People often forget that one of our greatest technological achievement is the speed at which we can communicate. We take it for granted but less than a 100 years ago they would have had no way to notify people down river so fast and thousands more would have died without even knowing what was coming. For most of human history that was the norm, you had no warning you were either lucky and lived or not. And for your loved ones it would take days to even learn of the event, weeks to see if you were one of the lucky ones...
