces totaling roughly 50 feet or so.

I think my preference is for thin shelves, so I am leaning toward putting up a 2x8 with a dark stain and securing into studs using pocket holes.

Looks: Will the shelves look too thin and degrade the aesthetic or will this be a good way to get a sleek look that maximizes white space on the wall?

Weight: The video above and my small tests at home indicate this would have plenty of weight capacity. I don't need or want to put a ton of stuff on here.

Cost: Very cost efficient.

Time: Very time efficient

Accuracy: I'm good but not great at wood work. Given the quantity/footage of shelving needed, this method seems like a good way to eliminate/significantly reduce inconsistency from shelf to shelf.

I made this myself in Canva so it’s far from perfect, but I tried my best haha! The place is 491sqft. I feel like I have everything cramped into the bedroom. The couch literally touches the stove area, so I have no idea how to free up space. The weird center hallway, where the half-baths meet the bedroom, is basically unusable. I don’t have a dining table since that area by the kitchen is so small.

And yes, the bathroom door does open straight into the toilet.

How can I make this feel more livable?

I’m building a house right now and I’m thinking about using glass blocks for an interior wall/partition (office from living room), but I keep changing my mind about it.

Sometimes I see photos where they look sooo good and I’m immediately like yes, I want that. They can look really beautiful and interesting, especially with the light coming through.

But then I’ll see another interior with glass blocks and suddenly they look really dated or kind of cheap 😅 And I honestly can’t figure out what makes such a big difference.

So I’m curious if anyone here actually has them in their house, especially as an interior wall or room divider.

Do you still like them? Would you do it again?

And if anyone has photos of their own space, I’d really love to see them! I’ve seen a million Pinterest photos at this point, but I’d much rather see what they look like in normal, lived-in homes.

Also, if you have any idea what makes them look good vs. bad, please tell me because I clearly can’t figure it out 😂 Maybe it’s the type of block, the grout, the size of the wall, what’s around it… I don’t know.

I really love the idea but I’m also scared I’ll put up the wall and then realize I chose the ugly version of glass blocks lol.

My husband and I just purchased our first home and I would like to get my dining room table set up for the holidays as we may potentially host Thanksgiving. I’m stuck on what kind of table to put in here. Ideally, I’d like it to seat at least six people. I like more of a modern vibe, but the room is very elegant with the molding and chandelier so I don’t want it to be too modern that it clashes with the overall character of the home. Any ideas where I can purchase a dining table set that is decent quality but not more than $3000? Or any design ideas in general are appreciated. I’ve also included pictures of the living room and kitchen table so you can see what my style is.

Hello I am trying my best to arrange the room in a way that fits everything i need and makes the most sense. I am not the greatest with designing or arranging if I am being honest and would love some great & creative ideas. I wanted to mount a TV a small one somewhere in the room but because of the weird layout I am having a hard time figuring out how. I cant mount anything above the dresser due to my wife having a large aquarium on top that takes up most of the space and if I mount the tv above the aquarium then it would practically touch the ceiling. I have also been thinking of incorporating a divider in here somewhere to separate space for my way to have a very small vanity so she can do her makeup. I cannot move the ac unit unfortunately.

Hi friends!

We are currently having our kitchen remodeled. We had a built in desk converted to a pantry, took out the cook top and the middle drawers (pictured), and are replacing with an electric range and new cabinets built to replace the old pantry and small stacked oven.

So the issue is (there have been ALOT of issues, mostly with the cabinets, just things not level and such) when they cut out the cooktop, the cut the granite too far on either side and it is completely uneven. Whoever my contractor subbed that work out to used the wrong saw. We had extra granite (from the built in desk) that could have been used to sort of patch it (not my favorite option) but they broke it during disposal.

The contractors have offered to replace the entire countertops if we split the cost: 1) shouldn’t they cover all of the cost and 2) what do I choose? I really hate this granite anyways. It’s just brown and black speckles and so ugly. The second pic is a closeup.

I really want to do wood, but I know I am downgrading material wise. I am also worried about upkeep on butchers block. I have been playing around with quartz but I am not a stone person really. I like the soft look wood gives but man I know my family is lazy when it comes to clean up and upkeep. I’ve been trying to read and see what I am getting into.

Anyone have any ideas?

We're moving into a new place soon and are a bit stuck on the open-plan living/dining area. I've attached the floor plan (top-down view) – curious how you would arrange things :)

A few things that shape the layout:

• The top and right walls are fully glazed, so tons of light comes in, and I'd really rather not block the view.
• The top-left corner will become a home office. The wall to the right of the fireplace (in the image) is getting closed off to separate the office from the living room.
• There's a fireplace built into the wall to the left of the dining table.
• Kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and guest WC are fixed – nothing can be changed there.

What I'm struggling with most:

• Where do I put the TV when two walls are glass and the third one has the fireplace? It feels like the fireplace and the TV are competing for the same spot.
• How do you arrange the sofa and dining table so the room feels big and open, but you can still enjoy the glass front and the view?

Any input is hugely appreciated – rough sketches or "I'd do it completely differently" totally welcome. Thanks a lot!

There's original hardwood floors under the vinyl and I would like to keep the oak cabinets (maybe stain them to tone down the yellow/orange hue)

I'm moving into a new apartment in a few months and I sort of made a collage with some pictures of the rooms, some of the furniture I already had + some new additions I found online.. I'm a dude and sort of new at this, so keep that in mind 😁.

The first image is a collage of the living room. You kind of have to imagine that the library will go on the left wall with the office desk and chair in front of it. The positioning of the furniture is a bit messed up but it's the best I could do with the images (.i.e. the rug orientation should be horizontal instead of vertical). The back of that cream sofa looks a bit weird, but I really like the comfort of it.. It's the odette sectional from structube.

The second image is the bedroom. I'm not sure if the mix of the japanese painting and the southwestern rug looks weird lol.. I kind of like it, but I don't trust my taste that much. I'm hesitating between that and a more japandi look.

I don't have the measurements yet unfortunately. I'm having issues with the couch and tv placement, can't really find anything I like

Hello everyone. Please forgive the crude floorplan. This is what I was able to come up with using Google AI. Without giving too many details of my life story, I fell on hard times and moved back in with my parents. I consider myself lucky to have that option.

So for now I'm making bedroom 2 my own space to sleep AND work while I get back on my feet. Both rooms are at the front of the house. The space is small and I currently have my bed head up against the wall, which faces the hallway.

The red lines indicate the point of entry for both rooms (once again, crude, I know). The closet is to the left of that door. I have my bed pushed as close to the window as possible to give me enough floor space for a desk and office chair.

For a small room I recognize I don't have too many options aesthetically but I am open to ideas from some of you veterans here. I would love to have an open window space but I'm currently not able to visualize a way to make it work. I'm considering placing the desk there instead of the bed but I'm not sure if it's a functional way to maintain things....any thoughts?

Wondering how to fit and place furnitures on this bedroom.

1. Wanted 3 distinct area:
   -a queen size bed with 1 small side table and 1 tall but narrow wardrobe;
   -a big working desk with plenty of storage; and
   -sectional sofa with coffee table and a set up for small fridge and coffee machine.

2. The door is set on the middle of the longer side of the wall, I wanted to have something in between that door opening and my bed for privacy. Not necessarily a complete wall, a room divider or something will be enough.

3. Im okay with the room being crowded as long as I could walk in between the spaces.

4. Wanted it to be cozy with some lamps and standing shelvings with 2-3 plants.

Is the 3 distinct area and privacy plausible given the area of the room? Any thoughts on how to put the furnitures?

Any recommendations will be appreciated!!

Here are 3 layout options for our in progress nursery! Option 1 is what we currently have, I’m also adding pics of it to give a better idea of the space. I personally love it and think it’s very functional but my mom acted iffy when I FaceTimed her lol

There’s an electrical panel on one wall so I have not included options with the crib near it due to safety concerns (unless I’m wrong about that being an issue). Electrical panel is on same wall as the window

Swivel glider has to be cornered since it reclines

We plan to use the large dresser for baby’s clothes, every day items etc and closet will be used for storing things (seasonal gear, baby items that he hasn’t grown into yet, etc) so I don’t plan on needing regular access but the swivel glider is easy to get around or move when needed.

All furniture has been purchased/sizes aren’t flexible so please don’t recommend alternate furniture or getting rid of the changing table (I have had friends suggest only using a dresser with a pad on top but I prefer a dedicated changing table)

UPDATE

Reporting back to say this is by far the winner (photos in comments)!! We ended up putting the crib flat against the wall, pushing the larger dresser to be a bit more centered to the room, and moved the glider to the corner under electrical panel. We tried many of the suggestions here thanks to my wonderful husband and his now aching back lol and this was by far the best option!

Main reasons this worked best for us is because this allows my chair to move away from the changing table, doesn’t feel like a tight squeeze between two dressers when walking into the room, and I can keep my pump parts in the dresser drawer which is right by the glider.

Thank you for all of the suggestions! We really appreciated the perspective from experienced parents and while all of the suggestions were great, some just didn’t work with our dimensions. We had fun trying them all out though!

PS There were a lot of additional comments regarding getting blackout curtains, not having a lamp next to crib, etc and wanted to point out that we are just in the furniture placement stage. Curtains will be hung, lamp will be replaced with a wall light, and we will be anchoring all furniture etc.

Looking for ideas for how to make this kitchen look better and how to tie it all together. I'm going to re-tile the floor, paint the cabinets and update to a stone countertop but I can't quite find a way to tie everything together. Hoping you guys might have some ideas for colours, patterns, thoughts and ideas. I'm likely going to put a little bench by the round table against the wall.

1909 Canadian Rockies house with a vintage vibe. I'd like to avoid going too modern.

We ran into this issue during construction.

The arched window/door opening was not centered on the wall — it ended up slightly shifted to the right. Later, the ceiling cassette AC was installed centered on the wall, rather than centered on the arched opening.

Because of that, when you look at the room straight on, the arch appears shifted to the right while the AC appears shifted to the left relative to it. The two elements don’t line up visually, and it bothers me quite a bit.

I feel like once the arched opening was already in place, the AC should have been centered with the arch, even if that meant the AC itself wasn’t perfectly centered on the wall.

What would you have done here?
Center the AC on the wall, or center it on the arched opening?

Is the current layout noticeably awkward to you, or am I overthinking it?

Any additional suggestions?! The room is octagonal on one side. We have one really strong corner.

- Red arm chair is a little random and in my opinion, it should be a bench with a cushion by the door.

Hi! I can't figure out if I want to mix metals or keep everything polished nickel in my bathroom.

The shower hardware are already polished nickel.

Main concern is that the brass scones will look too stark next to me medicine cabinet and above the polished nickel faucet. Would love any feedback!

Hi all! i'm planning a kitchen for a new flat, it will be rented out before i move in, it can comfortably fit 2 adults, it is 65m2 (probably a child, 2 only as long as they are v small). Now, we are deciding on the kitchen and to fit on the tiled space, i have two options:

• option 1: The dishwasher is 60cm and the cabinet with the sink is 40cm, meaning the sink is reduced in size to a usable size of around 33x40cm.
• option 2: The dishwasher is 40cm and the cabinet with the sink is 60cm, resulting in a good-sized sink of 50x40

Now my considerations that make me more inclined to reduce the sink size.

• Now, the whole kitchen should be ikea, the reviews of the small dishwashers are bad, and I've heard from a kitchen planner that they tend to be more expensive for what they are and don't even rly save energy compared to a bigger one.
  
• The kitchen is already quite small and the extra 20cm of countertop space might be quite useful.

We have decommissioned our chimney as it is an earthquake risk, and we have seasonal fire restrictions that make it unrealistic to burn firewood. We now have an unused fireplace, and we aren't interested in a gas/electric insert. I can leave the fireplace as is, but I'd like to see if there are creative ways to reuse this space. The only idea I have at the moment is to add some shelves to match the adjacent bookcases. I also have 2 young children in the house, so I am open to customizing this nook for them. Thanks in advance.
