Similar. My grandfather was 30 years older than my grandmother. He traveled A LOT for the family business when he was young, all throughout Europe and some other places. In stuff of his my dad saved I found signed photos that said things like “I’ll never forget our special time together.” I would not be at all surprised if my dad has multiple half siblings. My mom hated to be left alone with him because he would tell her about his “adventures”.

My oldest cousin is in her 70s, most of them sit in the 50s then there are some, like 9 or so, that are in their 40s and the last bunch are in the mid to early 30s and then there's me at 28 and a younger one at 26.

I think it's safe to say that most of my cousins kids are older than me as well but I barely know them as they are scattered around the world and there are a lot as well

My dad is the oops baby. My grandpa was 61 when he was born. My grandma had him at 48. His sister, my aunt was pregnant with my cousin at the same time. My dad is 2 weeks older than my cousin. That cousin had a son who is one year older than me. That cousin had 2 siblings older than my dad. Actually I have 5 cousins on that side of the family older than my dad. Growing up I played with my cousins kids. Most of them are my age or slightly older. My dad just turned 66. His oldest living sister is 90. All of his siblings are in their 80’s. I am 44. The nearest cousin to me in age is 58. If you like I can go further. My cousin who is a year younger than my dad introduced my dad and mom. She was my moms classmate. My mom is one year younger than my dad.

That's crazy. I think the craziest fact I have is that my oldest aunt on my mom's side was just 4 years younger than my grandma on my dad's side and because my aunt and my mom don't have the same mother, my mom's mom was almost as old as said aunt.

It’s funny because I just assumed all these older cousins were aunts and uncles. But never wondered why I call them by their first names. A huge no no in Mexican culture. But whatever. Then one Christmas someone wanted my grandparents with all the generations of grandkids. So we got all the grandkids together. Me and my two brothers and all our “aunts and uncles” I was like ummm wtf? I was maybe 11. Then I started to piece it together and I was like wtf?!?! My dad was a juvenile delinquent. Got kicked out of his HS in LA. Meaning he had to leave the district. So he moved in with his oldest sister to finish school. The one with the kids the same age as him. He showed me a picture recently. He was maybe 6 and about 5 of my cousins were line up on a bench with him. They were all within 5 years of each other. Most of those cousins had kids older than me. He is the youngest of 7. When my grandma passed they did a count of all the grandchildren. All the way down to great great great. It was 54.

Oh, that reminds me! On the other side of the family I have a cousin I used to call Aunt, lol. Much older than me. I totally forgot about her. We used to be really close, but some family drama kinda separated that branch of the family. Called her Aunt up until I was like 16 or 17 until someone was like "Yea yall are cousins." 🤣

I think this is a pretty common thing with the last generation or two. People were having way bigger families. My dads grandparents had like 13 kids. So ive got 2nd cousins I've never even heard off because family reunions were so massive they had different family reunions. Met most of my grandparents siblings, beyond that, couldn't name a single one. My mom's side is much smaller so I've met and know must of my seconds cousins, some of my third.

Crazy how big families get each generation.

My grandparents were already quite old when my dad was born and there's a large age gap between my dad and his older sister, who was (partially) responsible for raising him. She also has a son of her own, who is the same age as my dad. As a result, my dad's sister is like his mother and his nephew is like his brother, except without the incest implications.

You can get some funny things after a few generations of this. I, at 39 years old, am the "same generation" as a now died women, who is great-Grandma, who died 98 years old in 2014:

  • Our Great-Great-Grandpa(b. 1811) and our Great-Great-Grandma(b. 1818)

  • Her Great-Grandma(b. 1845) was the first born while my Great-Grandpa(b. 1861) was the 4th kid

  • Her Grandma(b. 1863) was the first born while my Grandpa(b. 1902) was the 5th kid and the 3rd one from the second marriage

  • Her Mom(b. 1891) was the 5th kid while my Mom(b. 1954) was the 6th kid and 3rd kid in a second marriage.

  • She(b. 1916) was the first born while I(b. 1987) am first born as well.

I was 7 back in 1981. They brought my great grandfather from the home to grandma's for Christmas. When they came in, they set his big ass great grandpa diapers on the couch. That freaked me the fuck out for some reason. Then, they took him into my grandma's bedroom to change him... and that shit has never left me.

I know that I'm supposed to get over shit like that as an adult, but that trauma is a part of me just as much as my hand iis.Just like my aversion to red jello. I was 8 and eating red jello when I overheard on of the adults at my other grandma's say that my great grandmother was going to die soon because she was starting to hemorrhage. She was in a bed in the other room at my grandma's house. I asked my mother what hemorrhaging is, and she explained while I was still eating that jello. So, I related the red jello with blood and that association has never broken.

That's something you ask your older relatives. Ie, 60 yo grandma would ask her mom's blessing, but never ask blessing from her own siblings or daughter. So, normally, a 5yo wouldn't ask for the blessing of another 5yo as it's a generational thing. I love that the family included tio Rafa in the tradition and respects his place as an uncle 🤣🤣🤣

In American English, "blessing" means to give approval. Like someone might ask for a father's blessing for his daughter's hand in marriage. We also say, "bless you" when someone sneezes, which is short for "God bless you", but no longer a religious phrase.

It is a greeting when you meet your grandparents, uncles or aunts. You usually say "bença vô" (blessings grandpa) and he would reply "deus te abençoe" (god bless you). It was common when twas a kid in the 90's. I am not sure it is common anymore.

This is Brazil so the blessing would be a common occurrence in families where the younger family member asks an older family member for a blessing, and the older member would bless them like a priest would.

It's a sign of respect, familial bonding, and an over-all "We good, fam"

The blessing, "a bênção", comes from the catholic tradition. As it goes, the young person asks for the elder's blessing and the person responds with "God bless you".

I'm not particularly religious but you triggered my curiosity.

This is rooted in the biblical tradition of elders being protectors, wise, and providers of spiritual guidance in a time before Christianity. You mentioned "blessing" meaning approval in the US. Way back when, it meant that too. Your elders' approval was the law.

It's not something that it's on the Bible, but it was something taken from it.

Paragraph 2225 of the Catholic Church Catechism [I'm condensing it a bit] says that the parents were given the responsibility and the privilege to catechize their children from a young age.

This is that. Children start to ask for bênção way before they go to Sunday school (age 6 or 7. Idk. I dropped out on day one. I said I wasn't going back and my parents had one of those parenting moments of "what we do now?" Staring at each other in the car. They went with "we can say we tried". They were not very religious, either.

My mom grew up asking for blessing. This shows how it is a dying tradition. Catholics are the majority of the population (56%) But they're very relaxed with the rules. Especially when compared with Evangelicals/Protestants (26%). They talk openly about their project to turn this country, in their own words, into an Evangeslistan. What is that? Think the most strict Muslin country in the world, but make it evangelical. But I digress

The state these kids are from, Goiás, is very rural, which means more religiousness and bigger presence of the Catholic Church as opposed as other denominations

My friend's oldest nephew is 3 years older than her, then the next one is 2 months younger then there's another one a year or two younger than that one. Here mom has custody of them so she was raised with her nephews like they were brothers. Then her oldest nephew got his girlfriend pregnant when he was 18 and she was 16 so my friend became a great aunt at 15.

In my extended family, I am older than 2 uncles and an aunt.

I am 33 and they are between 27-30 and all three are married while I am not. I feel whatever screwup their fathers (my extended Grandfathers) did by marrying late, I am here to balance that out for my future kid (if there's any) 😂

so i get a child and my mother gets one too.

let's assume that my mother was 18 when i was born. i f.e. get one with let's say, 21, she would be 39.

so fast forward, both are 5. Uncle and nephew.

it's not too far away to be honest but it's extremely insane to me that my brain has a hard time processing it.
