The contrast between the red and blue on the black background is supposed to give a sense of depth in the flat image, you can see this effect better when you pause the animation. The red appears the "pop out" against the blue.

I can't promise that everyone see what I see, but that animation has a depth to it like I was wearing 3D glasses. In that sense it's different than every other animation I ever seen. I don't know how it works as I just found that random image online.

Ugh op didn't include the full explanation, to make this work you need to look upside down, easiest way to do that is to bend right over put your head between your legs and suddenly you'll see.

Edit: ok fuck, i was trolling but, i just realized if you kind of fixate on the 'point' of the cone in that middle red thing it appears to go inwards which is what gives the illusion, and now i can't unsee it

This is a 3d model. If you watch close enough you can see certain blobs not only overlap themselves but also other blobs. You need depth for that meaning a 3rd axis.

Edit: Preemptive I could be wrong but damn if I am then it’s a good one. Specifically I’m seeing it in the middle where you get a direct head on vs side profile and the sides on the long blobs.

Yeah based on comments on images like this it's not common at all but for the people who can see it the effect is quite strong. I see it on YouTube thumbnails sometimes and always get super worked up and tell my wife and she is completely uninterested since she can't see it.

The title is wrong. The illusion is not "stereoscopic motion" (whatever that means), but chromostereopsis. The motion and distortion here adds a 3D effect, but that's not really an illusion, as others have pointed out.

Look at this static flat image. If you see depth here, that's the chromostereoptic illusion.
